the video games that made my 2023

Nothing here!

I was so glad to finally cross this cult classic off my list. Wonderful detective game with fantastic characters, a gripping narrative, deeply immersive gameplay, and a soul crushingly cynical ending that i’m still thinking about. A masterpiece and one of the most woefully underappreciated games in rockstar’s vast body of work.
Still one of my favorite games and possibly the best platformer I have ever played, with exciting and challenging gameplay, tight level design, and a very charming and moving story. A must play to say the least.
Fantastic game that very effectively utilizes the ubisoft open formula in unique and exciting ways. The combat, the story, and production value are also top notch.
Still love the shit out of this game despite the detrimental effects it had on the gaming industry and on the genre of open world games. Vaas, the gameplay, the setting, and the atmosphere are still fucking top notch.
An overall great conclusion to one of my new favorite gaming trilogies.
Such a fantastic and beautiful experience, with a moving story, an atmosphere and world that totally grips you, and a murderers row of exhilarating and challenging boss fights. Teenage me had no fucking clue what he was talking about.
It was very fun to revisit one of my all time favorites and the seminal classic that helped to shape my taste in games. The Arkham series would only continue to grow in scope and production value but the atmosphere, visual storytelling, the level design, and pacing here remain unmatched. I love it.
Flawless sequel to Arkham Asylum, with a great, well paced story, goated gameplay and fluid combat, an open world with engaging, unique side content and a tremendous sense of scope. An unassailable masterpiece of the gaming industry.
A woefully underrated entry in the fantastic Arkham series.
A fantastic sequel to God Of War 2018 despite the occasional pacing issues and a general lack of narrative cohesion. When this game is at its best though (which is 98% of the time) it was an utterly enthralling, emotionally gripping, and exhilarating blockbuster gaming experience that I couldn’t put down, punctuated by top notch production value, phenomenal voice acting, and engaging gameplay. A must play if you own a playstation 4 or playstation 5.
My favorite Grand Theft Auto game, one of the best games rockstar ever made, and one of my favorite games of all time in general, with a deeply immersive world, fantastic and nuanced characters, and an incredibly thematic and surprisingly emotional narrative about revenge and the fallacy of the american dream.
A fantastic experience from top to bottom and one of the best superhero games ever made.
A wonderful experience and one of the best, most memorable, and emotionally affecting games that I’ve played this year. Go into it as cold as possible.
A masterful immersive sim, with gripping atmosphere, well wrought level design, polished and very fun gameplay, and an intriguing story that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. I loved it.
Still a very fun riff on the open world genre and one of the playstation 3’s best games.
Another childhood favorite that I loved revisiting. Such a charming, breathlessly exciting, and tautly paced action adventure game, with gameplay mechanics that still hold up to modern standards.
It’s fucking Uncharted 2 dude.
A very fun, well made, well paced hack and slash superhero game thats way better than it has any right to be given the rather awful licensed material that it’s based on.
One of the most purely entertaining video game experiences I’ve had this year, with butter smooth gameplay, blisteringly fast paced levels, a crude but charming art style, and a collection of challenging and unique boss battles. I fucking loved it.
Very enjoyable game. It doesn’t quite reach the singular heights of Journey (a very obvious comparison but one worth mentioning) but it still offers a very beautiful and atmospheric sensory experience.
Amazing storytelling and fantastic characters. Lee Everett is one of my gaming goats.
It definitely grew on me on a replay. A very unique and enjoyable puzzle platformer experience.
Just as wonderfully weird and unique as I remembered it to be.
One of the most unique games i’ve played all year, with super detailed and engaging storytelling, a fantastic soundtrack, and a patient but still thrilling and addicting gameplay loop. I can’t wait to see what Lucas Pope does next.
I loved this. Amazing survival horror experience that had me completely enthralled through its intense gameplay and captivating atmosphere.
Another example of teenage me being a dumb asshole. One of the most unique games I have ever played.
Still a very engaging first person shooter experience even today despite the horribly designed and languidly paced zen sections towards the end.
A fantastic sequel to the first Half Life game, with even more story, gameplay variety, and highly memorable action set pieces that still play like gangbusters. It’s very much worthy of its sterling reputation.
A very solid expansion to Half Life 2 that sets up Episode 2 very effectively. The hospital set piece is a definite standout and Alyx Vance remains a wonderful companion.
One of the best game expansions i’ve ever played next to Blood And Wine for The Witcher 3. The gameplay, pacing, storytelling, and set pieces are all top notch here, culminating in a legendary cliffhanger ending that made my jaw drop.
Wonderful game and one of my all time favorites. I still loving coming back to it today.
