Bio
1/5th of the Modern Escapism podcast, a pop-culture show where we talk games, movies, TV, music and more. Out every Thursday.

I've been playing and enjoying games for over 30 years now, since I was 4 years old. My favourite type of game would probably be something that's narrative driven, but there's always something different that surprises me that I end up loving too.

I also love watching films, so follow me on letterboxd too.

Story was great, felt like a proper Spider-man story. Enough big stakes and the right amount of cheeseyness. I liked this interpretation of Venom and how it strayed away from the normal storyline too. Using Harry as the host to get more emotional impact and set up the next Spider-man game was a nice touch. I appreciate Insomniac doing their own thing. I also like the things they've set up for Spider-man 3 too with Carnage, Green Goblin and Silk. I like that they went with Silk rather than the easy option of Gwen.

Combat is really great fun and the mechanics have really been improved upon and the introduction of the winged suits was great. But there really needed to be something more with the boss fights as they all felt the same. Just spam them enough and you'll win. They don't challenge you enough. Oh and there's way too many QTEs in this. They began to bug me. Just thrown in there at random moments for no reason.

The side stuff was better than Spider-man 1, but there were definitely at least two I didn't really like which were the EMF stuff and the vulture robot chasing ones. However some of the FNSM missions were really touching and well written. There was some really nice downtime moments with those. But on the flip side some really boring downtime moments in the main missions. I know they're used to expand on lore but they're just overly long, interactive cutscenes used to pad out the game.

I'll give the game big +1 for making MJ have more urgency and making her parts much better to play this time. Less said about Haileys little spraypaint misson the better, but I get why they wanted to highlight Mile's love interest.

The length was perfect too, with all the side stuff on top, I 100% got my moneys worth.

I'd give it a 4.5/5 purely because of the boss fights being a little weak, the QTEs and some of the padding, but overall it's definitely one of the best superhero games I've ever played, and looks absolutely stunning. My daughter has been watching me on and off and watched me do the finale and was so impressed with the way it looks and acted, saying how it's like a film.

A perfect little pallet cleanser between playing big open world games. Was perfect on a handheld too, I played it on my Ally.

It's not much of a game in the traditional sense, it's more like a pick your own adventure TV show/comic, but that's OK for me because I really like narrative driven games like this, like your Life is Strange/As Dusk Falls etc.

The art style is amazing and vibrant and it's got a really gorgeous soundtrack accompanying it too.

Not sure what the dino aspect of it all really added other than to make it a little different and quirky but it was still enjoyable all the same as I really liked the majority of the characters and all the angst that came along with them. They were all really well acted too.

I can understand why people wouldn't give this a second look, it's hard one to even recommend but I liked my time with it.
