Games I Played / Beat This Year - 2021
Updated Throughout My 2021 - games I started or finished in a different year than 2021 will be indicated.
Thoughts on This Year:
This was the first year I made an account on Backloggd! I am writing this in hindsight, and I can say, three calendar years later, my experience has been mostly positive! I try not to let these types of websites turn a hobby I have into a social performance, and fortunately, I think I do genuinely care about video games, and try not to concern myself with "taste." That being said, I don't make the distinction between something that is "the best" and something that is "my favourite," so I happen to think I have pretty good taste.
This was a seminal year in my 'gaming career' , as prior to this year, I had only really played things I found "safe." Instead of sticking to what I knew, I played some older games, ones I had some difficulty with, and I branched into an entirely new series to me - Metroid! These games aren't the most out-there, even to me, but I think it was a stepping stone in realizing how many experiences are out there in the world of video games that I had to search for.
Wanting to Metroid Dread led me to dip my toes into the greater Metroid series with Super Metroid, a game I had kind of convinced myself was really difficult. I also convinced myself many games were too hard, like some older games on this list, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Persona 4 Golden, and games outside of a familiar genre, like Thumper and Persona 5 Strikers.
The years before this one, I think the only 2 games I had really branched out to try were Hollow Knight in 2019, and Persona 5 Royal in 2020, and I think this is the year where that momentum of trying new things started to build.
Overall, good year! Played a lot of good games, both new and old, both familiar and foreign!
