Demon by Night

For those who don't know, fun fact about me: I'm a coward! Like, a HUGE fucking coward, I have the heart of a squirrel, I get scared at the literal tamest shit.

As such, and as I have said in several occasions, my relationship with horror media has been extremely limited, and that includes, of course, videogames. But I REALLY want that to change, some of the most incredible pieces of gaming fall into this genre, and I really want to experience them to the end. And so, take this list as a kind of priority backlogg for games that fall in this genre. This doesn't mean that I'll play it sooner, but it serves as a personal remaining that I should sit my ass, play games and shit my pants.

Also, recommendations are always welcomed, but keep in mind I'm a newbie. Soooooooooo yeah, these are (in no particular order of preference) the spooky games I really want to play:

I have danced with RE before, and let me tell you, it danced too fucking well for me. Horrifying and captivating, I ended up dropping it, but be assured, I'll be back. I'll escape that accursed mansion.
Once, again, I played and dropped it 'cause I got too scared, but C'MON I HAVE TO SAVE THE DOGGY. This game seems tailor made for making me scared, and you know what? It shall be time for me to face the music, or in this case, my nightmares.
SOMA caught my attention from the very first moment. It really blew up back in the day and it seems like such a unique game in general. It'll probably take a while before I play it, but I'll try do it!
Oh, a horror game in space? Where the premise is that one unbeatable alien follows you across the entire game???? OH JOY
Ah yes, the most horrifying experience of all.

Working at a big corporation.

(I'll probably re-use this joke for my review when the time comes)
Ah sweet, man-made horrors beyond my comprehension. I basically know nothing about this one and I believe that will make it even better. I'm ready for the dark in the woods.
I've actually already beaten the first three nights a year ago while in a call with a buddy, only the last two remain. Gee, I sure hope there's no any other nights or something like that!
Listen, I'm just curious about pixel-horror games, Inmost was kino and they look neat.
Do I even have to say something? This entry counts as any Silent Hill, I believe 2 was just the most representative, but I still don't know where to start. And just... these games are going to break me, aren't they?
After talking in the Discord about this game I'm so fucking scared even tho I still don't know what to expect.
You know, just for the funny.
The developer of this later did Too Human. How could I not play it?
Cute + Horror always results in absolute trauma. And that's a fact.
Evil? EEEEVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL!
Taking pictures of ghost is such an original concept and I'm excited to play it... and terrified. I'm always terrified when it concerns horror games.
I barely know what this is.

Yet I already feel dread.
Ah sweet, I love seeing in only two colors. This looks fantastic yet horrifying, and I'm all here for it.
The ''Smiledog.jpg'' creepypasta thing 'caused irreparable trauma to my 9 year old self and it looks like that this game is going to rekindle that primal fear
The Game better known for what It spawned rather for what it is...hope that isn't because is bad...

I don't scare easily. The Five Nights games can get me to jump but the way they do so is cheap, and I think there's a difference between genuine fear and being startled by something. The only game on this list that I think manages to get under my skin is Silent Hill, just a very eerie game thaBOO!

Eternal Darkness definitely gets a recommendation from me, very pulpy and exaggerated storybook horror experience that's almost like a sandbox until they take away your toys and subject you to the sanity effects. Also I'll second Weatherby here, the original Silent Hill is a must play.

Just a little tip, if you play garten of banban make sure you pirate it and play it with someone else, i can not even imagine how miserable playing it alone must feel like.

If you want a reccomendation, ill never stop suggesting Yomawari Midnight Shadows. Really, really good game and very scary, i think itd be good to play for a beginner too! (:

@Weatherby Hah! Nice try, but you'll have to try it better than that if you want-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! The ''boo'' is in bold letters?! You actual maniac, you want to give me a heart attack?!

@Drax Oh yeah Eternal Darkness! I've actually considered playing it multiple times but I kinda just forgot about it, I'll add it so it doesn't happen again!

And yeah, I'll follow both your recommendations and I’ll start with the firs SH game in the series, 'cause what better place to begin that with... well, the beginning.

@moschidae I mean, considering the first chapter is free pirating it would be redundant, tho funny, not gonna lie... And yeah, I'd play it with another person, 'cause playing it alone seems like a torture of some kind.

And oh my god thank you so much for reminding me of Yomawari Midnight Shadows! I discovered thanks to a NitroRad video some years ago and it looked really interesting. To the list it goes!

that's for not saying hi to me in the discord, ffffuckerrrrr

@Weatherby I literally saw you sharing your reviews but didn't process that you joined, I'm dumb as bricks. Anyways, glad you ended up joining and hey, you know what? That's a fair payback not gonna lie

@moschidae - Digital handshake for recommending a Yomawari game. Also would recommend the other Yomawari games too for their interesting emotional stories and overall good horror atmospheres.

The Fatal Frame series also gets my recommendation too. If you like Asian Horror movies, these games are great for those vibes. Maiden of Black Water is the least scariest of in the series, but it's still an enjoyable one for beginners to the series.

The Evil Within 1 has got some crazy stuff going on there, but the horror atmosphere is great.

Infliction for the obscure horror title. The game freaked me out more than I'd expected.

No problem!! I love midnight shadows sooo much, its such a shame how underground it is... close to being one of my favorite games in general

I wont lie these banban games kinda blend together lol, i forgot the first one was free... if youre gonna play em i would just go through the other two, especially since the first one is such a wet fart of a gaming experience. I hope whoever you play it with finds it as funny as i did watching hilda suffer through it tho :P

@sleeping0dragon All three of those recommendations are going in for sure, I've always wanted to try both The Evil Within and the Fatal Frame series, and Infliction look interesting, and by proxy probably terrifying. Thank you so much!

@curse the excitement meters have now gone past the roof. I'll keep things as they are and go in knowing virtually NOTHING, but it looks like it will be a fantastic and horrific game, and I really hope I like it (and that I don't drop it out of terror xD)

If you're taking recommendations, try Nix Umbra! I don't play too many horror games, but I thought it was super cool. The vibes are immaculate.

Also hell yeah I've been meaning to try out Yomawari.

The Alone in the Dark reboot is coming this year, you should consider that even facetiously so I can have hope that it'll be really good. You could play the original games if you want that big slice of history at the expense of your sanity but you wouldn't be missing a whole lot, most of them kinda suck hehe
Who's Lila is a pretty interesting indie one too, more uncanny and creepy than scary but it's worth looking at for the idea at least. I am terminally not able to be scared by anything so I'm going to inhale everything on this list that I haven't played yet and pray for your safety

@pickleSteven On visuals alone, it looks straight up from the worst nightmare possible, and it's so unique for it. Can't believe I didn't heard of this one before, I'll play it for sure, it looks so good, thank you!

@hilda I've always wanted to try the Alone in the Dark series but never knew where to start, but if the reboot turns out to be good that may be a really good place to begin with. Who's Lila seems to do the ''smile horror'' thing that makes me shiver out of pure terror... it goes in for sure. I must face my fears, even if I cry like a puppy while doing it. And thanks for your prayers, I'll need them xD, and I'm glad that you found some cool games through this list to play! :D

Some people count Bloodborne as a horror game and it is pretty spooky so that, otherwise er RE7 or RE2 Remake I guess

If you do ever decide to play the alone in the dark games pre reboot just start from 1! And if you don't like it give up cause they're all pretty much the same, unless you really enjoy being shot to fuckin pieces in the middle of a hedge maze lol
4 is pretty alright tho, the easiest to go back to at least

If you have a way of playing it, then I'd recommend Haunting Ground, and if you like it, then also try the Clock Tower games. If you want to have some laughs, then go for Illbleed and Michigan: Report from Hell.

@NOWITSREYNTIME17 huh, Bloodborne does have a ton of horror elements, and you know what? Every excuse to finally play Bloodborne is a good one! I'll add it in.

@MobileSpider Clock Tower is one of the few horror series I'm actually familiarized with, but I never heard of Haunting Ground and It looks REALLY promising. I won't add the other two to this list since I don't wanna add too many funny-bad-horror games, but I'll keep them in my radar, you know, for the funny xD. Thank you for the recommendations!

@hilda and @curse then it's decided, I'll start with the first one! It will take me a while before I play it, but O really hope I end up licking it, even if the rest of the series is... Not good.

In Sound Mind.

It's not pure horror but it is very unsettling. I played and enjoyed it last year.

Definitely recommend Detention and Devotion from Red Candle Games, among my favorites

Also @FallenGrace I’ve surprisingly never heard of In Sound Mind, gonna check that out too

@FallenGrace I actually have that game, EG Store gave it AWAY for free a while ago, but I didn't know it had horror elements. Yo the list it goes and now I'll go into it preparing myself for the spooky, so thank you! XD

@Lead Never Heard of seen this one, but It looks promising. Thank you!

*never heard or seen those ones.

The first horror game I found myself actually enjoying was Phasmophobia, because the complete lack of scripted encounters means no jump scares and the co-op helps alleviate things if you can rope some friends into it. No story to it, so it's completely safe to skip if that's what you're looking for, but if you're just looking for a good time in the horror genre then it's worth a shot

@DemonAndGames Obviously I'm scared of Ecco as mentioned in the server but out of all of these, watch out for Alien Isolation. Really good game but when it gets rolling, it might be the most actively scary out of all of them.

@jobosno Phasmaphobia is one of the few multiplayer-horror games that looks like it is really scary, generally being with other people can mitigate or eliminate the fear, but everything I've seen from Phasmaphobia looks really good an potentially terrifying. I'll add it right now, thank you!

@appreciations Oh I know, I remember watching some videos and gameplay of it back when it release and.... yeah, looks like I'm in for a... ''spooky'' time, to say the least...
