Winner of Best Action Adventure Game, Best Sequel, Best Open World Game, and the 2023 Game of the Year

I mean, what is there left to say?

It’s a game that builds off the framework of the already incredibly popular Breath of the Wild to show you something new. It’s a game that plays on your expectations from BoTW to craft new, unusual feelings in the face of change. It’s a game that spends so much time on the passage of time, how the familiar becomes unfamiliar, how all of us can only watch as the present becomes the ancient past. It’s a game that celebrates those changes and encourages the exploration of the new. It’s a game that presents new, exciting mechanics with fresh, exhilarating opportunities for creativity. It’s a game that lets you soar through the sky, dig beneath the ground. It’s a game that lets you build giant robots or incredible art pieces. It’s a game that offers the player incredibly diverse toolkits, all for the purpose of individual exploration and creativity.

It’s Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The one and only.

Winner of Best RPG and Best Game With Customizable Protagonists

What a wonderful surprise.

The first Baldur’s Gate game was released in 1998. The second, in 2000. The final expansion pack, 2001. Then, nothing. The interest in the Forgotten Realms setting, or even Dungeons and Dragons, seemed to be diminishing. But the sweeping changes in fandom culture can’t be understated. Tabletop games are more accessible than ever for any variety of interest or subgenre a person might pursue.

But even beyond the conversation about people finally being ready for a return to Baldur’s Gate, or a conversation about the recent resurgence in tabletop popularity, there’s the simple fact that Baldur’s Gate III is just fun. It's a game that offers a truly shocking amount of content. Almost every incidental decision or action seems to be accounted for, with unique dialogue and consequences for all the different player choices one can make. It's a game where a bad dice roll can mean your player character can die from a vampire bite, get revived, and then lecture the vampire on accidentally killing you. It's a game where you can talk to a cat named His Majesty, who has the personality to match. It’s a game that

But I think what truly speaks to the game’s strength is in our new category for this poll: Best New Character. No character from Baldur’s Gate III managed to top the rankings of favorite characters. However, Baldur’s Gate III was the game with the most characters people submitted as their favorites. Everyone who played Baldur’s Gate had a particular favorite character, tailored to their own preferences and enjoyment. No single character got more votes than the others, but it was the game with the most characters that people enjoyed. And that speaks to something special.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

Winner of our Best Old Game Award and Best Puzzle Game

A garbage dump. A red-haired woman. A corpse.

From its opening moments, Ghost Trick crafts an elaborate tale of mystery, misdirection, and mystical, as our titular Phantom Detective begins his journey to uncover the truth behind his death. Released at the end of the Nintendo DS life cycle in 2010, the game was a commercial failure for Capcom. Yet conversation around the game has maintained a steady pace, as Shu Takumi’s little gem gained a strong cult following. The 2023 remaster proved to be a major success for the company. In its first week, Ghost Trick Remastered gained $600,000 and sold 30,000 copies on Steam alone. According to game sales for November 2023, the game sold another 10,000 copies for another $200,000, still maintaining a solid pace of sales months later. After years of word-of-mouth, Ghost Trick finally found an audience for its ambitious and gorgeous storytelling. The game was finally accessible for people who had heard its praises for a decade. And, with any luck, there’s finally a potential for the ideas presented by Shu Takumi and the Capcom team to present new, exciting ideas for the company.

Despite not being a new character per se, I do have to give it up for our winner of Best New Character: Missile the Dog.

Octopath Traveler II
Octopath Traveler II
16 points, five votes. 4 + 3 + 2 + 5 + 2

When Octopath Traveler 1 came out in 2018, it was kind of a big moment for pixel rpgs. The "HD-2D" art-style was a stunning graphical wonder. There was some broad criticism by some people who considered it ugly or "lazy", but like most of the endless online discourse, it faded away once there was something else to focus on. But within the last five years, the HD 2D style has shown it might be here to stay. It encouraged Square Enix to consider bringing back lost pixel RPGs that players are still invested in. After several poor remaster attempts, the Final Fantasy Remasters have been really positively received. Bolstered by that, the Live A Live HD-2D remake was released to rave reviews across the seas. I think there's an argument to be made that those re-releases wouldn't exist without the existence of Octopath 1.

Still, the first game was burdened with some major problems. Despite its marketing around 8 party members, the cast virtually never interacts with each other across the entire game. The "travel banters" where they did interact was exceptionally easy to miss content. The game also became notorious for its exceptional difficulty, making progression daunting for new players. Even finding the final boss of the game was locked behind various obtuse, unmarked side quests. The game sold a million copies, but the actual story didn't seem to leave much of a cultural impact.

To call Octopath Traveler II a triumph is an understatement. The game presents the artistic craft one expects from the Square Enix team, with gorgeous environmental and character design. The mechanics of OT1 get expanded and developed into new angles and strategies. The difficulty and progression design was more careful and clear to its audience. But most of all, the character work truly sang a beautiful melody. Whether it's the conflict between identity and systematic abuse in Throne’s story, the Pokemon style adventure of Ochette’s story, the long-suffering but always soldiering on Castti, or any of the other five main characters, the dynamics and storytelling truly shines in ways the previous entry couldn’t quite thread the needle on. Octopath Traveler 2 demonstrates the infinite potential of this franchise as it continues to grow and evolve, but it also showcases its current and present value. This is an engine that churns and clicks, baby. And it's got so much more to show you if you let it.

Pizza Tower
Pizza Tower
13 points, three votes. 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 2

Winner of the Best Platformer Award

Mix pizza, precision platforming, and an absurdist aesthetic together, you get goddamn Pizza Tower. With thousands of animation frames for its protagonist alone, Pizza Tower is a Herculean labor of love from Tour de Pizza. As Peppino Spaghetti desperately tries to cling to his sanity, only he can climb the titular Pizza Tower and vanquish the villainous Pizzaface that threatens his business. Pizza Tower’s sensibilities are daunting on a first impression, but the craft and joy behind each element makes for a masterful meal.

Misericorde: Volume One
Misericorde: Volume One
12 points, three votes. 4 + 5 + 3

Winner of the Best Visual Novel Award

1483. England. The War of the Roses is ending and change is coming to Europe.

For a small country convent, the change is signified by the death of one of their favorite nuns.

As an Anchoress, Sister Hedwig took an oath to never leave her cell; to devote herself entirely to God and provide spiritual support to all who came to her door. But as the only Sister who couldn't possibly have committed the crime, she has a new mission: solve the case, before the bishop closes the convent and the real killer goes unpunished.

It’s hard to describe the sheer depth of the text or the careful, precise pacing. It’s even harder when the story isn’t technically finished, as fans eagerly await future volumes of the story. But it’s hard to find a more stunning debut of a visual novel, a truly landmark entry into the history of visual novels. With endearing, flawed characters, an intriguing mystery, extensive historical consideration, and stunning art, Misericorde promises to be one of the most interesting stories on the vn landscape.

Final Fantasy XIV Online

Our Highest Ranked Returning Contender Award, two years in a row.

Two time winner is back to grab a third ranked victory. Final Fantasy 14 continues to hold a grip on people’s hearts. Year one of the poll, FFXIV dominated the list. Year two, FFXIV sat at 7th place. Year three, FFXIV hasn’t moved an inch. In fact, with 40 voters this year instead of 23, it gained an extra point over last year’s 10 points.

It's Final Fantasy XIV. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Chants of Sennaar

You wake up at the bottom of a tower, abandoned in a sarcophagus. You have only one method of progress: climb the ziggurat and reach the top. But, each section of the tower is filled with entirely different cultures and languages. Since each culture refuses to engage with each other, the protagonist must use their own observational and problem solving skills to decipher each language and rise up the tower.

Taking cues from games like Heaven’s Vault, Chants of Sennar’s core mechanic takes center stage in a fascinating examination of language both verbal and non-verbal. It's a game that demands, insists for full focus, to think about what it's presenting about identity and surroundings and communication. And it does it with empathy, grace, and ingenious puzzle design.

Cocoon
Cocoon

You are a bug. There is an orb. Each orb is a world, a puzzle piece, and the answer. You goal: explore and move forward.

Geometric Interactive is a new studio from former Playdead employees, the minds behind Limbo and Inside. And Cocoon takes many cues from these games: a silent, mysterious world. Puzzle exploration with switches and pulleys. A path forward. A single button controlling all action. A short, efficient game that wastes very little of player time. But beyond these expected elements, Cocoon advances its ideas into bold new territory. Mechanics layer upon each other, interacting and clashing together in fascinating systems. While no stranger to horror, Cocoon is often bright and colorful compared to the often dour and dark Limbo or Inside. As your number of orbs expands, offering new abilities and puzzle solutions, the complexity increases and challenges player expectations. It's a game that presents simple ideas, yet impossible solutions. Wildly inventive, ambitious, yet restrained, Cocoon’s place in the top 10 is well deserved.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

The Sega of the early 00s was a particular place and time for the company. The Dreamcast was experimenting with incredible, creative concepts from a company that was crumbling financially. Even twenty years later, the games on the Dreamcast are considered to include the height of Sega’s creative heights. The fanbase for that era still craves a return of that kind of artistry.

They still crave Jet Set Radio.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk wears its inspiration on its sleeve, picking off where the aesthetic and style of JSR left off. If anything, it advances the ideas leaps and bounds forward. The gameplay is smooth, the themes are ripe, and it’s all churning at an incredible rotation. I don’t know what the next iteration of this kind of game becomes, but the potential is infinite.

I was really excited to see the results, and even if I'm really happy to see my main pick on here, I'm even more impressed at the sheer effort this must have taken and how you gave an unique award/awards to each of them, thank you so much for taking the time to do this and amazing work!

I feel like I've learned a lot each time I do it, both about making polls and different games. I think next year I'll set the due date at 31st, I had multiple people message me on the 30th to mention they'd replace their first pick with Slay the Princess if they could.

But I'm really excited to add Cocoon to my switch, all the research I did on it really wowed me.
