When I first booted up Cuphead a few days ago, I was greeted with a brand-new title screen and song. It was for The Delicious Last Course and honestly, I like it a lot more than the new title screen. This was a sign of good things to come with the new DLC and I'm happy to say it's pretty great.

I actually used one of the new weapons a ton in my replay of the base game but crackshot really is amazing. It's basically chaser but better and it was my primary weapon in this DLC alongside charge shot. Converge and Twist-up were the other two new weapons and I wasn't really a fan of either so I barely used them. There were also some new charms that were added as well. Astral cookie let's you play as Ms. Chalice, the ghost that awards you your different supers in the base game. She can be kinda broken since she has 4 health, an invincible role and a dash that parries. I also found it kind of weird to use her so I used Cuphead for the most part. The divine relic is one you need to put a bit of work into. It starts as a broken relic which you can basically activate by defeating this weird secret graveyard boss. Once you do, you can start defeating other bosses to eventually turn it into the divine relic. While you do, all sorts of effects happen like starting at 1 HP, having your normal attack change constantly and having an in-consistent smoke bomb. Once you defeat enough bosses tho, you get the divine relic which can be incredibly OP if you're skilled enough. The changing normal attacks are still a thing, which is why you need to be skilled enough I said, but you get a normal smoke bomb, the axe parry move and you have an ability where you get health on your 1st, 3rd and 6th parry which can be crazy broken. The last charm is basically just that last parry effect on its own and its the one I stuck with throughout the DLC, it can make A and S ranks stupid easy to get.

Speaking of Ms. Chalice again, I did use her a lot in one area of the game. The king's leap is a series of parry challenges and she is super useful with her dash parry. This one one of my favorite parts of the DLC ngl, it was really fun. I even did The Gauntlet which has you doing all of the challenges in a row without a break in between. It wasn't too bad and the executioner was definitely my favorite of the bunch. Also the presentation of the castle and it looking like it's made out of clay was amazing.

Now onto the meat and potatoes once again, the bosses. Yeah, there's only bosses now and no Run and Gun stages. While I do prefer the bosses a bunch, with there only being 6 total this DLC just flies by and is one of my biggest criticisms tbh. Idk, I just wish this was a little longer because what's here is great, you can just beat it in no time is the problem. Anyways onto the bosses. It has some of the best bosses in the entire game and some alright ones. The Howling Aces was easily my least favorite when I first played and that was all because of the last phase where the screen rotates. It felt cheap at the time and I really did not like it but now after S ranking it (yes this is the one and only S rank I got funnily enough) if you turn your head and understand that the dog bowl color lets you know what they will do, it's not that bad. I'm still not the biggest fan of it tho. Esther Winchester was the only flying stage and I thought it was okay. I just found some of the later stages really annoying but again funnily enough, it was another one I was able to expert in the end. Mortimer Freeze and Glumstone the Giant I don't really have much to say besides they were both pretty good. I didn't expert either, Mortimer especially is a pain in the ass on expert. Chef Saltbaker was definitely one of the best in the game even though his fight can be a real bullet hell at times. The spectacle of it really did it for me and he was another one I didn't expert. I saved the best for last and while the fight is fun, the presentation alone made this my favorite. Moonshine Mob was easily my favorite fight just because it was so creative. It's a mob of bugs that all play a part in the fight. First off the announcer was different this time and it was one of the members of the mob which was great. The spider and the light bug were both fun and very expressive. The music is also sung by the light bug which is a nice touch. Then near the end of the fight, we find out the head of the mob was actually the announcer from the beginning..the snail. He's teaming up with an anteater which is so brilliant because you know he uses the anteater to scare or even kill other bugs. Then when you defeat the anteater there's a fucking fake knock out screen that can actually trip you up since I thought it was just a quirky little change up like the initial announcer was but the fact it's a fake out from the snail, it was the cherry on top of the already incredible presentation in this fight. Like I said, easily the best in this DLC and may even be the best in the game. This was another fight I was able to expert as well.

I got all trophies which only required me to S rank one boss so I didn't expert everything like I said. I just don't find expert mode too fun so I don't think it's a huge deal. Either way, great DLC overall. I think I do like the base game more just because this DLC was really short and I didn't love every boss here, but what was good was really damn good so I definitely recommend every Cuphead fan plays it.

Okay I swear my next review will be Chrono Trigger. I keep putting it off and I really got to get back to it 😭

quite possibly the greatest eight dollars you'll ever spend

I ate an entire bottle of salt in preparation for playing this game

Perfect DLC for a perfect game, what else is there to say.

After coming back to finish the game I decided to get the DLC and give it a try just to definitively finish off the game and I had a really great time with it. Check out my review for the main game here - https://www.backloggd.com/u/Flameyboy928/review/1506125/

It has everything amazing about the first game which I have already talked about at length in my Cuphead review. Still with the amazing art style and music mixed with a good bunch of unique boss fights. I managed to beat most of the bosses with ease with the exception of the ice wizard guy and the salt shaker due to the sheer amount of projectiles you need to dodge at one time being a bit too much. I played most of the game as Miss Chalice, because she is very OP and I wanted as little of a headache as possible lol.

The DLC adds a lot of new power ups and shot types. I never tried most of them due to how ridiculously OP crackshot is. Pair that with Miss Chalice and no wonder most of the bosses feel easier.

The Delicious Last Course makes for a really fun and enjoyable DLC, well worth the price for the content that it gives you. I do wonder where Studio MDHR will go from here, if they will make more Cuphead games or move to something different. Great DLC that is actually worth the money for once.

The most bang for your buck single player DLC I've played a long time. Cut out the fluff of the main game (the subpar run and gun stages) and left you with nothing but boss fights where the "worst" are still better than some of the more mid tier ones in the base game. Contains MORE TOTAL FRAMES OF ANIMATION THAN THE BASE GAME and it shows.

I'm not the biggest fan of Miss Chalice's dash auto parrying, I've had it put me into disadvantageous situations more times than I would have liked and I never really used her invincible roll but she's the perfect middle ground for people who struggled with the base game to play a character that's easier without seeming too overpowered making the game's difficulty too trivial. My only real complaint is that the new songs don't stand up to most of the base game's.

Also, was that a Silhouette Mirage reference I spotted in the secret boss fight? Normally I would chalk it up to coincidence, I don't think it's too original a concept that nobody else could have thought of it on their own, but considering these devs, I wouldn't doubt it!

When I booted the game up and heard that banger I knew I was about to be annihilated.

It's good! After 5 years of waiting for the DLC, most of the hype for it has pretty much dissipated and getting it all of the sudden like if it was 2017 all over again was a pleasant surprise. Even odder is how much this DLC feels like something that would have been released just 1 year after the main game. Nothing has fundamentally changed, it being pretty much a boss pack for players already experienced with the main campaign, smartly ditching out the run n' gun stages and focusing exclusively on the things that make Cuphead such a visual joy to play.

Part of me wished that, after 5 long years, Cuphead would bring in something more creatively challenging or at the very least evolve the boss rush concept beyond a new character to play as and a couple of new weapons and charms, but I gotta say that I appreciated this small sized encore that didn't outstay its welcome, had it been a chunkier campaign and the Cuphead fatigue would probably set in.

Hard not to once again be impressed by the level of commitment and care that the devs took with the presentation and how perfectly it encapsulates a bygone era of animation, and the challenge provided is still engaging enough to master while not frustrating to the point of giving up. In terms of criticism, I'll say that the propensity for the difficulty of Cuphead to lean on screen clutter that is hard to keep track of and that relies a bit too much on RNG for my liking is definitely most felt on this DLC. Luckily, the King's Leap stages and the secret boss alleviate this issue with unique gimmicks that force you to play differently and provide a welcoming break from the main content.

I leave Delicious Last Course with my stomach happily full, but I fear the devs now sit at a comfortable position where they can keep chucking Cuphead content out for as long as they please. If Cuphead 2 is an inevitability, then I hope this DLC serves as a victory lap for the incredibly successful endeavour this team put itself through, and doesn't become just a recipe to strictly follow for their remaining future.

I love that this game answers the question "Do the other creatures cook and eat the anthropomorphic food in Cuphead?" with "Yes they do, and it's a horrifying act of murder".

the course was indeed delicious. although that boss behind the tombstone puzzle gives me nightmares

so called "free thinkers" when they unlock crackshot => 🐑🐑🐑

Recently, I decided to revisit some of my favorite indie games, and Cuphead was my first pick since there was also new content released.

Most bosses in this dlc completely surpass every single main game boss in quality, complexity and spectacle. Paterns are visually gorgeous, fun to learn and clearly telegraphed, making every hit you take your fault and not the game being unfair. This makes it so even though the game is difficult, it is never too frustrating.

Getting all achievements and S ranks made the game last just the right amount of time (around 15 hrs main game + dlc) therefore removing the only complaint I have with the dlc, it's short lenght. It also added an extra challenge which made this second playthrough almost as hard as my first.

The Delicious Last Coures confirms that the main game was not a fluke. As a result, studioMDHR is now part of the list of dev teams that I fully trust and will play any game they make in the future.

a wonderful piece of dlc for an already great game. all of the bosses in this mini adventure stack up very well to the foes from the main game and it was a joy fighting through them all. the new shot types are also really cool and the secrets are fun to find. if you like cuphead this a must

They sold Touhou DDC under the guise of Cuphead DLC

The wait for the DLC was a bit too long, but it was a wait that was well worth it. It definitely could have used a couple of extra bosses, but given how long and difficult it is for them to add the quality of animation this game has, it can be excused. Speaking of the animation, there is definitely a noticeable improvement with it compared to the base game which already had impressive animation. The DLC also adds a new playable character, three new weapons, a gauntlet of mini-bosses which are pretty fun, and a Game Djimmi easter egg that makes the game a little bit more accessible to players who may not be as experienced. Ms. Chalice's dodge and special moves are extremely useful and make her quite a broken character once you get used to using her. One of the new weapons, Crack Shoot, is also pretty busted and will be a very useful tool in beating the new bosses, all of which are roughly around the same difficulty if not a little harder than the ones in the base game. The final boss is probably the hardest boss in the game but is a very satisfying conclusion to both the DLC and just to the game as a whole. The price for the DLC is also shockingly cheap, almost to the point of highway robbery. In conclusion, it is both a great DLC and finale to a masterpiece that is very much worth your time and money.

So my favorite part of the DLC is probably going to seem pretty boring in comparison to the lavishly produced bosses and the new playable character, but it’s the inclusion of two new abilities that have upended some of my ingrained habits. The first is the Crackshot, a more powerful and slightly dumber version of the Chaser, whose EX shot is a turret that lets you double your firepower. The thing can do insane damage, especially in fights where’d you normally have to consciously target the boss, but the tradeoff is that you’re constantly trying to find time to place the it- and importantly, find a spot onscreen where it won’t make contact with the boss and break. It emphasizes positioning in a way many of the other shot types don’t, and gives you a good reason to switch between weapons, always aware that you could be getting in a little bit more damage if you place a turret somewhere in the bedlam of a fight.

The second ability, and probably the more controversial inclusion, is a charm that lets you regain health after a certain number of parries. Right now it does feel slightly broken, (you can still S-rank bosses you’ve taken a stupid number of hits on) but it solves one of my biggest problems of the original game, where one hit early on was enough for me to just reset the fight. Now there’s a reason to stick around and really know bosses' patterns, trying to parry everything they throw out to fill out your health bar, instead of just going for the three safest moves in their repertoire to hit the threshold for a decent score. Again, its an inclusion that gives fights a real spark, a great sense of wanting to be everywhere at once, trying to balance damage and survivability.

They’re a much-needed upset for a game, that for me, had slowly become Charge-Shot/Spread-Shot/Smoke Bomb over the course of time, and while I imagine that they’ll continue to be changed with later updates, they’re emblematic of a DLC that does a great job of pushing a good game that much further to greatness with these sorts of subtle additions. Same goes for the puzzle-like “King of Games” fights- simple challenges that offer a bit of extra cash if you want to totally disregard the Run ‘n Gun stages. They seem like something of a pleasant distraction right now, but offer a bit more agency in buying upgrades, no longer forced to pay the fun tax if you want an additional weapon- a change that will likely become more appreciable with time.

I think my biggest problem with the DLC is more one of familiarity: six good bosses that are Hard but Fairℱ, but nothing so taxing as the boss gauntlet of King Dice, or as wildly varied as Sugarland Shimmy. Just a distinctly iterative feeling surrounding the whole thing, which is great for its fundamentals, but somewhat disappointing when its new bosses fit in so neatly with the original cast. (Moonshine Mob is the standout though, can’t say enough good things about it, and it’s probably top-to-bottom the best production Studio MDHR has created.)

There’s also a part of me that wishes this had some kind of extras gallery or a replay mode as a way of letting players really appreciate the staggering amount of passion that’s gone into the animation here. The whole DLC seems like a conscious shift towards making the game more approachable, with the new kit and additional challenges geared as much to new players as they are to die-hard fans- but the core paradox of Cuphead being this game sold on the quality of its animation (that you’ll have no chance to appreciate while playing), still hasn’t changed.

Forgive me if this felt like the patch notes revue, so many of my problems with the original were these ultra-specific hang ups: that lack of a recovery mechanic or what felt like a clear hierarchy of weapons and abilities. The Delicious Last Course makes those choices ambiguous for the first time in years, adding a bit more life to a game that had felt increasingly stifled- probably harder to appreciate right now, (had to quiet the deeply unhelpful part of me that wanted this to materialize into a Silksong-style standalone game), but the kinds of smart additions that will help the more easily game sit alongside the classics it’s paying tribute to.

It’s one thing to make a great boss rush game/DLC but it’s another thing to make the animations so saucy and smooth that Walt Disney would do a flip on sight if he saw it

Rapid fire thoughts
- Bosses are as fun and creative as ever, with some of them doing some really tricky maneuvers like messing with the screen orientation. My favorite of the bunch was the dogfighting one.
- Though they did feel like there was a bit less to them, might be due to most of them having less phases than the late bosses of the main game
- I equipped the crackshot in my second slot and never looked back, this was really handy at making the chaser obsolete
- Hard pass on playing as Miss Chalice, not a big fan of characters that are as much of an upgrade in abilities as she is and I found it more enjoyable with the basic setup of Cuphead. Same kind of situation as Toadette in the NSMBU rerelease.
- Found the challenges for coins that focus on parrying pretty interesting, especially as a sort of replacement for the Run & Gun segments. They got pretty creative with the ways you use it. The horse one sucks tho.
- That new title screen theme is a banger

"Minha linguiça é cuiabana, mas o tempero é pura pimenta do sertão!" - Maria Muunita, Brazil's most notable cabra da peste

Leaves a little to be desired but ultimately a very well done dlc and for a really great price too

Honestly a bit shorter than I was expecting but I think it says a lot that the few hours it took me to complete this felt like half the time because it was a fucking blast the entire runtime. Literally none of the bosses miss.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course not only gave us more of the addictive gameplay and challenge that it’s known for, but it also adds to it in creative ways thanks in part to the new character Chalice who shakes up the formula with a double jump, roll and parry dash. Adding to that are new weapons and charms and my favorite, the addition of King’s Leap which I absolutely loved. King’s Leap will have you fighting a variety of enemies where damage can only be done with the parry attack and is some of the most fun I had with the DLC.

Cuphead has cemented itself in my top 10 games of all time as my son and I have poured over 200 hours into this incredible title. You can only imagine how much we have been looking forward to The Delicious Last Course since it was announced years ago. Now that we have beaten the DLC multiple times I am happy to report that the amazing Canadian team at MDHR (had to plug my home country here) exceeded my expectations.

I can easily say that the bosses in The Delicious Last Course are some of my favorites in the entire game and Chalice will be a character I am looking forward to testing against the remaining bosses.

insane labor of love. Studio MDHR has honed their craft here, some of the boss animations here make the base game (of Cuphead!!!) look bad. they've doubled down on the chaotic aspects of these fights which I really enjoy, it's a part of the game I used to really dislike but have come to appreciate and recognize overtime as an extension of the art direction, a bit frustrating yelling "what the fuck is going on???" in the moment as I fight canned sausage meat, but then the death screen rolls and I think "that's awesome, actually."

ms. chalice is really fun! she's kind of overpowered outside of the dlc, but I think I would have enjoyed this a lot less if it wasn't for her, I could go without the extra hitpoint but the rest of her kit I think is pretty strictly better than Cuphead & Mugman's, and i'm sure this'll attract a lot of people who struggle with the game.

unfortunately, it looks like there aren't any run and gun levels included in the package, which is a bit of a shame, boss fights are definitely Cuphead's strong suit but still, I would have liked to have seen some here. the king's challenges sort of act as their replacement, but while they are very decent, they fall a bit short in that regard. the new upgrades i'm mixed on too, crackshot is amazing and quickly became my favourite weapon, but I barely used converge, having to lock in place to tighten the beam is really unintuitive, and twister is an incredibly situational weapon, even when it can be used most effectively I think it's outclassed by other guns. the heart ring is a great charm, but on the other hand the divine relic feels kind of - broken? I dunno, maybe that sounds pretentious, but in spite of it's drawbacks it trivializes some fights so badly that it feels almost... wrong, for lack of a better term. still though I can't deny it's a little fun to powertrip through bosses with it, but I think i'm just going to keep the astral cookie on my charm slot.

I don't have a ton to say about Cuphead's DLC, and to be fair neither does the game, the amount of content here amounts to about a bit over a third of the base game -- it only took me about an hour and a half to see it all, yet to a certain degree it still surpasses the original three isles's quality in almost every way, so if it really came down to it, I would be perfectly content with waiting another four years for this. fuckin' rules.

You can tell they got revenge for 10 years of slave labor on this whole package because they went full stop evil giving the final boss nothing but disconnected attack animations for two phases

Cuphead is perfect. DLC is perfect. Fuck i love this game so much

DLC 10/10

4 years... Ive waited 4 long years for this very moment..

I really enjoy Cuphead, so of course I was very excited for the dlc to release. Needless to say, I think it lived up to the hype. I do think this dlc is a bit on the short side, but I can forgive it since it's only 1 isle. It's not really meant to be that big, although I would be happy with 1 or 2 more bosses. The bosses here are some of the best in the game, although I do think they get a bit too hectic at times, but figuring out the method to the madness is oh so
satisfying. Its also supposed to be the "last course" so I guess I can excuse its difficulty

The new additions here are just plain great, the charms and weapons are very helpful with turning the tides in fights. Except for the cursed relic, because simply put, fuck that shit. Ms. Chalice is also a great addition, she brings enough to the table but doesn't feel too out of place or easy, even with the additional abilities and health. The castle is also a really cool way of replacing the run and gun stages of the base game (the worst part of it in my books). Fighting a short boss to earn coins is really cool and fits into the game so well its a wonder why they didn't do it in the first place.

The game looks better than ever, you can really feel every second of those 4 years in the presentation. The colors pop and remind me of candy for some reason, maybe I'm just hungry. Animations lead way to telegraph attacks better than they ever did in the base game. The wackiness and expression in the animation is better than it ever was and taken up to eleven. The music also adds to the overall presentation of the game, it's just as jazzy as it ever was.

It's definitely a delicious last course, as the gameplay, bosses, and animation make that great soup that composed the original cuphead. While the new stuff adds a whole new flavor.

However.. they replaced the old cuphead theme for a worse one, so I'm actually giving this game a 0/10. Fuck you MDHR.
