Terrible and/or Failed Videogame Revivals

Every coin has two sides, and every list has a shitty counterpart. Be it mismanagement, terrible decisions or horrible design, these are the revivals that failed both as a continuation or reset to a series that more often than not happens out of a misunderstanding of what the consumers want, tho there are exceptions of curse.

At this point I'm a broken record, but as always, suggestions are more than welcomed and I would be thrilled to read what everyone has to add or say about this topic, so feel free to drop by!

To my knowledge it isn’t that terrible all things considered, but it lacks a ton of the spirit of the series and well... let's just say that it didn't work that well as a reboot.

I actually wouldn't say Bubsy belongs. It did decently well afaik and wasn't disliked, both of which were contributing factors in it getting a sequel, Paws on Fire. THAT game did flop, however.

@STRM Some people said some of these in the Discord server, but TM (2012) and GH Live weren't mentioned and are perfect fits. Thank you!

Do cancelled games count? The backlash to the reveal trailer for the mobile Commander Keen game was so bad that they just never spoke about it again

@thealexmott I just added that one! Someone mentioned it on the server and yeah, it counts for sure, specially looking at how it was going to be. Keen was spared from a terrible fate...

Some of these are a little questionable given their proximity to other highly successful entries.

@Weatherby I'm open for counter-arguments as much as I am for suggestion! Tho keep in mind I tend to consider a revival ''failed'' not only if it killed the franchise, but also if it made it go dormant for a long while or failed to establish a new beggining (like with failed reboots)

I think Overwatch 2 and Metal Gear Survive don't really qualify as revivals. The Phantom Pain was still current and performed well, Konami was just trying to pinch something out using that engine and people weren't having it. Overwatch 2 is ostensibly a retooling of a live service that was supported all the way up to launch of the new product, and in the strictest profit-driven sense, I'm not so sure you could call it a failure.

I think Overwatch 2 should stay if not just because it's funny.

Overwatch 2 earned 100 million in its first three months. I think regardless of its problems (of which there are many) it is categorically not a "failure."

@Weatherby Nah you are right, for all intents and purposes of the list, OW2 doesn't really count. However, I'll kee Survive since it can be seen as a revival of the MG series (it doesn't have Solid on the title which, I know, it's a strech, but still) and after it we haven't seen a single new MG or MGS game, so I think it counts as a failed revival.

The lack of a new Metal Gear isn't so much due to Survive, so much as Konami going dormant in general.

Saints Row 2022
Back 4 Blood, kinda.

Oh and Mario Strikers: Battle League

@Weatherby I mean that is kinda true, but I don't think that it sold a lot in the first place. And it's not like the others series form Konami didn't have other entries in that time, like Contra, Bomberman or ports and collections for Castlevania.

@Clearin I don't think Back4Blood should count since it's more of a spiritual succesor for Left4Dead than a direct sequel, but that Saints Row remake I think fits perfectly considering the reception. I'll add it right now!

Oh and also, I think it's a bit too soon to say what impact Battle League will have on the franchise, so I'm gonna not gonna add it, bit will sure take it into account if I ever do a ''terrible sequels'' list

Fucking Bayonetta 3, not sure if it was supposed to be a "revival" persay but it was definitely a reboot

@moschidae I mean, I don't think it could qualify as a failure since it seems that it actually sold pretty well and earlier this year we got another entry in the series, and as for being ''terrible''... was it really that bad? Since release I've seen a lot of different opinions around it, some negative and others positive. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on its quality, that plus the fact it didn't sold poorly, killed the franchise or that I haven't played it make me a bit against adding it, but if there's a particular reason that would push it over the ''bad revival'' line, I'd be interested to hear it and add it to the list.

Id consider it a revival because that game was in development for... 6 years, or so? Maybe longer. It also just functioned completely differently from the other two bayonetta titles, both in terms of gameplay and narrative/worldbuilding. Bayonetta 3 had some of the most foul character writing ive ever seen in a game, they completely ruined multiple people. Im not a big bayo fan but even i noticed how shitty it was, i mean bayonetta herself always felt like a sort of power fantasy character but shes constantly helpless in 3, and they force her to fall in love with a random dude she never had any interest in, and they made her have a kid with him. Then they killed bayo. And now the kid literally no one likes is the protag. They did this weird Endgame multiple-universe plotline just to have an excuse to capitalize on and make (apparently many more) games.

Sorry, that was a bit of a rant but yeah i guess my point is i would see it as fitting on the list because 3 acted as a huge direction change for the series and despite the sales it sucks big time for anyone with a lick of sense lol.

@moschidae That sounds not great in the slighties, but still, I do not think it really meets the criteria to enter the list... however, it seems that ot would be a perfect fit for a bad sequels list, like some others they did in the server. I'll probably get around doing it soon (potentially tomorrow) and I'll be sure to be to put Bayo 3 as your suggestions, they definitevely dropped the ball story wise taking all of that into account.

Metroid Prime Federation Force.

Whatever qualities it may have, it was a spinoff that released when fan were STARVING for a mainline Metroid. After it, the series went dormant until an external company from another country decided to remake Metroid 2, and then dormant again for many years until Dread released.

@CDX That's asbolutely tue, I'll add it right now!

As much as I hate to admit it, Blaster Master: Blasting Again belongs here.
You could probably make an argument for Shinobi 3D too.

@DeltaWDunn I didn't even know that Blaster Master game existed.

I think they both fit, the first one looks like isn't that great and it killed the series for a while, and there hasn't been another Shinobi game since Shinobi 3D. I'll add them both!

If there is a revival that deeply annoys me, it's Disgaea 6.

I got into the series when i was at high school woth 5 on the Switch, but it was just a port of a 2015 rpg from the PS4 right at the start of the Switch's life span, so i can say it haven't got a new game for a while.

5 years after 5, i saw the announcement of Disgaea 6, and it was the first game in the series to use 3D character models instead of 2D sprites and it was raising the level limit from 9999 to 9999999 and it got me pumped. But the more footage released the less excited i've became, as the animations weren't as over-the-top and expressive as the 2D ones and they were trying to simplify the mechanics, which is fair, since Disgaea gameplay is bloated as hell and i was still cautiously optmistic.

But when it got near the release, i've downloaded the demo on E-Shop, and it disappointed the hell outta me. There is difference between making the gameplay more accesible and dumbing it down, and 6 falls on the latter and it got me bored and angry, like i know it's a demo, but i could tell it was barely any good, and the story on the beggining didn't work for me.

I decided to not buy the game and just watch the cutscenes on youtube, and it was story of the main franchise, with shitty plot, shitty characters (only one was half-decent) and unfunny jokes, and to rub salt on the wound, the only actual funny ones were on DLC.

This shit angers me so much, it's unbelievable.

@Yanser94 Mmh... this may be like a case with Bayonetta 3 where it could be considered more of a ''bad sequel'' than a ''bad revival''. While it's true that there was a 6 year gap bettween 5 and 6, even if there weren't brand new games, the series had a few remasters and ports in the meantime, like 1 and 2 Complete, so it's not like the series was gone. Also 7 comes out later this year on the West, so it's not like it also killed the franchise or something like that. Again, I'll note it for when I do a bad sequels list, but as for revivals, I don't think it fits the best. Either way, thank you!

@DeemonAndGames Sorry, i couldn't think of anything

@Yanser94 Hey now, you don't have to apologize at all! It's still a nice suggestion, and once I do the ''bad sequels'' list I'll add it and credit it as your addition. I also didn't know anything about the Disgaea series, and discovering a bit about it was super interesting. Again, thank you, I’ll be sure to include that game in that future list!

bomberman act 0 would be better if i didnt have to play bomberman. And it sucks that Wolfenstein 2009 was a failure cause it is just the best Wolfenstein
