the nes doesn't suck - you do
"the nes is shit besides a few games"
i can't count how many times i've seen this sentiment regurgitated. it's stupid, but in fairness the nes has a vast library. there's well over 700 titles and as a result there's going to be a fair amount of landmines. the purpose of this list is to help guide the less patient to the actual gems - ideally some that they might've never heard of
not every game here will be your cup of tea, but everything listed is at least worth trying. ranked loosely by difficulty

This list needs Ice Hockey
so true...
Summer 92 recca is very underrated
Would Crystalis be included, I admit I have yet to play it, but every review I've seen so far considers it a solid Action/Adventure game.
Also, not wanting to criticize Snoman gaming, but why do I feel that criticism on the NES increased thanks to his video?

@usuariodiverso it's a cool game from what i played of it, but definitely not something i'd right-off-the-bat recommend to someone who's put off by the nes. same goes for recca @zombiehunter837
also, i don't know who that is, but this is a sentiment that's gone around for a long time and i think it's largely due to (as much as i love his early content) the avgn and his many imitators

also just the general prevailing opinion that old=bad and new=good. just look at any game magazine from the ps1 days and you'll see games with pixel art getting slammed for "looking old" in contrast to some brand new, cutting-edge 3d game which looks like total shit comparatively
I feel like Little Samson belongs here. Not only is it one of the best on the console, but it also has an easy mode so I think pretty much anyone could enjoy it.
This triggered a memory of mine where a guy in 2013 told me Fire Emblem was archaic cause no one wants to play games where characters move around the level on squares.
Just an incredible statement looking back lmao.

@deltawdunn good call. i've never actually played that one and i'm surprised it looks as good as it does
@toasterninja me when my braincells don't work. same energy as "turn based combat is archaic"

@shinespark i believe people have been poisoned by critics and the like to believe games are an objective science rather than an expressive art form. that coupled with the whole aforementioned new=good/old=bad mentality, as well as the fact that the lowest common denominator demographic has gotten progressively dumber and more wide-reaching, it's become easier than ever for someone to assume something's shit just because it doesn't have the design sensibilities they're accustomed to
these people you're citing wouldn't look back at games from the 80s and think about why they were well received in their time; they would look at how "old" they are and say, "how could anyone ever play this when xyz exists??"
also, i've noticed over time that gamers generally don't like to be wrong. if they don't get something or they're bad, then that's often seen as a hindrance and the fault of the game
regardless it's all silly

i think my biggest issue with the "turn based combat sucks"' stance is that it typically assumes every turn based rpg is just dragon quest 1 - mindlessly grinding exp from small enemies so you can fight bigger enemies - when in reality there's plenty of games with strong party building mechanics and interesting battle systems that are way more engaging then pressing attack and healing occasionally
@chandler "it's become easier than ever for someone to assume something's shit just because it doesn't have the design sensibilities they're accustomed to"
I see this so much. Many people simply don't want to learn or have anything outside their comfort zone, especially when it comes to stuff like controls. If the game doesn't 'feel' good, the midair control is limited, or if there's a learning curve to controls a lot of people just won't play it. I guess I understand it to an extent (especially if one only plays a game or two a year), but it is disappointing.

@deltawdunn it's something that doesn't really surprise or bother me in general, but it makes me turn my head when i see the sentiment in actual gaming communities. being interested in games but outright rejecting such a large chunk of them off preconceived notions is very lame
@shinespark i feel it's less the internet (though it perpetuates any trend nowadays really) and more just critics gradually getting harsher over time. in the 80s and 90s it was super taboo to give a game a low rating but towards the 00s it got a lot more regular to shit on things
agree on outdated and archaic being lame buzzwords. overrated doesn't bother me because it's so deeply rooted in subjectivity, whereas the former two have a stronger air of objectivity to them. it's a bold claim to say something's archaic - especially when all you give a shit about is games released in the past 10-15 years

honestly im guilty of this sentiment as well but always say right after that contra, castlevania and megaman are the only good ones. good list btw
@imshitting420 so here's the way i see that: the ps5 is out right now and it has like, one, maybe two games exclusive to it that really justify its existence beyond being a beefed up ps4. and its library is not very large to begin with
you've played maybe a handful of nes games and already liked a couple. there's 700+. you're bound to find more you like. check out something on the lower end of this list. give little samson, ducktales or metal storm a shot. give fire 'n ice a shot if you like puzzle platformers. or shit - play kirbys adventure if you've got even a passing interest in that series. those are just well designed games through and through

@chandler will do, i fucking hate playstation for not making enough games rn and taking down their JP studio. its like they thought ''lets not make as much games, lets see how low we can go''. yeah lmao i really like kirbys adventure forgot to bring that up
@imshitting420 yeah it's frankly fucking heretical that japan studio got shut down. team asobi has a lot of promise if astro's playroom is anything to go off, but they really need to make a proper, fully fledged game and get out of tech demo hell
