Speaking as someone who is a bitch and plays horror games in spite of that? I don't think Silent Hill 2/4, Kamaitachi No Yoru, Dead Space, or Clock Tower Ghost Head are particularly scary so those may be fine
The rest though, jesus christ yeah

@C_F i think i could handle clock tower SNES actually but idk about the other two!!!! also kamaitachi seems stressful as hell and i'll probably be very wary of graphic image jumpscares. but i'm 100% sure i can't handle any silent hill because i almost died playing 1

I can also vouch for SH2 not being the scariest, mainly unsettling if anything. I used to be terrified of horror games and when I was 8 I had recurring nightmares every time I'd watch my brother play SH4 lol, it made me put off the series for ages but nothing really scared me in SH2 when I played it a few months ago. maybe it was harder for me to feel immersed with PS2 graphics but I even tried turning off the lights for Maximum Immersion and all that did was give me a headache... but yeah I'd recommend it to anyone regardless of spookiness, it's a must play!

@Mewtsukki tbf SH1 is much, much scarier than 2. I actually find SNES Clock Tower scarier than the rest of the series since it's the least goofy. Also, Kamaitachi No Yoru (at least, the original version) has no graphic jumpscares, at least in the first major route. I doubt this is any different in other routes due to the ultra minimalist aesthetic, but I haven't read every route yet cus trying to read an untranslated VN where every kanji is 8 pixels wide really breaks a motherfucker
I have only played dead space and the evil within and confirm I didnt really find either that scary

You could build up your tolerance, like one does with spices, start with the least scary and slowly up the dose

Gregory Horror Show is a good beginners horror game. It plays kind of similarly so at least you'll understand movement. Don't start with early Fatal Frame

Oh yes the fact of beeing a bitch and still playing horror games. I can feel that struggle. I say start with Yume Nikki so you can get comfortable with that impossible space atmosphere a lot of horror games have. Also not so much a horror game as much as a melancholy walk through a dream, if that even makes any sense. Its all about soaking in the atmosphere and not about just straight terrorizing you.

Fatal Frame 2 is a very frightening game, but not to the degree of Fatal Frame 1 and 3 so I think that one is actually a good way to get into horror games. Fatal Frame 1 is overwhelmingly scary at times though lmao.

immersion therapy can be the best kind. i was for some reason very scared of the boxart for destroy all humans as a kid. eventually i just forced myself to look at the cover until i stopped caring

doesn't work for everybody but that's my two cents. maybe start small? yume nikki is not a scary game by any means it's basically just chill and trippy

Yume Nikki isn't even that scary, it's just very unsettling but has a unique charm to it

@MothLibrarian @bitterbatterdog
I've played other horror games (SH1, lot of REs) and the ones that aren't here are the ones I don't think I'll have any problems with like Gregory Horror Show, so I'm used to the controls and how these games feel I just have a really bad time thinking about playing the ones that seem really scary to me

@chandler
i've tried this many many times, like i said above i've played a fair share of them, even SH1 which was a good but miserable experience due to me breaking into a cold sweat at some point. it's mostly an anxiety thing (and i'm also really jumpy), i also have trouble with underwater (especially dark) segments in most 3D games even if it's Mario and i've tried so bad to keep trying and trying to get less scared with this games to no avail lol maybe i just need to try it more times...

also suggestion noted for Yume Nikki, i have an issue with disturbing imagery and scary sounds but i'll see what I can do with it...

yume nikki has a couple things that err on being disturbing but it generally just feels like something akin to lsd dream emulator

fear is one of those eye-of-the-beholder things anyway though. sh2 is the scariest thing on this list to me but most here would prolly say it's the least so. similar thoughts on snes clock tower

I've had the same issue with Fatal Frame, really want to try it but I get scared too easily.

My gf watches my horror playthroughs since she doesn't really like playing them for the same reason. Try not to play with headphones / in darkness, for me always helped play in a handheld or a laptop than the TV. Also my breakthrough to horror was in 2D, that might help. Also avoid first person view stuff for now.

Rule of Rose é bem de boa no terror

Eu nunca cheguei a jogar ele, apenas assistia walkthroughs no YouTube.

Corpse party me dá nostalgia pq assistia vídeos do Alanzoka jogando ele.

I'll say, I've only played the first fatal frame in full, some of 2, they aren't that scary. Maybe got a few jumps out of me but I think I was laughing more than I was scared.
