The Game I Most Want to Play - Each Year I've Been Alive

As opposed to the classic "favorite game from each year I've been alive," these are games I haven't played but really want/need to. This list will probably be a mix of GLARING omissions from my experience and games that I'm simply very curious about. I hope to update this list as time goes on, with titles I've played being rotated off with new games.

1996: Starting off with perhaps the BIGGEST omission from my gaming lexicon, I should really just bite the bullet and play this at some point, irrespective of my lack of reverence for the Mario series or 3D platformers writ large

1997: This game got a TON of love and attention pumped back into it after its recent re-release, which has shot this up to the top of my retro games list. I'm glad this got the re-release, as I'm not sure I would've heard of it otherwise.

1998: I love stealth games. I love immersive sims. I love so many games that point to Thief as their primary inspiration, as their daddy. I definitely owe it to myself to play through these games, as I'm quite sure that I'd love them.

FORMER ENTRIES: Ridge Racer Type 4
1999: After Night Dive Studio's 2023 remaster of OG System Shock, I'm half-tempted to wait for a remake of this one, but I understand that it's far more playable than its predecessor. I love sci-fi, I love imm-sims. I'm pretty sure I'd love this

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2000: While searching for games from 2000 to choose, my interest was immediately piqued by Galatea's cover art. I don't know much about it, other than its critical acclaim as an interactive piece of fiction, but I'm eager to check it out.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2001: To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if I should start here or with its predecessor, but this one is certainly more zeitgeisty, so I guess I'll start here. As someone that's only recently gotten into horror games, you can't throw a stick when discussing good horror without hitting a battalion of Silent Hill 2 fans, so maybe I should see what all the fuss is about.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2002: My first foray into the Resident Evil series was the RE2 Remake, so I'm more than a little tempted to wait for an over-the-shoulder remake of RE1. Still, it's a classic that I'm fairly sure I'd love, I'll just have to get over my anxiety of limited-saves and tank controls

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2003: I only recently found out about this one, but c'mon. Just look at this lil dude! After seeing the name and the cover art, I was shocked to see that this released in 2003 for the PS2 and not on Steam and Itch in 2018

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2004: It took me awhile, but I'm officially Doom-pilled as of 2023. I've now played every entry in the series aside from Doom 3, so I'm eager to go back and see how it is, with the understanding that it's different.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2005: I feel like I've seen some buzz around this game recently that heralds it as a mid-00s sleeper hit. It's a great premise, and I'm officially a big boy that can play spooky games, so I need to check it out.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2006: I've always been curious to check these handheld variants of III, Vice City, and San Andreas out. I think Liberty City Stories is still higher up on my list, but Vice City is 2006, baybee

FORMER ENTRIES: OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
2007: To be completely honest, I don't know much about this game other than people love it, and I'm nothing if not acquiescent

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2008: I have a real fascination with these early "modern" indie games, and World of Goo has always been on my to-play list. I've owned it for years, but have yet to get around to it properly.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2009: A game I've been meaning to get around to for ages, but just haven't. I'm not really a big Visual Novel guy, but the DS is full of VNs that I'm super keen to try, with 999 probably at the top of that list.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2010: I've been utterly fascinated by the back-and-forth discourse around this game in the decade since its release, as evident in its WILD rating curve here on Backloggd. If nothing else, I'd love to see what it has to offer and why it's bene so divisive.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2011: Kind of a cheat here - I've played Portal 2's co-op chambers, but have never played it's singleplayer. It's my list though, so I can cheat however I want. Portal was my favorite game of 2007, so I fully expect to slob this one's knob.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2012: This game's always seemed right up my alley, I've just never gotten around to playing it. I'm a little curious as to how well it works without multiplayer, or at the very least how many players are playing this today.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2013: Papers, Please is one of those games that I know I'm going to be goo-goo over, but I just haven't played. Fully expect to 5-star this one, whenever I get around to actually trying it.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2014: Jazzpunk's another one of those games that I know I'll love, I just haven't gotten around to playing it.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2015: As a huge fan of The Stanley Parable, this one is another game that's been on my "to-play" list for years. And like many others, I know that I'll love it, as soon as I get around to it.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2016: I'm not really a rhythm-game-player, but the critical praise I've seen of this game supersedes any hesitation I may have had around the genre.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2017: I know basically nothing about this game, other than that it's supposed to be good.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2018: This has been recommended to me to death by my friend and DOOM mapper extraordinaire whybmnonotacrab - I love KIRA's Lunacid, and my slow warming to horror games means I need to probably push this up my list.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2019: Another recommendation from whybmonotacrab - I have no familiarity with Taiwanese horror or Red Candle Games's previous work, but Devotion looks great.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2020: The premise for this one has always drawn me in, but learning that it came from the Citizen Sleeper devs catapulted it to the front of the line for the year.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2021: This game looks EXTREMELY my jam, a notion that's only been bolstered by the praise that it's been drenched in.

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2022: CHAINSAW LEG CHAINSAW LEG CHAINSAW LEG CHAINSAW LEG CHAINSAW LEG

FORMER ENTRIES: None
2023: Randomly stumbled on this one in my Steam Discovery Queue one day and was immediately intrigued. It's cheap as chips, so I should really pick it up and give it a spin.
