ALL TIME FAVORITE GAME
i could’ve put this for nearly every category. i just really love this game so so much like no other game. what else is there to say?

FAVORITE SERIES (Souls)
This one took me the longest to figure out. I could go on and on about everything this series continuously does right: memorable characters and environments, the highest highs and lowest lows of boss design, “well-balanced” multiplayer (that i’m simply no good at). so much of why i love video games can be found in the souls series (and i do include elden ring and sekiro and bloodborne fuckin especially.)

Kiryu’s relentless desire to do good by EVERYONE, regardless of their stance, is shit i love to see. He’s a good dad, a great friend, funny as hell, sexy as hell and kicks fuckin ass (with several amazing performances by Takaya Kuroda) Probably have shed more real life tears over this dude than any other fictional character

Grunty comin in whenever she feels like it to talk shit at you IN RHYME will forever hold a place in my heart.

FAVORITE STORY
it helps that i was hyped for this going in back in 2008 and i may have been young for sure but no other game story has really stuck with me all these years like this one. not just the major storyline and of course the great 2nd act twist, but all the environmental storytelling and the audio logs and shit too. nearly perfect execution and payoff, though it does kinda take a nosedive towards the end.

Walking thru the frozen wastes west of winterhold, i look up and marvel at the aurora dancing in the sky. i don’t watch where i’m going. a horker rips me to shreds. haven’t saved in a bit, end up back in the college. some dude is walking into a table, maintaining direct eye contact.

FAVORITE GAME TO PLAY WITH MY WIFE
We’ve been at it for YEARS in the bingo battle multiplayer. we’ve completely memorized the maps and variations and item locations. always funny when we gotta fight over the grapes and shit.

A GAME EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY
Everyone loves ocarina of time, but it doesn’t really have a good art style or good characters or a fun story or crazy lookin monsters or ties to real japanese folklore. not even a playable dog. if only there was another way!

BATSHIT INSANE GAME
there’s a moment here where you chase a plastic flamingo down a crazy shifting hallway of the flamingo’s design and then you play the mini game where you shoot the faceless cube people. this happens shortly after your latest phone call from a ghost. this doesn’t even crack the top 5 most insane things this game does.

FAVORITE ENDING
picking Reach not only as the best ending in the series (fantastic final cutscene and mission) but also as the ending of bungie’s run making the games. it really felt like something was over, not like it was when halo 3 ended. like the end of an era. it was different and i miss these games every day. crazy how they never did another one since

FAVORITE BOSS FIGHT
as if i could give this to anyone other than Ornstein & Smough. Great location, great music, an intense and fun challenge, probably the only true challenge in DS1. The gank squad boss hallmark that every game afterward tried and failed to recreate. Hits like fuckin crack when u win.

CHILDHOOD GAME
i understand that at a glance picking an MK title for childhood game may be a lil fucked up but hear me out. My first M rated game, and my uncle got me this game when we both knew i wasn’t allowed to have it. it was my first real exposure to blood n guts and ultraviolence like this. i’m not sure i’d be the same without MK4

Halo is the reason my best friend and I are best friends. when we weren’t blasting thru the campaign we were learning how to get out of bounds or coming up with intricate 1v1 rules (central arena on Turf, shouts out) this went on for years until he moved away. but then halo 3 and xbox lived popped off and the rest is delicious delicious history

reach was the swan song. 4 was the years long death rattle. everything afterwards is like repeating that opening scene of full metal alchemist where they try to bring their dead mom back. sometimes dead is better (shouts out fred gwyne)

When Halo fell, doom was right there to pick up the “best FPS series ever” pieces with this gorgeous piece of incredible violence. blastin away lil fucked up demons while mick gordon’s crazy soundtrack bumps in the back makes me feel like i’m doin cocaine

i love guitar rhythm games. who needs real musical talent (which i do have, but i’m not trying to brag ((yes i am)) )
was a time we were throwing tournies and shit for real money which then evolved into us going to real show and beating the shit out of each other because of the MUSIC instead of points and power ups.
still play these days, albeit way more casually, but you’ll have to pry expert mode from my cold, sore fingers (likely easy cuz this shit hurts now)

i wish i could say i put 500 hours into this in under a year because of covid and NOT because i made my own eFed and ran it for several hours each night over the course of a year but no one would ever believe me

at the time of this list creation (march 15, 2024) im still playing death stranding, i started roughly back in december. it’s likely to be that way forever because why would i want to see what’s going on with the story when i can set up an entire circuit of zip lines to deliver all my little packages to? closing in on 100 hours played and i don’t even think i’m halfway done. don’t get wrong, the game is UH-mazing, however it’s NEVER going to happen at least not in this life
