Better than gears 1, 100%. Me and my best friend at the time were constantly on co-op.

fun over the shoulder shooter with a chainsaw gun, the sequel. prettyfun

Really good entry but the overuse of the reaver enemy almost killed it for me. But other than that magnificent entry.

Rejoguei no xCloud.

Much weaker than it's predecessor, this game was honestly so boring. It had moments of fun going through mobs, but this was a letdown. I disliked this game so much I didn't even bother to play Gears 3.

Playing this in 2022 was a mistake, and I can't believe the fan base considers original Gears games better than Coalition output. Gears 5 has many ways to force you out of cover and create interesting positioning decisions – be it explosives, rushdown melee enemies, flankers, or enemies that require flanking to kill. Here the peak encounter design is to give an enemy a high cover where your only consideration is which flank they have exposed to shoot from. Set pieces were impressive in 2008 now aren't much more than shooting galleries and some contextual actions in the environment. And oh god these games used to be brown, so, so brown. Wish I left Gears 2 as a distant memory of summer split screen past, time hasn't been kind to it

A step up from Gears 1 in every single way. I really enjoyed it when the narrative focused on characters instead of the over-arching locust threat. All of the Dom stuff is A+ but when that arc was done, it left me wanting more. The ending is also a bit of a let down. It happens so suddenly out of nowhere.

Overall, Gears 2 is blast. It's where the mechanics, art and level design finally get a chance to shine. The narrative isn't perfect but it's a huge step up from Gears 1 which I appreciate.

Yeah, this fixed pretty much all the problems I had with the original game. Takes a formula and runs with it, giving variations and twists every chapter until a thrilling finale. A true blockbuster.

Gears of War 2 certainly shows its age playing it all these years later. My first experience with the series was the Ultimate Edition of the original GOW so taking this step backwards was certainly sobering. Despite the rough edges the games still plays very well all these years later. The loop of getting into cover, taking your shot and then 'instant' reload is consistently enjoyable. I was pretty impressed with the number of large scale set pieces in this game, from riding on multiple Locust beasts to an entire city collapsing around you as you continue to fight. The additions to Dom's character are also fairly compelling, especially from a 2008 perspective. However I think this game certainly suffers from playing it after many other superior cover-based shooters in the years since. Even a game like Uncharted 2, which came out within a year or so of GOW2 completely outclasses it in terms of set pieces, story and general presentation. GOW2 is a fun romp, with still surprisingly crunchy and satisfying combat. It's a step up from the original in terms of story and gameplay but GOW2 has been far surpassed by similar shooters since it's release. It's a good time capsule of what shooters were like at the time and certainly was a major step forward in their evolution , but in retrospect this was only the first tentative step of many still to come.

There's a man out there in a Tapout shirt and Oakley sunglasses who cried to that scene with Dom and his wife

Great sequel, great multiplayer.

Eng: The second Gears of War game is probably the best of the first trilogy, as an action shooter transcends the genre a bit by focusing on a serious story, with tragic moments (the loss of Maria by Dom) or different adventure moments, such as the trip on the Nexus (complete madness). Good bosses and mini-bosses, and an iconic protagonist.

Played on Hardcore Difficulty.

As the saga of the Beefcake Boys continues to evolve and grow ever more complicated, so does the capabilities of its developers.

Gears of War 2 extracts everything that its predecessor did perfectly in terms of level design, encounter structure, and weapon feel and adds a big splash of the biggest things that big prestige games today excel at: pacing and storytelling. Gone are the long, winding slogs of endless linked battles; in its place are excellent battles broken up by meaningful story beats, and entertaining breaks from the traditional Gears action.

There's a few wonky checkpoints that are a bit too long, and a few sequences that feel a little clunky involving some mounted turrets!

BUT

There's a tank mission!

There's a sequence that's a Panzer Dragoon-like where you ride a Reaver and spin around while shooting dudes!

There's multiple boss encounters that challenge your skill with the game's mechanics, as opposed to your patience!

There's some phenomenal musical score, and perhaps one of the earliest examples of truly genuine emotional storytelling in a game like this.

I stand in awe of everything Gears of War 2 represented in 2008, and what it continues to represent in 2021 on the Xbox Series X in pristine 4K at 60 frames per second.

God bless the Beefcake Boys. Onwards to Gears of War 3.

I have absolutely no idea how a good amount of people consider this to be the best Gears game. The writing is atrocious, the environments are universally bland and ugly, and the level design is mediocre at best. It's nowhere near as campy as the first, which makes all the bad parts stick out more.

the best thing about this game were the multiplayer maps, as the story wasnt as great as the first one, but a very decent sequel.

A great gears game, improve in some things, but dissapoints on others, the feeling of the game is better here, but somehow the story isn't the best, and the game still looks the same as always, grey as fuck

Porém tudo mudou ao jogar Gears of War 2.

A very interesting improvement on the first game. The combat feels a bit better, but the level design really kicks it up a notch. There's a lot of varied things to hide behind, half the time they snap in and out, or use some mechanism to go up and down that can be used by you or the enemy. No real weird boss fights since they kind of sucked in the first game anyway.

The story definitely aims more for mystery and emotion but to mixed results. Doms search for his wife is well done, but Marcus remains capable of only anger and it is difficult to empathize with him. Even Tai's suicide comes a bit too early and Marcus doesn't mention it much past its occurrence. The main plot hints at even more mystery with the Fenix family and their connection to the Locus - plus a new threat of infection drives them to madness. Why is the queen basically human??

The game also drops a number of horror elements from the first game to aim more at action. Less dark parts, no berserkers, no weird bats... But I miss those crazy things. They were a great enemy. It also feels even more focused for co-op than the previous one, which obviously reminds me of my first playthrough a decade or so ago with Ibn. I've included a screenshot of the infamous scene with the giant worm, hahaha.

Onto the third game!

Final Grade - B+
