I wish I could uh... delete y-know sort of uh-"naturalistic" dialogue and such from this here uh... earth. I won't be too harsh cause this is a 2015 game and the idea of the very meta "videogame about videogame development" hadnt quite been fully driven into the ground by over exposure yet. The sound design and art are pretty good, but otherwise I can't say I'm terribly impressed, at least it was short.

One of the video games of all time

Link to the game: Dr.Langeskov..

Through it's own limited and single goal of merely existing amusingly aware of itself as a game, the crowscrowscrows formula of the meta-fictional "Stanley-like" walking sim, gets made and breaks by the quality and quantity of jokes the devs hide inside them - by the strength and length of the back and fourth, by just how many different narrator reactions can be triggered by the player's actions or non-actions and by how funny all of those are to the player.

If I wait long enough will something else happen?

No, this is a free game.
And that last line sounded pretty concluding, at least in it's verbiage even if the vocal delivery made it seem like he wasn't quite done talking.

What if I press this thing, or this thing, will each of those inputs by me contain a new line of dialogue by the narrator as a response?

No, most of them will not.
Writing good branching jokes can be hard and hiring Voice actors can be expensive.

Unfolding in the backstage hallways of a fictional heist game of which the player gets tasked to orchestrate the functions for the current "real player" and Dr. Langeskov structuring the gags around this, what turned for me out to be a sadly pretty one-note effort at a meta-narrative, appeard to be the only script he holds for the player.

In my first few minutes of play, the setup still seemed novel enough to lend itself for some creativity. Novel considering at the least when this got released, but like with a bad South Park episode the same joke over and over can get pretty boring if the execution lacks and the joke wasn't even that funny in the first place, turning your twenty minutes with it into an eye rolling exercise.

The most intense the voice actor gets in response to your action also doesn't stem from what you choose to do or didn't do. The game just won't even let you execute a specific interaction the narrator asks from the player. You can't pick up the ringing dial-phones placed in some areas, when you try to your player character lifts it up a bit just to hangs up.
Is this funny? That is completly subjective like all humour and all things probably.
But is it disappointing that the most passionate the game raises its voice at the player happens to be the result of it's own unaddressed limitations? I would argue so. If the game addressed this dissonance beforehand it might have worked better for me, but the narrator acts like I should be able to answer those calls, which in all honesty made me in that moment feel like I should be able to and just pressed the wrong inputs or something, and the "lmao you can't even do that" punchline fell kinda flat as a result.
Idk I think the game could've thematizised that lack of interplay, that Illusion of choice, but it rather wanted to make a gag without adressing any of it, which felt dull.

The first few minutes and rooms turned out to be the highlight, obviously because the joke just started, but also because the narrators need to rush the player combined with the environmental story telling he wants you to skip made the games world appear bigger than it actually is and confident in itself.
Once the Novelty wore completly off I just tried stuff to see if I got a reaction, but getting predominantly disappointed was mine.

I really enjoyed that you never see the "real game" and that all the tasks you take part in to make the other person's experience possible existed also to paint some interesting pictures in my head, but before I could properly draw them out the narrators voice always interrupted my thoughts with the same gag or some new medial task.

It should be obvious from the start that there won't be a heist for you to experience, but even if I saw the ending coming from a mile away I still enjoyed it's execution, at least enough to make the credits hit somewhat.

I am gonna stop doing this product review thing in which I try to boil a game down to the target audience it might appeal to, because it is antithetical to most of the things I usualy wanna achieve while writing and seems reductive. I'll have to learn how write a proper conclusion or some shit idk.

A proper conclusion

Definitely worth the price (free lol). Made me giggle once or twice but wasn't anything special

Really fun and short game. It feels like The Stanley Parable Lite and succeeds really well at that. Only issues I had with it were achievements not working sometimes, and there not being any branching paths like The Stanley Parable had. Still a fun, quick game that you should try if you have like 20-30 minutes to spare.

CROWS OFF THE SHITS FOR THIS ONE WE LOVE A TERRIBLY CURSED EMERALD

It's okay. The devs clearly think this is cleverer than it actually is. But hey, it's shorter than The Stanley Parable and didn't make me sob like The Beginner's Guide.

This is better than the Stanley Parable cuz I only have to do it one time.

A goofy little walking sim that'll probably put a smile on your face. Definitely worth playing for a few minutes, given it's free. I sure had fun, anyway!

first person 3d visual novel with ok humor

funny joke game i should probably play again since i remember nothing

A short story about the sort of behind-the-scenes world of video game management inspired by the success of Stanley Parable. There is also an announcer here, but he is so so, although there are a couple of funny moments, unlike Stanley, here your decisions do not affect anything and even very few remarks from the announcer if you try to do something not according to instructions.

In general, a normal indie story without any special secret deep meanings, well, at least I did not find them, but with Incredibly beautiful map design. My respect to the mapper.

I think the rating speaks more for the effort that went into the art direction for this game for Crows Crows Crows being a relatively unknown studio, for putting this out even though it's a short experience, its visual department is unique.

Although, it is shortlived mostly because of the lack of choices you actually have in game, and that also some things in the script might be too much too fast to handle but after a bit (and especially if you go hunting for achievements) you understand your place as a player who wants to play the game, only to be used as a backstage person who would do the stuff for you, to other person.

But sadly, not much gameplay and not too much diversion, doesn't even come with an episode system or something so you could at least rewind to a part if you missed a collectible (coin or pretzel) so the achievements aren't that hard to get.

all I want in life is a space where half-hour games with clever concepts and great writing can just exist without needing to be anything more than that

I mean, I can see how you could take this game the wrong way.

A little comedy sketch which, fortunately, doesn't drag much. You have a laugh, and it ends. Nothing offensive, very inconsequential

I want more funny walking simulators. There are like 3 total and all of them were made by William Pugh.

Nothing is less funny than a British Comedy Nerd

Nothing brings me more pleasure than saying the entire name of this game when recommending it to people.

ENG: Glorified paragraph. The title is the letter of introduction, the tip of the iceberg of what is to come.

ESP: Parrafada glorificada.

A game that can make you laugh out loud while having a good time is objectively a great game and this one nails it. Short, to the point, funny, the kind of game you want to show your friends and laugh with 'em.

the premise is fun but that's all i can say for it really

Gostosinho.

After the Stanley Parable Wreden split off to make The Beginners Guide a very mature and interesting look into the psyche of game dev and critique. In contrast Pugh just kept milking The Stanley Parable by just making worse versions of it. It may seem cruel to overly critique a free 20 minute game, but there is nothing here worth seeing.

The concept seems cute at first, what if every time someone played a game the devs had to run it like a play performance? But the game does nothing with it. the gameplay is simply just basic walking and clicking buttons. The comedy is all variations of "Everything is under control ! something bad happens" or "Hit this switch *something bad happens" Uhh I mean this other switch". The narrator can be hard to understand due to his mushy pronunciation. The art design basically just looks like backstage a large performance with lacking the clever touches of the Stanley Parable. Even being short and free there is just nothing here worth seeing unless you like hearing variations of the same joke for 20 minutes.

Not super amazing but not bad either - a quirky little concept

A cute and fun little game that shares this witty spirit and meta structure with "The Stanley Parable" (since they were made by the same author)
