30 Day Video Game Music Challenge [2022]

I gotta admit guys… I have NOT played a lot of games, and on top of that, I have not played a lot of games with good music. A lot of the games I play don’t have any music at all! But, I thought this could be fun to do once a year to see how much my gaming world opens up over the upcoming years.

Following this: https://imgur.com/aGSVjXC

Day 1: Title Screen Music
"Main Title Theme: Dearly Beloved"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO3Xvg08M-0
I hate this game with an insane passion, but I gotta admit a winner when I see one, and KHII was able to amp up the already gorgeous main title theme to the original game.
Day 2: Opening Level Music
“Pollyanna”
https://youtu.be/XoSBRcQwocE

The song used to represent the whole of the Mother series is actually the first song you hear when you go off to adventure as Ninten in Mother 1. Definitely a song very close to my heart.
Day 3: 8-Bit Music
“Unbreakable Determination (Stage 4-2)”
https://youtu.be/qv0TSofXC1w

Peppy good background music for a NES platform hack-and-slash. Works well with the technology they had while still being one of the few 8-bit console songs I could genuinely listen to in my free time.
Day 4: Game from a Console Exclusive Series
“The Forest of Hope”
https://youtu.be/jc3gs7OJ0Jc

Ahh, I can imagine their little screams so clearly. I don’t really know if this day is supposed to be for games that never got ported to a future console or what-not, but eh, whatever. It’s Pikmin. Was originally released for Gamecube only.
Day 5: Overworld music
“Dark World”
https://youtu.be/sslj06K-Nlw

I remember seeing Link transfer over to the Dark World and knew the second the music hit I was in a world of trouble. Hard to find a game that so perfectly fit a newly revealed atmosphere, while still having that classic video game chiptune sound.
Day 6: Music that Makes you Feel Relaxed
“The Moon and the Prince”
https://youtu.be/pUJeiEva0Hw

Honestly, any song in this game would do, but I picked my favorite from the set.
Day 7: Music from an Indie Game
“Clip Joint Calamity”
https://youtu.be/RRCiA55yZe0

Don’t really have much to say except I like this song lmao.
Day 8: Music from a Shooter
“At Doom’s Gate”
https://youtu.be/BSsfjHCFosw

I’ve only played this and Splatoon as my shooters, and I’m sure as hell not putting Splatoon on here (sorry).
Day 9: Music from a Licensed Game
“Moon Theme”
https://youtu.be/KF32DRg9opA

Hey, I’m the annoying retro person. You should have seen this answer from a MILE away.
Day 10: RPG Battle Music
“Mass Destruction”
https://youtu.be/6jFaoLrLzd4

I wasssss going to put “Child Abuse” from Persona 1, but that felt like bad taste. Take this instead.
Day 11: Puzzle Game Music
“Professor Layton’s Theme”
https://youtu.be/gDgDi7c-N3g

Well, every puzzle has an answer.
Day 12: Music that Makes you Sad
“Morphogenetic Sorrow”
https://youtu.be/f7WHvJzJpPY

The song that plays when suddenly everything makes A LOT more sense and gets a whole lot sadder.
Day 13: Music you Like from a Game you Don’t Like
“Heartbeat, Heartbreak”
https://youtu.be/P3ue1JPFXEU

I’ll keep it short because while Persona 4 makes me super angry, I know it’s also very special to a lot of my friends. Persona 4 is filled with great music that works great either in game or just to listen to on your phone.
Day 14: Music featuring Vocals
“Knights of the Holy Spear”
https://youtu.be/3-H7p_tvznQ

Backloggd always seems to have the messed up American version of games, lmao. Anyways, the original PSX version of the song has church choir chanting, which I’m going to say counts.
Day 15: Boss Battle Music
“Boss Theme”
https://youtu.be/L55nDF9c_M0

Yo, why’s this game where you beat up piles of poop have such banger music.
Day 16: 16-Bit Music
“Beware the Forest Mushrooms”
https://youtu.be/iudB3TreJfM

This is objectively the only correct answer. No, I will not debate this.
Day 17: Music you Never get Tired of
“Main Theme”
https://youtu.be/RUN6Kqd9xgs

This one is difficult, as you don’t want to pick something too complicated that you know you’d easily tired from it, nor something so boring you would easily forget it. Risk of Rain 2’s music perfectly fits that in between, with the title theme always getting me properly pumped for a game even if I wasn’t really feeling it earlier.
Day 18: Music in a Game released the Year you were Born
“Gerudo Valley”
https://youtu.be/SFwEa56SXSo

Sorry for another Zelda boys, but man, remember when Zelda was arguably as well known for their music as their gameplay?
Day 19: Cover of Music by a Different Artist
“Clair de Lune”
https://youtu.be/KBKYw1P2LxU

Literally the only one I could think of and also the like one good thing about this game.
Day 20: Music from a Racing Game
“Junkie XL”
https://youtu.be/9rZ9X_QvIlQ

Burnout Revenge is the only racing game I’ve ever played, so this was an easy pick for me.
Day 21: Music you Associate with Frustration
“Drowning Song”
https://youtu.be/9Yw5jkAHgME

A mix of both fear and frustration that we all know too well.
Day 22: Town/Village Music
“Corridors of Time”
https://youtu.be/BXo3DrXHY8w

One of the few town themes where I stopped playing just so I could sit and listen to the music.
Day 23: Underrated Music
“Zot Themes”
https://youtu.be/KCOuwnGRc3k

Yeah, okay, it sucks, I know. But! It’s very much underrated because this is one of the very few Atari 2600 games able to have music during gameplay, and honestly it could have been much worse.
Day 24: Music you Constantly Have Stuck in your Head
“Mooselini’s Car Rap”
https://youtu.be/Bip3hXS5zJE

If someone answers with something else for Day 24, just know they are lying.
Day 25: Music that gets you Pumped
“Cornered”
https://youtu.be/UxnvGDK0WGM

Not only is the song a banger, but it sounds really fucking good to hear it
when you finally present the right piece of evidence.
Day 26: Music you Like from a Game you haven’t Played
“Beginning”
https://youtu.be/ptgaCJSF7j8

I knew the Famicom had better sound than the NES but holy SHIT.
Day 27: Music from a Handheld Game
“Kasimir Ruins”
https://youtu.be/v1mK7rqrh1Y

Did not know handheld game music could get this insane until my wife started making her own list and showed me this.
Day 28: Music that Makes you Feel Nostalgic
“4PM”
https://youtu.be/qWOw4cZ2f7c

I pretty much only had time to play Wild World after elementary school in between my time getting home and having dinner. 4PM as a result was the song I knew the best, and honestly, didn’t know the songs changed per hour until I was a late teen.
Day 29: Final Boss Music
“Megalovania”
https://youtu.be/wDgQdr8ZkTw

Come on, this song fucks and you know it.
Day 30: Credits Music
“Credits”
https://youtu.be/mIj-4aZMOk0

I give up. Also this is one of few games I’ve played with an actual unique ending credits song rather than just replaying the title theme again. Hey, hey, I agree it’s not great, but it’s also not THAT bad. Come on, you read the description of this list. You knew what you were getting into.
