masterful use of the visual novel media as a whole if only it werent for the fact that most of the time you're gonna look at either boring slice of life segments or sex scenes with an insurmountable amount of cum spilling out and over the top moans but that can also be said for the entire porn industry so who am I to judge (im a fan of creampies anyway so I won't complain too much but after like 5 sex scenes in the true route + loop segment I was going numb and im not even into this kind of stuff)

you and me and her is something that most people associate with ddlc so let's get that one out of the way this has NOTHING to do with ddlc apart from a miscellaneous of themes and the aptitude to break the 4th wall but while that game was more centered about the horror aspect this is more versed into the romance/denpa aspect of it like the things feeling a little bit off

as a visual novel it's pretty as fuck the ui is acceptable (no full controller support is a crime) but the true spotlight is the art style the 2 heroines look good as fuck either in their portraits that are super pretty and expressive or in the CGs with their pussies on your face

apart from that the sfx department is alright the overall vibe is that of a slice of life with horror twist so the ost isn't gonna go too fucking crazy but it's passable enough youre gonna listen to 3 happy tracks A LOT so have fun sure the voice acting is top notch but I'm pretty sure that's a staple for the japanese industry I've never heard a bad VA in jap if that's even possible and miyuki is definitely a highlight I loved her going slowly buck wild

so whatever you play as Male Insert which has obviously the most boring personality ever and is just going about in life in sadness and numbness until boom female heroines miyuki is the childhood friend trope the most popular girl of the class athletic intelligent and apparently perfect and then there's aoi who's autistic and full of shit and she thinks she's a VN character and calls god from time to time and she also likes cats and cum sorry who said that

this main trio is interesting and you're gonna see a lot of them interacting and befriending each other and shit but it's pretty evident after some time that the protagonist is just a vessel for the choices of the player theres nothing really remarkable about him apart from the fact that he's ugly as shit and has a huge cock because that's every single VN protagonist ever

mind you the girls are pretty fine they do lean on the stereotypes they're based on but do get some kind of nuance here and there and fun interactions sure this goes on for a LOT of fucking time (maybe I also am the problem since you COULD finish this game only playing miyuki route + true route but I decided to just do every single route because thats what you do in these kinds of VNs come on) and I'm not that huge of a fan of SoL moments in this but I guess they're fine to endure for the next part of the game

before going there I want to just talk about the side characters of this game because there ARE side characters

i have this weird relationship with yuutarou because he's literally my type of fictional character big dumb and loud so at first I was really horny for him and was like omg ok so are we gonna have a 3some with him buy after some time he really gets annoying and one note like the writers said ok this characters only personality is being a virgin and crying about it (me-core type character) and that's about it sure it gets into some bro even tho we're boys I love you etc etc ok then fuck me in the ass ? shock tiktok sfx he's cute as hell why did they do this to me

haru is terrible

SPOILER TERRITORY

after the true route which is basically the netorare route which is basically the aoi is actually a VN character who conveniently gets her "batteries ?" recharged with people dicking her TF down which is something pretty understandable if you ask me but then she goes out of her way to fuck haru ??? like you couldve fucked yuutarou and given me a porn CG of his dick for once so my thirst can be satiated but nooooooo let's just fuck the femboy crossdressing I'm so tired of this game

whatever miyuki goes wild he beats the crap out of everyone the visual novel reboots

the second act of the game e.g. the loop segment is definitely my favorite part of the entire vn and led me to actually boost the score of this one because that shit is fucking incredible

miyuki knows whats up she knows it's a vn and can actually change things here and there to make the main character fall in love with her she also knows there's a YOU behind the screen and sometimes will just break the 4th wall because why the fuck not

the fact that shes not that well versed into vns and you can see the UI of the new version of totono is disgustingly ugly is so fucking funny to me really drives home the absurdity of it and now no save option you're not going anywhere

so with chains on your legs and a predatory yandere girl abusing your dick any time she wants you're ready to lead your new life just doing some different memories segments (SoL datey stuff) and the main gimmick is making her angry disagreeing with her in every single decision so she goes fucking wild

I LOVE THIS PART it's so fucking nuts that this girl actually chained you in a loop and is in complete control of it all the events are in her hands and she can basically toy with you however she wants and what's really interesting is the fact that she will notice the passing of time or some repeated loops like the part where you buy a book like 8 times and each time she goes "what the hell are you gonna do with 8 books" and the character goes "huh" or that she will say "happy one month here" and the character goes "huh" whatever he's so fucking dumb at this point

so this aside as soon as she goes crazy she defies the VN once again and puts you in another loop with less options and your only way to get out is using her phone but it's locked with 10 safety question now this part made me cry because (as miyuki will also let you notice) it's randomly generated and walkthrough don't actually mean shit so you actually have to LISTEN to her something that people never do so why should I so after crying my eyes out you get to call God get out of the loop yada yada

shit happens and you gotta use the phone number to call aoi back and its like a super incredibly long number that needs you to do math like God's number minus the serial number of your version of the game plus the times you came into miyuki which is funny as hell

so whatever aoi back miyuki caught up to you boom choice do you want your autistic kitty girl or your abusive dominatrix girl there you go

both endings are fine but they're not the highlight of the game anyway miyuki one is like "well that happened" and they fuck and aoi instead is like "in the sea of limitless VNs im gonna be there with you again in the form of another big titty horny girl" which is also funny but I gotta say aois one made me some degree of emotional so kudos to you for making me care for characters that I thought were gonna bore me to fucking hell

so this is actually one of the best uses of the VN media ever but you're gonna go through a lot of senpai cum in me i want your babies fill me up with your dick your cock is so huge im gonna break etc etc sure it's gonna get a boxer out of you one time or 2 but I sure did get tired of these scenes ESPECIALLY with the miyuki one that makes YOU fuck with her since yeah forgot to mention the heroines at one point discard the main character as only a proxy of the player so they want to fuck the player now and yeah as soon as they get a chance they sure as hell will do that like the miyuki masturbating scene where she pretends she's getting fucked by the player is insane and goes on for so fucking long I just started browsing rule34 for something ACTUALLY related to my tastes

so all in all nice VN it couldve went into subahibi directions but I'm glad it stayed into its lane and just delivered a romance story with an edge on insanity and 4th wall breaking some people are gonna say this is the second coming of christ but I can confidently say that at least its a cool installment to the overall genre defying expectations and traditions and shit

yuutarou can you show me your dick im going crazy

I LOVE DENPA!!!! I LOVE DENPA!!!! I!! LOVE!!! DENPA!!!!

This'll stick with me for a while. Must say it's the first time I've ever been sexually assaulted by a video game.

This was definitively an experience. I do love all the fourth wall stuff and using the "meta of the VN" to tell a story about (maybe) true love. I don't really like any of the girls that much but I had a very fun time reading all this crazy story.

A piece of fiction with a central theme that most of everything ties into, and exhausts almost all dimensions of its medium to explore. The theme is that of Commitment and Regret and the way it explores this is through an eroge VN. That said, this game is dripping with so much empathy and emotion while being designed to be engaged with from the single perspective of YOU playing it. Spoiling or divulging anything would be a disservice to it.
Play the JAST USA version or the Director's Cut patched Steam version. Everything in this game is made with a purpose that feeds back into itself, so cutting anything down or out is unimaginable and just isn't the same experience.

i played this primarily because i had played DDLC on a whim, heard it mentioned, and yet again am a sucker for metafiction. i obviously won't go into the plot more than general strokes here, but Aoi's extremely, extremely endearing and i liked most of the slice-of-life stuff because of her. i liked a lot of it, and although the very very end felt mastrubatory, the majority of the last act was fucking insane, disorientating, and horrific.

oh, and for the record - most of the sex scenes made me crack up. however, for the purposes of getting the fullest experience out of the ending, i gotta suggest getting the patch if you get it off steam

a beautifully complex game. really took visual novels to another level

unique game to remember forever

haven't played this but i'm watching a playthrough of it.

this seems like a Beat Visual Novel. Allen Ginsberg posessing a japanese romance VN n shredding into self-aware anomalous objects.

For this one to work, you really have to have a lotttttt of VNs under your belt. This one is for the mega degen fans.
The story tries to soften constant 4th wall breaking by introducing an actual in-universe "video game" and blurring the lines built there- but... It's so corny. Both love interests are so 1-note and icky. Crazy Tsundere or the Sexy Pervert Kitty Robot. Pick your poison.

I understand that including a Tsundere type is kind of necessary for a story like this to work, but I really don't think she EARNED the redemption by the end. Choosing Aoi doesn't feel good either. She doesn't fit in. She's mentally innocent and alien by design. They are both UNHEALTHY AND TERRIBLE OPTIONS.

I found the game way more interesting before the big twist.
Once you get there, it's like "ah, this is what we're doing now. Okay." Time's up on developing the cast. What goes on this point forward is all "what-if" glitch-y timeloop interactions.
They try to sell this "friendship triangle!!!" between the 3 titular you's me's and her's but at no point is it believable or worth salvaging.

Going back to my opening statement, the game's characters are pretty run-of-the-mill and don't try to stand out. (Their interests and backstory are LITERALLY randomized per playthrough.) It's all for the meta purpose of selling a "just another love triangle visual novel!" to make the twist hit that much harder. Going all-in on the twist with a build up this small feels a bit... cheap.

When the plot isn't moving, you're learning basic trivia (or raising your "bond") during boring dates in a timeloop. I don't want to call it "padding" because I truly do not believe it was created this way to stretch longer playtime. If anything- it's a lack of respect towards the player, knowing that if you're this far in, we can throw whatever we want at you. It goes to some pretty funny extremes. Then the joke is done and you're left wanting to move on already.

There are quite a bit of secrets and easter eggs to find online which could please anyone. Yes, the secret scenes and following specific steps to enter secret codes stuff IS COOL, but it doesn't really fix any of the core icks I have towards the overall experience.

Great art, music is really solid. Voice acting adds a lot to it.
There's some neat timeloop ideas and dialog events that appear when picking different options, but that's really doing the bare minimum for this type of story.

Maybe play this when you've already read them all and nothing excites you anymore. This is certainly "different."

goodbye, aoi.

The blueprint to DDLC. Does it all better too.

The art is absolutely stunning but I found myself thoroughly unable to get invested in any of the characters, which is unfortunate given most of the impact of the VN rests upon you being attached to them

interesting ideas, they had something going, but it didn't do much for me. really didn't get invested enough for it to land

eroge writers will create a masterpiece just to fill it with all their fetishes and yet reading it will permanently alter your brain and stay with you for the rest of your life

The comparison to Doki Doki is tacky and overdone considering this predates it by about 4 years, but unavoidable.
When I played DDLC in 2017 I heard the ~whispers~ of this ~other game~ that ~wasn't officially translated at the time~. I saw some screenshots from a certain happy birthday, and moved on with life.

Now 6.5 years later with more VNs under my belt, more life lived, and with memories hazy enough to have not quite remembered being spoiled fully, I rounded back onto reading Totono.

It was certainly an experience worth that wait, and a great of example of using the meta of your genre to tell an extremely effective story. Totono builds its main heroines wonderfully over the course of normal play, making the choice between them feel hard to make even before the curtain begins to get pulled back. Being railroaded into Miyuki naturally makes you feel bad for Aoi, which leads you into her route, which leads to abandoning Miyuki's, which leads to everything falling apart as it does. Despite me pushing in Aoi's direction as hard as possible as soon as I had the ability, they still brought me back to almost picking Miyuki in the end. The emphasis placed on your choice really did make it hard to make in a wonderful way, no saves, no reloads, just a binary with no right answer capping off an extremely memorable commentary on the genre.

Totono fans explain why their VN is good without mentioning DDLC challenge

"I might be into cuck porn, but unlike you peasants I'm not a DDLC fan!"

Changed my view on video games as a whole, was my favorite game for many years until I played persona.

Meeeeeeeeeeu amigo...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

the best visual novel of all time? maybe not, but how this game includes the player (literally YOU. yourself.) is mind blowing.

totone is a video game based on a love triangle, with multiple, multiple irrelevant endings.

the way the game is designed, is to mostly end up in the end either not dating either of them or to be dating miyuki, who is the black haired character.

the other person involved in the love triangle, aoi, is potrayed as a weirdo from the very beginning. shes the weird girl, completely delusional and still involved in childish roleplaying, referred to as chuunibyou. her chuunibyou fantasy involves herself believing she lives in a game world, where she is just a character. she has literally no social skills and no self awareness over her appearance either.

to cut the review short and to the point, the game also contains super super r18 sexual scenes. though these are optional, unfortunately, they are very important to the plot. not because the player is meant to enjoy them (most weirdos who enjoy visual novels will enjoy them anyway), but it shows the lengths YOU as a player went to date the weird girl over miyuki.

to explain, the only way to not end the game in an ending where you are with miyuki, and instead with aoi, you as a player must make super fucked up decisions. like, super fucked up.

to summarize the worst, ending up with aoi involves CUCKING yourself by watching her fuck other dudes, literally eating their cum out of her, being turned on by that, and having your own turn.

though this was not fun to watch, its purposely an event you must choose to go through to show the extent you would go to not date miyuki (who, by the way, is the perfect, sporty, good looking popular girl in the game) and rather choose aoi (never seen a hair comb in her life, zero social skills, no friends etc.).

this is where the REAL plot of the game starts. as you have probably played through and ended up with miyukis endings multiple times, as hers are more likely and rational to get, you've had multiple times where you've "promised" to miyuki to always love her. again, this just happens at the end of playthroughs, and every playthrough is a fresh start.

however the plot point is that once you manage to somehow end up with aoi with your fucked up decisions, miyuki confronts you over it. not just the character you are playing, but YOU as a player. from this point on, miyuki becomes a terrifying character, does terrible things (animal abuse and murder etc). she is seemingly conscious that she is in the visual novel that YOU, the player, are playing, and she is also aware she is just a character in a video game.

its a lot better in the game than explained, but the fourth wall breaking is incredible. afaik, there is no media that involves the player themselves as a plot point like totone. i wouldn't consider DDLC one because it is more of a clone of this game. its a pretty cool concept and if you can get past the hard-to-watch r18 scenes, you'll be surpised at how cool this game as a concept is.

i also loved that when i finished the game, i realized, the title of the game: You and Me and Her, refers to me (miyuki), her (aoi), and you being YOU, not the character/protagonist (shinichi) that you play as in the game.
