Whispy Woods Fights Ranked

Everyone knows Whispy Woods as that dumbass tree with a face that you have to fight in Kirby games, and over the years, he has had A LOT of boss fights, so today, we are gonna go through each one of them and determine which are the best and worst.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Master Crown

To be completely honest, I didn't expect this to get the top spot, all because I forgot about it completely. However, when I learned about it again, I knew it had to go on top, because LOOK AT THIS THING! Whispy went from a regular tree to this gigantic, demonic cthulu beast from another dimension, and it is AMAZING! The fight is incredible right from the beginning, with him shooting out huge roots at you through dimensional portals, dropping enchanted apple bombs onto you, and shooting exploding lasers out of his eyeball! Naturally, when he takes enough damage, that's when things kick into overdrive, as he increases the power of all of his attacks, sending out multiple giant lasers that go all across the arena, giant leaves flying at you, multiple roots coming in at all directions, it is utter chaos. And to top it all off, it ends with you entering a quicktime event that has you slashing away at him with an Ultra Sword, and OOOOOO, does it feel ever so sweet to take him down like that. While most of the other Whispy fights on this list are good, or even amazing, I can't give the top spot to anyone but the Master Crown, as while the fight isn't that hard, it still manages to be an amazing spectacle that made playing through this remake of a classic game all worth it.

Kirby: Planet Robobot
Kirby: Planet Robobot
Clanky Woods
Clanky Woods 2.0

Despite not getting the top spot, this fight deserves ALL the praise it can get. It's only natural that the best Kirby game has an incredible Whispy fight, cause in this game, we get Clanky Woods, where instead of being a tree, he is a GIANT CARNIVOROUS TREE ROBOT! Right from the get-go, he fights differently from any other incarnation of the boss, with him shooting missiles, drilling the ground to throw rocks at you, trying to drill you as well, and he even drops the green domes from his head as bombs onto you. Once you damage him enough, he then amps things up by raising the arena up, and this goes even further when you damage him further, raising the arena up so high to where you are now trapped in this enclosure he has made for you. From here, missiles will shoot out from the walls, you gotta knock his bombs back at him, and he will jump into the space himself to try to drill you into oblivion. This fight is an absolute blast from start to finish, with everything he does being over-the-top and amazing, and while the fight still isn't that hard, I just simply can't knock it for that, as it is too fun regardless. Not to mention, his design is fucking amazing, and that also goes for Clanky Woods 2.0 as well.

2

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Tropic Woods
Phantom Tropic Woods

For the first true 3D Kirby game, we get our first true 3D fight against Whispy Woods, with us facing against another relative(?), Tropic Woods, and it ROCKS! The fight starts out with Tropic using 3D versions of Whispy's basic attacks, being a lot more lethal then we have previously seen, and when he takes enough damage, naturally, shit gets real. He'll start amping up his breath attack, putting up gates to protect himself, and even sending his roots all over the arena to hurt you and trip you up. All of these attacks are amped up even further whenever you fight the stronger Phantom Fropic Woods, but no matter who you fight, it is still a pretty great boss against Tropic Woods we got here, and I hope that if we ever get another 3D Kirby title down the road, the quality only goes up from here.

3

Kirby Triple Deluxe
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Flowery Woods
Flowery Woods EX

Rather then getting Whispy Woods this time around, we actually get to take on his... relative(?) Flowery Woods, and unlike Whispy, he actually puts up quite a fight. At first, he behaves normally as you would expect, but when he takes enough damage, he changes things up DRASTICALLY, jumping in the background and throwing many different attacks at you, including growing roots that will slam down on the ground and try to crush you. From here, he will periodically jump back and forth from the background and foreground, which will give you the ability to take him out. That's cool enough, but then you get to the EX form of Flowery Woods, and he throws out more powerful attacks, while also unfolding himself, becoming a sawblade of destruction, and swiping across the screen to try to take you out! This is, without a doubt, the first truly fantastic fight from Whispy/Flowery that we have gotten in the entire series, and as a longtime fan of the franchise, it was a joy to finally have a proper fight against him. Also, I forgot how awesome the boss fight music is in this game, holy shit, I need to replay Triple Deluxe SO BADLY!

4

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Whispy Woods

Being the first "3D" battle in the series, this one changes things up quite a bit by having you first take out these adorable Whispy Woods children while Whispy himself attacks you from the middle of the arena. Once you take out all of his children, he then gets PISSED OFF, and he starts amping up all of his attacks, while sending out his roots to hurt you, with those being the next weak point you need to take out. It isn't anymore complex then any other Whispy fight, but it does have a lot more going on, so I will give it massive props for that.

5

Kirby Mass Attack
Kirby Mass Attack
Whispy Woods

This fight actually has Whispy trying out a lot of new things this time around. He does what he normally does for most of the fight, but as you keep dealing damage to him, he'll start to grow more segments to take out, with these segments being able to grow mushrooms and spikes out just to slow you down. Given how the game works, it can also be somewhat of a challenge if you aren't used to it, so I will definitely give it props for that.

6

Kirby's Dream Land 3
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Whispy Woods

This one starts out normal enough, with Whispy shooting air and fruits at you like he usually does, but then suddenly, whenever you take out enough of his health, he then goes RAVENOUS, with a menacing face and him starting to chase you on foot while still ahoot fruits at you. That alone makes this the best Whispy fight of the original Dream Land trilogy, because how can you not love a face like that?

7

Kirby Mass Attack
Kirby Mass Attack
This fight comes to us in the sub-game that basically turns Kirby into a shmup, and the fight itself is... decent. As per usual, he doesn't do much, and he can be taken down pretty quickly, along with the other enemies with him, but it is a nice change of pace having a fight with him in this different style, so I'd say it's pretty good overall.

8

Kirby Star Allies
Kirby Star Allies
Whispy Woods
Yggsy Woods
Parallel Woods

Much like the game itself, the Whispy Woods fights here is pretty average for the most part, with not much to say about it. It starts out doing the same ol' stuff you have come to expect, but then when he takes enough damage, he jumps into the middle of the arena, gets bigger, and starts to amp up his attacks... that's pretty much about it. Neither of the other versions of this fight change things drastically either, but either way, they are all decent enough fights.

9

Kirby's Return to Dream Land
Kirby's Return to Dream Land
Whispy Woods
Whispy Woods EX

Despite the graphical upgrade, this fight is, once again, pretty average for this series, as for the most part, Whispy does the same shit we have all seen time and time again. After taking enough damage, he does grow two times as big, and he now has the ability to swallow you whole, but aside from that, and one version of him being able to shoot roots from the ground, there's not much else to be seen here.

10

Kirby's Dream Land 2
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Whispy Woods

This fight actually changes things up compared to the fights in the preceding games, with Whispy starting out the fight wearing... a weird pair of glasses and a mask, with him also now having a new attack where he shoots his roots up from the ground to attack you. Once you damage him enough, he then loses the glasses and mask and starts attacking you regularly, while also mixing in the roots from before. It isn't that much more different or difficult from the previous games' fights, but it at least shakes things up and makes things slightly more interesting, whic. I can definitely appreciate.

11

Kirby Fighters 2
Kirby Fighters 2
Twin Woods

So admittedly, at the time of me making this list, I haven't actually played Kirby Fighters 2, but I don't need to have in order to judge this Whispy fight. It's just Twin Woods, with no real extra bells or whistles added, with the exception of them being able to make a giant apple at times. Other then that, it's as generic as they come.

12

Kirby Super Star Ultra
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Whispy and Twin Woods

Once again, since this is a remake of Super Star, not much has changed about the fight between the two different games. There are different versions of Whispy Woods now that you fight, and there's a new attack he can pull off where he spins around and drops a bunch of stuff on you, but aside from that, it's the same ol' stuff you have seen before.

13

Kirby Super Star
Kirby Super Star
Whispy Woods
Twin Woods

As is tradition, this fight also plays out exactly like most of the previous fights, except this time, there are now parts where you will fight TWO Whispy Woods at the same time!............. there's nothing different about them, there just so happens to be two now. Whoop-de-fucking-doo,

14

Kirby's Epic Yarn
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Whispy Woods

So, this one TECHNICALLY isn't a boss fight, but you do fight him to an extent, so I'd say it counts. He doesn't do anything different here, so the fight itself isn't too exciting, but I find it hilarious that you take him on while you are a FUCKING TANK, and it makes me feel even more bad for the poor guy as a result. He just can't catch a break!

15

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Whispy Woods
Sky-High Whispy Woods

This one works somewhat differently from your typical Whispy fight, but it mostly remains the same. These fights put primary focus in you just maneuvering Kirby through different obstacles of vines and bombs that drop from the ceiling every so often, collecting stars and fruit so that you can charge at him and take him down. He sometimes changes things up by blowing you back to get a proper advantage, and in one of these fights, he can even summon millipedes to attack you, but aside from that, this fight isn't too remarkable.

16

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
King Golem

Yeah, I know this one TECHNICALLY isn't a Whispy Woods fight, but he pretty much behaves exactly like Whispy Woods, so I think he counts. Besides, he doesn't do that much to stand out from Whispy, other then dropping an enemy in every so often, so it is just another average fight at the end of the day.

17

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Whispy Woods

Since this is a remake of Kirby's Adventure, it changes nothing about the fight whatsoever, but it does look and sound nicer then the original, so it is automatically better.

18

Kirby's Adventure
Kirby's Adventure
Whispy Woods

This version of the fight remains practically unchanged from the original in terms of what Whispy can do, with the only difference between the two being that there is now color to this fight, and you have access to the copy abilities to take him down. It isn't any better or worse then the previous fight, but it can be beaten quicker due to said copy abilities, so that automatically makes it better.

19

Kirby Mass Attack
Kirby Mass Attack
So, in Kirby Mass Attack, there are several side modes in the game that feature their own Whispy Woods fights, and this one is a nod to Kirby's Pinball Land!........ OH JOY. However, unlike that game, this one actually feels a lot more fun to play, not just because of the visuals and audio, but because there isn't any chance of being fucked over by luck..... or at least, there isn't that much of that here, so thank god for that.

20

Kirby's Block Ball
Kirby's Block Ball
(Couldn't find a video of the boss fight by itself on YouTube)

This fight is essentially the same as the one from Pinball Land, except this time around, it is actually fun! It works the exact same way, with Whispy doing the exact same things, but given the fact that you have Breakout controls to work with instead, it feels much more manageable, and luck won't potentially screw you over, which is definitely a plus in my book. Sure, there can be some tight moments in the fight where it can be hard to not take damage, but it is still perfectly manageable, and much more fun then in Pinball Land.

21

Kirby's Avalanche
Kirby's Avalanche
Whispy Woods

There's not much to say about this one either, seeing as how he functions like all of the other opponents in this game, who just challenges you to Puyo Puyo. It isn't that hard of a match, and the amount of enjoyment you would get out of it will be based on how much you like Puyo Puyo, which I do like, but not too much.

22

Kirby's Dream Land
Kirby's Dream Land
Whispy Woods

This is the original Whispy Woods battle, the one that started the tradition and is the golden standard that all fights after have to abide by, and it is...... ok. He does the basic shit that most of these do, staying on one side of the screen, shooting air at you, and dropping apples and other objects down on you sometimes. It is as basic as basic gets, and since you don't have copy abilities in this game, it is a tedious fight as well, with you needing to constantly shoot objects back at him, but it works for what it is at the end of the day.

23

Kirby's Pinball Land
Kirby's Pinball Land
Whispy Woods

Why yes, there is a Whispy Woods boss fight in the pinball game, and it sucks! To defeat him, all you have to do is just to launch Kirby at him with the pinball flippers, but the problem is that, since pinball is all themed around luck, there can be plenty of times where you end up flat out missing him just because Kirby wasn't positioned in the exact spot on that flipper you needed to hit. Not to mention, throughout the whole fight, Whispy is dropping these Gordos down onto your flippers, disabling them temporarily, and if Kirby is on that side of the screen when that happens, OOPS, he fell down the hole, and you gotta get back up and do the whole thing over again! So, the moral of the story here is that pinball games shouldn't have boss fights.

Loved this! I'm really glad to see love for the Master Crown fight, even if it isn't technically a normal Whispy Woods fight, it's such a cool encounter and final send off for the Magolor epilogue, some for Clanky Woods. I don't know who at HAL came up with his design but they deserve a raise, it's probably the best mechanical version of a previous enemy in the entire game and one of the better first bosses of the series. Once again, amazing ranking!
Really fun list idea! My favorites were always Superstar's Whispy because he's simple yet amusingly easy to kill in just a few seconds. My number 1 though has to go to Clanky woods, I think you put it best, but he's very different in how you fight him, yet still familiar. The stage transformation as well is unexpected yet really engaging, great fight overall.

He is NOT a dumbass tree. he is my best friend.

In general, I agree with almost everything, I just don't think Master Crown deserved to be there because it's a completely different entity.
