in the past

While in the middle of my Cult of the Lamb playthrough, my power went out for 4 hours. In that time, I had nothing to do except go on my phone but eventually it died. I remembered my 3DS was fully charged and so I decided to look through my DS/3DS games to see if I can be productive and replay something I hadn't in a while. Decided on the original New Super Mario Bros, since I hadn't played the series in years. After playing through the first world, my power came back on not long after. Decided to continue replaying this even with the power back on so here we are.

The New Super Mario Bros games were not games I ever truly loved. Yes, by the time 2 and U came out, the series became super stale. But even with DS and Wii, I never found them amazing at all. Replaying DS, this seems to still be true for me. In fact, this may be my least favorite of the bunch, at least next to 2 for several different reasons. Even despite that however, it's still a fun time overall and worth coming back to for a certain addition I'll talk about later.

First thing you'll notice when playing the game, would be its graphics. Personally, I always thought the NSMB games had a fine enough artstyle tho I much prefer how the sprite-based games looked in the past. DS though is sadly the ugliest in the series now. It was certainly a marvel back then but nowadays, just looks kinda ugly a lot of the time compared to the other titles.

Level design-wise, the game has plenty of levels that actually are pretty memorable. The sewers level, the giant wiggler level, the pipe maze level, the fucking brutal 8-1 level with the birds. I wish more of the levels were memorable like these, since a large chunk can be forgettable but I was surprised just how many I ended up remembering. This game also added the star coin collectable and honestly, they can be a tremendous pain in this game. They don't hide them behind invisible walls like future game but some of them require a powerup from other levels or toad houses and it can be frustrating. Same with the secret exits (which came back from Mario World). Like a third of those require the aforementioned outside powerup and they're a pain. I do recommend going for 100% tho cuz once you beat the game, you can actually buy bottom screen skins with any star coins you have and I never knew this and it's awesome. Such a great reward for going out of your way to get them.

One more aspect of the gameplay I wanted to get into were the powerups. 80% of the game you'll be seeing the fire flower which is a good powerup of course. The other 20%, you'll see the three new ones (and the classic star I guess) and I gotta say they're not that great. The mega mushroom is a great concept and is fun to use but is barely in any levels naturally. The mini mushroom is also not used that much and I honestly never liked much just because it's so floaty. And the shell is just obnoxious since you start moving on your own the moment you hit top speed and you have to manually stop to get out of your shell. I'm sure it's super fun when speed running but alas, it just annoyed me more than anything. This is another thing I think future games did better, especially WIi, that one has a great selection of powerups.

I really don't have much to say about the soundtrack. It's alright at best I think and it doesn't help the 1-1 theme gets reused in Wii. I did actually like the map theme for world 7 though, something about that feels so nostalgic. This game is somewhat nostalgic to me since I remember seeing a classmate play this on field trip bus ride when I was 8 and thinking it looked so cool. Never ended up playing the main campaign until after I played the other 3 NSMB games but my memory of that bus ride is engrained in my memory, and part of me thinks that classmate was on world 7 that day which might explain why the song feels so nostalgic. Either way, besides that one song I really like, never cared for the game's ost sadly.

This is all fine and dandy, but the real reason I think someone should come back to this one is its multiplayer modes. Minigames are a blast to play, even if most of them are ported straight from 64 DS, but there are a couple new ones which is nice. I probably played these more than the actual game back in the day. The Mario vs Luigi mode was also a lot of fun back in the day too. The goal was to get the most stars and you could steal them from the opposite Mario brother. Was just really fun constantly screwing the other person over. Though I guess since (most of) the minigames are in 64 DS and future games had multiplayer in it's campaigns, these aren't amazing reasons to come back to NSMB DS specifically, but it's still a nice little package of multiplayer goodness overall.

Like I said, was never a huge fan of the New Super Mario Bros games, and while this still rings true...I'd say this was still a fun time overall. Would be fun to replay them all but I'd have to spread them out considering how samey they are lol.

O último grande Super Mario 2D à moda antiga tinha sido o World, láááá no lançamento do Super Nintendo uns 15 anos antes.

nintendo really expects me to believe this is the "new" super mario bros when its 15 years old? what a scam

mario is actively trying to kill luigi on the cover

All my fellas know THIS was the prime past-bedtime banger. Ridiculously bouncy, sensorially satisfying and overall tremendously challenging while marching forth. I don't give a fawk it's getting buried by every newer title, it's a trendsetting masterstroke of joy and portable rejoice before that became everyday bread.

What was new became old. New Super Mario Bros was the first new 2D side-scrolling platformer in over 13 years after Super Mario Land 2's release. During that time, Nintendo experimented and released two 3D Mario games for the N64 and GameCube respectively, four remakes of the plumber's past adventures for the Game Boy Advance, and a plethora of spin-offs. Mario was given a ton of support around that time frame, but it was clear something was missing. So in May 2006, Nintendo released New Super Mario Bros to the world on Nintendo's most successful console, the Nintendo DS, trying to recapture the experience of his past 2D adventures while making a few changes to make it accessible to a wider audience, and I think it worked both critically and financially. It takes elements like an overworld and finding secrets (in the form of exits) like in Super Mario Bros. 3 and World and has some classic power-ups that remained unchanged like the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and the Star. It's clear that the game was a return to form for 2D Mario, and I think they did it well.

Let's get on to the "new" stuff, starting with the movement. Mario feels so good to control, and they brought moves from the 3D outings like a triple jump and wall jump, and it's so fun to pull off. The Star Coins are the main collectibles of the game, every level has three of them, and they have their own use. You can unlock Toad Houses and additional paths to new levels at the cost of five Star Coins. They're fun to collect, and while the series doesn't reward you with anything cool for completion, they do have their worth compared to something like the Dragon Coins in Super Mario World.

For the items, we have a few new ones. The Mini Mushroom makes Mario extremely tiny, making it easier to walk through small areas that couldn't be possible with normal-sized Mario, and he also has a high jump and can run on water, and the only way to get to Worlds 4 and 7. The Blue Shell (different from Mario Kart) grants the ability to shell dash by either ducking or dashing, decimating through enemies and blocks, but is vulnerable to bottomless pits, lava, and poison if the player is not attentive. I don't like this one; it feels like you're not in control of the shell most of the time and can accidentally trigger the shell dash and lead to deaths that weren't on purpose; I'm glad this one never appeared as a power-up again honestly. Lastly, we have the Mega Mushroom, the one that was featured on the box art and was advertised as this big power-up for the game (no pun intended), but in reality, it wasn't. The item was only implemented to a few levels, and what it essentially does is make Mario or Luigi grow big for a limited amount of time, decimating everything its path while earning some extra lives. I feel mixed on the new items overall, but what about the bosses? Of course, we have Bowser as the main bad guy, but Bowser Jr. is heavily involved in attempting to stop the Mario Bros from proceeding further. We battle him at the end of every tower level and the final castle with a showdown that takes a few seconds long if you have the Fire Flower equipped; very thrilling. The castle bosses are a mix of new and old enemies from past Mario games like Petey Piranha from Mario Sunshine and new ones like the Mummipokey, Cheepskipper, and Dry Bowser. Every boss goes down in three hits like usual, but at least there is some originality here which can't be said with the Koopalings in the following NSMB games. I think you all are starting to see the picture here; there's not enough stuff that can justify as "new" in New Super Mario Bros. When looking at this game from a 2023 perspective, it's a solid 2D platformer, but it comes off as generic, and that statement can be described for all of the NSMB games that came after, starting to feel repetitive and play it safe.

With that said, why do I rate this game a 4/5 then? Well, for two reasons, and both are outside the main game. First, Mario vs. Luigi mode. This is a mode where you and another person with a DS can play locally, select one of the two Mario Bros., and duke it out in a duel where whoever gets the maximum amount of stars wins. If you've not experienced this mode for yourself, I highly recommend it; it's fun just being an ass and steal stars from the other player, it's wonderful. The second reason, and the one thing that beats out every NSMB for me is the minigames. Returning from Mario 64 DS, these were my biggest time wasters growing up, trying to achieve high scores while trying to play every minigame possible as all of them are unlocked plus some new ones that are exclusive to this game. My favorite ones are easily the table minigames featuring Luigi; there's something so addicting about betting in-game coins and playing Picture Poker or Memory Match and witnessing my coin count go up every time I win. So, thank you Luigi for teaching kids how to gamble.

I enjoyed revisiting New Super Mario Bros. While it's generic and not as remembered fondly compared to the classic 2D Mario entries, it's still an enjoyable 6-hour adventure and it has its significance to the Mario series by being a solid return to form. I have a soft spot for this one, and after replaying the whole series in out of order in the span of a few years, the DS one remains the best, all because the others don't have a mode where we can gamble with Luigi.

free thinkers when the music goes “ba, ba”

I DEFINITELY spent more time on the mini-games than the actual game.

A fair bit better than I've probably been giving it credit for all these years. It's still aggressively bland from an aesthetic standpoint - just nothing interesting going on at all - but mechanically and as far as level and overall game design go, it's quite strong.

Upon starting it (especially if coming right off of previous Mario games, as I just have) the controls feel very slow and slippery, which is, of course, a necessity given the smaller view of the handheld and how much of the screen Mario now takes up. But if you stick with if for just a little while, you can quickly get dialed in and discover some of Mario's exciting new abilities, like the really good, chunky wall-jump. Another issue you have to retrain your brain on a bit is the hitboxes, which are always going to be worse with 3D models, especially low-count ones like these. But if anything, they're generous, with you being able to fully clip into Thwomps, etc. a little bit without them killing you. You just gotta go with it and trust the behind the scenes math - Nintendo's guys still know what they're doing better than anyone when it comes to platforming, and in the end, it all works just fine.

On top of some overall top-notch level design (which features a shift further into breaking each stage down into sequences of discrete challenges, reinforced by the offshoot feats needed to get each level's three big coins - a great addition, imo), I also really like the structure of the world maps. Along with the big coins, the more prevalent branching paths design folds a kind of minor collectathon aspect into Mario, evolving the exits from SUPER MARIO WORLD and expanding it into a meatier completion system. It's great! You can mainpath it to the end pretty quick even without warping if you want to, but you're not going to see nearly all of what the game has to offer if you do. I think this is one of the more rewarding Mario games to 100%. (I mean, not in terms of unlocking anything meaningful or whatever. Goodness, no.)

Aside from the beyond-boring look and sound, and little lamenesses like the nothing final boss and a couple too many autoscrollers (although they do each have unique spins on the idea, at least), the game is quite good and lives up the legacy of the series well enough. It may have begat a solid decade of dull retreads, but I guess I probably shouldn't let that skew how I feel about this one specifically.

Very fun portable Mario before the Wii version released. The main highlight was the multiplayer mode where you could play against a friend who would be Luigi, as well as the countless minigames

i finished this game in two sittings feeling very weird about it. It felt like I had just played it recently. Opened the game in Desmume and low and behold I had back in March. This game isn't bad by any means. I had a lot of fun with it even on an accidental second run. It's just really forgettable.

Nice to go back and play the original. Definitely don't like it as much as Wii due to design decisions (locking things behind having certain power-ups), but other than that, it's a short and sweet time.

I played the shit out of this game when I was like a toddler, but it kinda doesn't stand out in the grand scheme of things when it comes to the vast Mario catalogue. An enjoyable, but slightly forgettable experience.

You have no idea how much that spin you can do in mid-air in the later games messes with your muscle memory.

i find it funny that the mega mushroom was so heavily advertised (look at the cover) but nintendo could only find like 1 or 2 levels to put it in so to keep it relevant half of the toad houses are completely useless

this game taught me how to play poker

New Super Mario Bros.

The hardest thing about this game is trying to think of a single personality trait for it.

One-scoop-of-vanilla lookin' ass

I'm struggling to find the words to express my opinon on this game. To put it simply, this is the first game I've ever played and is something I've come back to over and over throughout my life. Needless to say, this game is important to me.

When I play this I see everything that makes Mario what it is. Everything here is amazing. While in some aspects, the gameplay can seem dated, I find it as just another part of the charm. Overall, this is an amazing platformer and tbh it's one of Mario's best games ever.

replayed this with a friend recently and mario vs luigi mode dont fuck around, one of the most intense matchs you can have fighting for your life

New Super Mario Bros. é chato. Pronto, falei.

Se bem me recordo a série NSMB fica bem melhor no Wii.

An extremely innovative game and my favourite in the new super Mario bros series. its full of so many new ideas, enemy's and levels that were never brought back for whatever reason.

this game gets a lot of flack for the new super mario series as a whole, and i can see why that might be - most people who spent a lot of time with this game probably did so fairly young, played the sequels and rarely came back to this one once wii became the standard, or both. and that's understandable; on surface level there's not a lot to discern the new super mario titles from eachother. but honestly, upon revisiting this one, i've got to say - if it's possible for a 2d mario to be underrated, this is the one.

new super mario bros. offers a lot in the way of originality in a series it would spawn where 'originality' is near bottom of the priority list. this game added three new power-ups to the mix, with mega and mini mushrooms acting similarly to some of mario 64's more gimmicky power-ups, and the blue shell just being a really fun gameplay addition in its own right. the ability to hop between worlds with the touch of a screen is good, as i know trekking level to level in super mario world without the star road could be a slog. i like that this game has alternative paths that extend even to the world visited, that offers a decent amount of exploration and curios to be unearthed. mario's control is really tight here - gone is world's spin jump but in its place comes ground pounds, wall jumps and double/triple jumps from 64, which are generally more versatile and welcome additions. the level diversity is surprising for a 2d mario; i like that the castles in this one feel more distinct, like the world 2 castle with the outside desert section, or world 3's spiked battering ram gimmick - the bosses are cool too, with petey piranha being a nice nod. it really feels like this game is a logical follow-up to mario world with elements of 64 and sunshine dashed in, like new block types and enemies. oh, and there's a really fun multiplayer mode and TONS of great minigames here, including the addictive card games. who doesn't want to play poker with a spiffily-dressed luigi, be honest?

this game might not quite reach the echelon of mario 3 or yoshi's island but i really do think the reputation of the new super series as a whole, understandably, has brought this game's reception down. go back and play it again! it's a little on the easy side but it's a ton of fun to revisit.

One of the first games I ever played. Holds up somewhat

I came back around to this after finishing New Super Mario Bros 2., and found this one to pretty lacking. It's frankly impressive how much of a difference just adding the incentive of coin collecting makes to a game's formula. This one on the other hand just felt like a standard Mario game. Perhaps the most baffling inclusion to this game is the Mega Mushroom (I presume it's called). There haven't been many instances I've found for it's use, aside from cheesing a fortress boss with it. Otherwise, levels are have too many gaps that prevent you from running straight and racking up those 1-UPs, not that you really need them, either. Still, it's fun to absolutely wreck shit on an early level and tear it apart, literally.

At the end of the day, it's Mario, just without anything that stands out.

Great return to form for Mario with fun if generic platforming levels. Also has some 2 player content and a minigame collection that honestly could have been it's own game. A fun experience for any Mario fan

Main Game: A fun but easy take on the classic Mario formula, vanilla but great music and invokes that Nintendo DS magic. Not half bad.

Multiplayer: Masterpiece.

can't say much, i came back to this game so i could just do a quick little speedrun for a fun n easy replay
blue shell is so sick, i love mario power ups focused on mobility
i also learned somehow after like nearly a decade that thwomps can't hurt you if you crouch into the shell
very nice 7/10
