super fucking mario bros.
this fucking game
despite its reputation of being a classic, the only thing i can give this game points for is anything but the game design.

the gameplay and movement feel pretty alright. i can accomplish most of what I want to. though, i don't know if it's the game or something, but any device i've ever played this game on seems to drop inputs (namely jumps) from time-to-time, which is infuriating enough on the later levels. it feels just fine, regardless.

here's my main gripe: the game feels very arbitrary and artificially difficult. it's almost like some mechanics are just there to say "fuck you" or "this is the way it is because we said so". the timer ticks down way too fast. you can't backtrack. grabbing fire flowers as small mario reverts them to plain old mushrooms. getting hit as fire mario brings you back to small mario instantly. getting power-ups doesn't grant you invincibility frames. green paratroopas turn towards mario when hitting the ground for some reason. lakitu respawns, i guess. THE SPRINGS. i could go on with how many things are here that don't need to be. it's bad, it's really bad.

i went into this game saying "i won't use restore points."
then i went to "okay i'll only use them at the start of each world."
then to "okay at the start of each level."
"...okay i'll just do one in the middle of this level."
if you don't have a nostalgic bias, i guarantee you'll feel the same way. if not, then i'd believe you belong in some kind of psychiatric ward.

i don't mean to complain, i mean the game is pretty old and it still clings to arcade mechanics, but i can't say it holds up. all i can recommend to you is to play until you die, then drop it and never pick it up again. it isn't worth it.

spelunky 2 is good all-round.

i was never really one for ambient soundtracks, so i'm kind of disappointed that the bangin' style of the first game's ost didn't make a return. that's the note i'll start off with here.

the gameplay, like spelunky 1, is all there, if not more. the same emergent gameplay, traps, unforgiving difficulty, it's all back and spiffed up! love all that. the game also introduces branching paths as well, but, i'll be honest: why would you take jungle over volcana? or temple over tidepool? they all lead to the same path in the end, so taking the more difficult path is never really an option, unless you're looking for something specific from those areas. the choice seems obvious, so it really baffles me why it's a choice at all. i dunno, maybe i just don't get it?

other than that, the game is great. really fun to play with friends, so give it a shot!

personal gen 3 bias aside, i believe that pokemon peaked here. i think that pokemon heartgold and soulsilver were the best of the franchise. while the newer games aren't bad (most of them anyway), i think this was the one to truly give me the most joy i've ever felt with a pokemon game.

if you're looking for an entry point, i'd say this is it.

why are there two minecrafts

oh well, it's minecraft all the same... GOAT!

i haven't technically completed it yet. the final boss is super fucking hard.

PAPER MARIO AT ITS FINEST!!
that meaning it's the only one i've played... so far.
but boy, is this a jrpg you don't want to miss out on. if you're feeling a lack of interactivity in your jrpg experiences, then paper mario: the thousand year door will alleviate those qualms with simple mechanics and rewarding battles that will keep you engaged.
my favorite part of the game is, in comparison with other games in the franchise, a colorful cast of unique characters who travel alongside you (or against you) who always manage to capture my heart. older nintendo games had the guts to introduce tons new characters for these games, and it's the type of guts i like! gotta love it!
the game's funny, fun and filled with stuff to keep you entertained!
it's fucking TTYD!

who's the best mobile game that isn't an emulator? you are! you are! who's a good game? who's a good game???

if you need a simple game to pick up on the go when you're bored, this is it. get the birds and clans out of here. downwell is good for the soul

it's also on pc... but that version has a couple technical issues (loss of savefile, game won't boot up, low fps, etc). play on mobile, please!

yume nikki. i love you

it's not quite a game, but the aesthetic makes up for that. watching little 'yume nikki' madotsuki walk around in these little worlds invokes a feeling i haven't had in a long time.
i love to explore! hee hee!

bring back the "little fella walking in wacky worlds" genre!

BRING BACK THAT GOAT SHIT!!
PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES THE OG GOAT AND GOTY!!

quite honestly the best tower defense experience i've ever had. i like bloons, but it don't even step on my lawn when it comes to masterpieces like this.

if only popcap wasn't bought by EA...
if only, if only...

??? it's minecraft? what do i say other than that?

i didn't even play this game. i watched my friend play it.

one point for trying something new.
no points for whatever the fuck the game was doing past that.

you know what? i think i'm aged enough to say this game was just 'okay'.

i played this game during a time i'd get anything with kirby on it, but somewhere in-between then and now i convinced myself it was horrible because it "wasn't a kirby game"

well, that part's true technically, if you know the development history of the game.

looking back now with age though, i can see where i had my fun with it. by no means is it a true kirby experience, but i can respect what they wanted to do. it isn't too offensive, and it isn't perfect, but it's just okay.

i'll give this game points for what it set out to do, but compared to Kirby's Dreamland 3, Kirby's Dreamland 2 is like if they tried to make the same game but worse.

it deals with the problems that come with having a tiny Game Boy screen, that being enemies and projectiles come flying at you from off-screen. while Kirby's Dreamland 1 avoided this artificial difficulty by being relatively easy anyway, dreamland 2 comes at you with buckets of these ass-pulls.

the puzzles have no depth at all.
just pray you brought the right ability at the right time. even if you do, you also need the right animal friend too. what's that? lost your ability? oh well, play the level all over again.
100%-ing this game was an absolute nightmare.

just play dreamland 3

This is it. Action, shooting, roguelike.
It's peak. It's kino. Need a roguelike with fast-paced action?
Right here, it's all here. Nuclear Throne is the level of game design that I strive for.

Let's be serious. While The Binding of Isaac is certainly great as well, comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. This game isn't as deep as most other roguelikes, but I believe its simple charm strikes the perfect balance between fun, simple gameplay and complexity and challenge with pinpoint accuracy.

Other games like Enter the Gungeon just don't compare.
This game has SOUL.

I love Nuclear Throne.

kirby's dreamland 3. let's be honest.
i do really miss the puzzle-solving aspect of kirby games. the relegation of these features to mere 1-ups or collectible is just not enough. where the previous entry, kirby's dreamland 2, had more demanding and frankly ridiculous puzzles to solve, dreamland 3 here makes it more intuitive in finding out what you have to do. the puzzles follow a similar structure from world-to-world, and whenever you're in an important place the game is sure to make a little chime sound to tell you "hey, puzzle here!"
it's great, and i love solving puzzles with my abilities to help the little characters in this game. it's fun!
if they were to bring these puzzle elements into future games with the same combat mechanics we have now, i feel like 100%-ing kirby games would be 10x more fun.

let's not forget to talk about the music and design choice. i love to look at this game, and i love to listen to this game. it's soft, but it certainly knows how to look foreboding when it needs to be. i love it!

it's not your standard kirby game, but it's fun if you look at it with your head tilted. just give it a try!

kirby and the ermmmmm??? GOAT???
if future kirby games are like this, i totally wouldn't mind that. the gameplay is quite honestly an upgrade to the original formula. the bosses quite specifically, are the most fun fights i've had in quite a while. great stuff, right here
