If you want to dunk on Mass Effect twice, Andromeda might fit the theme here.

spore, star fox zero, metal gear solid v

It's actually possible to play FF XIV 1.0 by creating a private server. Neat for curiosty sake, nothing more.

Probably Kingdom Hearts III depending on who you ask.
@mediocreampuf not Chandler since he loves 3

does sonic 06 count technically

not even a serious suggestion, just a thought experiment
@Drawdler I think it would cause I've heard people were excited for Sonic 06 in forums and pre-release reception was apparently positive

i still love the bounty hunter theme from advent rising

The Day Before might fit the criteria, although some people saw early red flags, I heard that the game was highly anticipated overall. That's just second hand information though so I'll leave it at your discretion

Would MGSV count? Overhyped to hell and back in official marketing and 9 years later even diehard shooters for it will admit it underdelivered.

@huss good call on anthem. mass effect andromeda already has a ton of skepticism surrounding it, however. same goes for thief 2014. and nobody really bought into the haze 'halo killer' shit at any point - that was all just marketing

@dizzy see above

@dishy @miramiraotw spore and mgsv for sure. any additional context on sfz? i've never been locked-in enough on the series to notice much of any fanfare for it. seems more like a federation force scenario to me at a glimpse

@mediocreampuf debatable due to the lack of critical mode at launch, but since it was always a promised feature in the works and the game itself delivered exactly what was promised, i'm gonna say no. fair weather kh fans are just stupid

@drawdler @callsonicspeed 100%. 06 was definitely anticipated and actually played worse at launch than its pre-release demo. so it was a major whiplash on release

@hello8964 ngl that game looks cool as hell in general i just got it recently myself lmao

@xelith no that was just a scam. nobody actually cared about the day before in any capacity unless their brain leaked out of their ears

also @nickakyoin true enough, but that goes for pretty much any mmo. there's no official way to play it

not that you'd want to anyway other than for a quick look lmao

@chandler ofc

I'm pretty surprised not to see Yooka-Laylee here. lol
Yooka definitely fits

Five nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach was incredibly hyped up due to it being the first free roam FNAF game, it ended up releasing in an infamously terrible state.

Evolve really felt like a passing of the torch in a way. When it came out everyone was getting tired of MP focused FPS games and the industry shifted at a very brisk pace after that. Granted many SP games now have MP poisoning in them to keep people hooked as long as possible.

On Advent rising, it's to my understanding that on the Series X and 1x, it's finally playable at a solid frame rate. So that's something. The PC port is still fucked to this day.

@chandler I know it ended up being a scam, but I thought I heard people being excited about it before knowing. I wasn't sure though, that's why I trusted your discretion :)

I'm not sure if it was overhyped but uhh... Strafe and Shenmue 3?

1 month ago

@xelith yeah that was just part of the scam. everyone heard the whole "most wishlisted game on steam" thing and nobody knew what the game even was. then that incredible 'life at fntastic' video dropped and the rest is history

@albg1 i don't think anyone really cared much about strafe, but shenmue 3 delivered on exactly what it promised - being a shenmue game. i think most people just weren't prepared for a shenmue game to be trash - they must not've played the rest of the series in a while

@chandler on star fox zero:
it always had a bit of metroid prime federation force type of doom looming over it, but i remember a fair amount of optimistic hype for it.
when it was first shown off, it originally presented itself as a return to the traditional star fox formula that had been gone since 64, which was the last game in the series before it went off the rails literally and figuratively.
the game is basically a retread of the same story as 64 with the same characters and locations. this is exactly what nintendo fans circa 2016 were clamoring for; the same game they played 10-15 years prior. some people had hope for good gameplay and neat usage of the gamepad.
all of the optimism immediately faded away when it launched.
