Astro’s Playroom is a wonderful experience that leaves me with far more complicated emotions than something so straightforwardly joyful really would ever want me to. It celebrates everything about Sony’s past, showering you with artifacts that lovingly render hardware ephemera in 4K glory, grounds itself in the present walking you through the innards of your new device and showing off the capabilities of the DualSense, and has no vision of the future. Jumping and moving through the levels is serviceable, and the adaptive triggers and HD rumble feel great and are used great.

The references and cosplays in this get to pretty deep cuts (I gasped at the Jumping Flash fella, then was knocked flat by the Vib Ribbon bunny, and I’m still confident I hallucinated a fucking Siren reference), and it’s delightful to see all of Sony’s back catalog get their due like this. It’s been four years and there are exactly thirteen PS5 console exclusives that could be added to a sequel - five of which have not released yet*. Nine are in established franchises, and over half are sequels or remakes. Seven are rated M for Mature, four are rated T for Teen, and two are so early in development they haven’t been rated by the ESRB. Astro’s Playroom is one of, generously, three games on this list that somebody under the age of twelve would be expected to have any fun at all with, and frankly I think 90% of the appeal would go over their heads given what a nostalgia trip this is.

The PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 are all of a certain type of utopian thinking that died with Web 1.0. Technology and art were synthesized into something for everybody, from children to adults, inventing new design grammar as they went along to create experiences that no medium could ever replicate. Sony developed, funded, and promoted scores of games that aimed at every conceivable demographic and, frequently, aimed at no demographic, believing that pushing the medium forward and creating wholly unique kinds of games creates the kind of brand identity that builds real loyalty.

Games have grown up since then, and they make games for grown-ups now, with such large budgets that true experimentation is quite difficult to justify (unless you have Hideo Kojima-sized star power and trailer editing). This one, especially, is still trying to be in the lineage of what came before, offering a utopian look into the World of PlayStation, but there is that key difference; before, each console offered a glimpse of the future, a foundation for a better tomorrow. Astro’s Playroom tries to show a utopia, but can only really believe that we already experienced it, have seen what it could offer, and have moved on towards greyer horizons.

I hate Blizzard, with their blatant shady practices and false promises, but it would be disingenuous to say it’s a bad game. I still have a lot of fun with it, and although it comes with all the problems of being a competitive shooter, I’m going to continue playing it and enjoying it.

Some of the slickest art and graphical design and one of the best soundtracks of all time with writing that I sadly think doesn't completely match up to the reputation of what came before it. All 3 stories start off about as strong as The Silver Case does but the only one which really keeps it up all the way through is Placebo, which is some of the best stuff in Kill The Past and justifies the entire work.

I think Correctness's individual parts are very good, chapters 2 and 3 in particular, but I don't know how much I like it as a unifying story. The Kurumizawa stuff is amazing but feels almost underwritten compared to the far less interesting Kosaka scenes which felt like they were there to over-explain what was happening in chapter 5 especially.

It's the Matchmaker story that bumps this down to something lower than it probably deserves though. First two chapters are amazing until it slides down the yakuza plot line for two chapters which is the first time in any of these games I felt like I could predict every single thing that was going to happen next. It ends well enough but what started as a funny dark parallel story to Correctness which enhanced both stories ends up fairly tedious and damaging to the other stories it's supposed to help prop up.

Placebo really is excellent though, Tokio's chapters in The Silver Case are some of my favorite writing in any game and I'm glad to say they don't drop the ball here. In particular chapters 3 and 5 are so pitch perfect and quietly devastating that it's almost enough for me to look past my issues with the other stories.

I think in the end what has me prefer TSC far above this is mainly personal taste. I loved TSC because it was simultaneously a horrifying nightmare paranoia world that was incredibly human. The cast was all memorable and the way their stories came to truly violent ends by the end sat with me strongly. There's really no such interesting character dynamics here. There's no Kusabi type to center everything. Kuro is a hell of a lot of fun but she doesn't have much to do post chapter 2, and Tsuki and Osato's dynamic also pretty handily peaks at chapter 2 for me. I do think this distance is a deliberate choice but it's one which I feel doesn't fully resonate with me, especially at the ends of these stories where they try to have moments where it feels we really should care about the relationship between the cast.

Still, it's Kill the Past, it's still unlike anything else that I can think and even if I don't think it fully lives up to its predecessor, very few things can.

"Alan Wake 2 is a game that shows what videogames are capable of"

Well, I imagine that a large number of people, when reading this highlighted phrase, will imagine a game that demonstrates cutting-edge technology, photo-realistic visuals, or even surprising performance. But definitely not the case where I wanted to refer to that kind of thing.

Alan Wake 2 tries to push the limits of what is possible to present and (only) achieve through a game. Using different multimedia formats to convey a plot, whether through meta commentary, live action cinematic cutscenes, different forms of interaction in the environment and fourth wall breaks, may not be a new thing. But it is certainly the game that comes closest to what was idealized by Sam Lake throughout his career, by playing with these elements in a coherent way, and delivering an experience that is unlike ANY other game I have seen playing videogames for more than 20 years.

And speaking of which, I believe that the most important thing in a game is the experience it gives you, and without a doubt, Alan Wake 2 is a game that cannot be explained. I could say that it is one of the best survival horror titles of recent decades, going head to head with classics like Silent Hill 2 or the original Resident Evil, or I could even say that it has one of the best and most ingenious plots and ways of tell a story that you can find in any medium. But it doesn't make sense, nothing I can say could do him justice.

Alan Wake 2 is a game that needs to be experienced above all else, and I hope everyone can give it a chance someday.

Game of the year.

This is kind of hard to explain, but around the time I played Control, I was really craving a new Resident Evil game. I didn't feel like replaying any of the ones I knew, and none of the others called to me, so I was left with this weird itch. Control, oddly enough, scratched it somewhat. Whatever my brain was craving from Resident Evil, Control delivered on it. So when Alan Wake II was then announced as a full survival horror game, I was immediately invested. It was a Game For Me.

I didn't love Alan Wake, the first. The combat felt clunky and most of the characters annoyed me, but there was enough Remedy DNA to pull me through. This sequel completely fixes all of that.

The gameplay loop of this is so intriguing, and far from what I had expected. It took me maybe two hours before my first combat encounter, because there's so much to this game beyond fighting Taken. I loved uncovering clues and solving riddles with Saga, and then developing and uncovering a story with Alan. The combat is much tighter and more focused, opting for smaller, more intermittent encounters that better suit the game's style. And many encounters are ones you can simply ignore and run through if you're low on resources or patience.

The story and atmosphere of this game is where it completely blows every other game this year out of the water for me. It's engaging, mind-bending and told with such style and flair that I was chomping at the bit for more.

I also have to shout-out the sound design of this game, which isn't something I'm too knowledgeable about or ever pay much attention to in games. But this game was consistently terrifying me because of the sound design. Little stings and ambient noises had me whipping my flashlight around trying to figure out what's lurking in the shadows. It's brilliant.

This feels like more than a game. It's a movie. It's a novel. It's a musical. It's an interactive multimedia experience. It's the most Remedy game that Remedy ever Remedied. It seems as if the technology or the team's skills and confidence, or maybe some combination, are finally catching up with their creative vision, and I hope they keep at it.

It is the ritual that will lead them on.

Ambientação delicinha, ost's só o filé, bosses incríveis, segredos, arminhas com mecânicas surreais e com toda certeza vai te prender por uns bons dias ou semanas...ou meses...

Just think: in 14 years we'll all start dressing like soma cruz. I personally welcome fur coats, turtlenecks, and bell bottoms getting back in style.
