2021 favs

fav stuff i played this year! extra thoughts in notes <3

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
the actual game here that made me cry the most. perfectly builds on a literal decade's worth of story material imo
Nioh 2
Nioh 2
The 25th Ward: The Silver Case

NieR
NieR
on here just barely bc i have watched a playthrough before, but playing nier properly for the first time was so nice! still adore the cast & soundtrack, but what i really think is under appreciated is its atmosphere. one of surprisingly few game worlds that manage to feel genuinely summery and warm to me, very comfy!
Ninja Gaiden II
Ninja Gaiden II
Killer7
Killer7
well and truly artistically inspiring to me in every way, set a benchmark for cinematography in games that resonates with me so well, just a legit masterpiece all around, i love u suda
Ico
Ico
perfect "me" game, visually and tonally exactly what i love, and the kind of thing i wish i was creative and confident enough to make
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2
it really is just that good!! not the game on this list that made me cry the most but definitely the one that cut the deepest, a bizarre, heartbreaking, terrifyingly stark meditation on loss and grief that i wouldn't change a single thing about
Silent Hill
Silent Hill
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
pure pastoral bliss in old game form - i'm weirdly drawn to LADX's world and i'm not entirely sure why! it's just comfy, prairie and beach land >>>> generic nondescript zelda overworld fare any day
Alien Soldier
Alien Soldier
THE best action game i've played in forever - would seriously go right next to bayonetta on my list of genre favs
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Castlevania: Bloodlines
literally just the most fun classicvania by a WIDE margin imo, i had a blast with it
Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar Heroes
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Metroid II: Return of Samus
this one validated a lot of the thoughts i have about game design, in a way? it represents a lot of the weird artsy things i like in games taken to their logical extremes, finishing it was like a weird kind of confirmation that i'm not just posturing and overthinking things LOL, i found it incredibly engrossing all the way through and really would consider it a small masterpiece
