When DOOM (2016) released, it was a breath of fresh air for the fps genre. Since then, the "boomer shooter" genre exploded in popularity, bringing about numerous high-quality games. DOOM Eternal had the insane task of following up the monumental success of DOOM (2016) -- and the mountain of games that 2016 had inspired.

DOOM Eternal succeeded.

I can't emphasize how adorable Cat & Soup's art style is: from the charming pencil-like aesthetic of the world to the lovable animations of your dress-up kitty workers. The music is calming, and the atmosphere makes for a great experience—until you realize there's not much "game" here.
Cat & Soup suffers from giving the player very little to do outside of watching tons of ads, which are the only way to progress, and even then, progression takes too long to be enjoyable. Understandably, it's a freemium game, but even the payable options don't remove the necessity to watch ads. Overall, if you don't mind watching mobile ads as a form of gameplay, I would not mind recommending "Cat & Soup: Ad Edition" to you. On the other hand, while it may not be as visually pleasing as this game, idle games like Cookie Clicker are more engaging and worth your time.

Doom

2016

Played this on my vanilla PS4 and it felt like my system was going to melt from the sheer awesomeness of this game. (I later upgraded to a Pro and it runs without any issues)

This is definitely a but of a rough and easy game in a lot of respects, but I still think that this is basically a masterpiece regardless and an absolutely hidden gem. There are few games I can think of that have been able to give me such a concentrated and extended amount of dopamine as this one has, but the charm combined with a selection of insanely creative and cool systems ended up barely leaving a moment where I wasn't grinning like a fool. For a fun, comfy sort of game, I also think that making it centred so heavily around the Dragon Quest slimes was an especially great choice because well, look at them!

Really most of what makes me appreciate this game so much is the fact that basically every aspect of it feels really, really clever in one way or another and manages to connect so many seemingly disparate elements into a really solid, easy to grasp gameplay loop that carries through the 12 or so hours it goes on for. Of these I think that the whole tank system is an especially awesome part of the game, both for how they work and the surprising amount of depth that can go into it, but also for the sheer spectacle. No matter how many times one of these tank battles would happen, I never got sick of controlling this 2 storey battle fortress and slowly destroying an enemy's equally massive battle fortress both from the inside and out. While it's not especially complex since this game was clearly targeted towards a relatively young audience, there's a lot of nuance to these encounters nonetheless, not only with your ammo choice, but also your crew and how you yourself interact with this lightly strategic real time battle.

This all ties nicely into the other half of the game, which is like a simplified take on the early top down Zelda titles but with some interesting twists on the formula, namely the carrying mechanic. Rather than having a wide array of tools at your disposal to use at any time, you instead can carry up to 3 items as a stack on your back, and these can be almost anything you find in the level. This not only can contribute to some neat puzzles here and there, but you can also choose to pick up what you find and transport it back to the city that acts as your home base, being able to recruit the enemies you've brought back into your party, and use the items you find as alchemy ingredients or even ammo for your tank. I love this idea because not only is this a really interesting, unconventional idea, to be able to take the raw items you find in the environment and use it as ammo, no matter what it is, but it also makes the game incredibly rewarding through and through, knowing that literally everything you find has another use that contributes to an ever strengthening repertoire.

While all of these above points would make for a very interesting game on its own, it's all wrapped up in a really comfy aesthetic, taking a selection of the cartoony Dragon Quest monsters, making them even smaller and cuter and then having a whole little goofy story with a lot of charming characters. Watching your village fill up with characters as the game progresses is absolutely lovely, and you can tell that there was some time dedicated to a lot of smaller details to really flesh things out. The fact that each of the approximately 120 NPCs in the town feel as if they have some distinct characteristic along with having entirely separate dialogue for if you decide to attack them is only one of the many extra tidbits Rocket Slime has to really flesh out the experience way beyond what one might expect from this little DS spin off title.

Regardless of how easy this game is (because frankly there were only 2 instances where I felt at all threatened), this is still a fantastic little game that is so full of charm and heart, and it's one that I could definitely see myself returning to in the future because it's so happy and comfy while also not being quite like any other game I've played. Highly recommend giving this a shot as long as you keep in mind that it is rather simplistic in a fair few ways, which might leave some people bored if they're looking for a consistent challenge, even if some post game stuff is nasty enough to really make you consider cool strategies and the like. Kinda wish this was the Dragon Quest spin off that got some more entries rather than the Monsters one, even though those games were pretty good as well.

Brilliant, simply brilliant. This game fixed every issue I had with Yakuza 3 and then adds onto it with it's amazing story. The atmosphere in this was unbelievable, while the soundtrack only makes it a hundred times better. Really enjoyed the new addition of 4 different perspectives, with the finale being especially amazing. Can't wait to start 5 soon!

This VN absolutely demolished me. It is the kind of deep creative work that I want to analyze over and over again, and so far the only other piece of media that has done something similar to me is Revolutionary Girl Utena. This is one of the best examples of queer storytelling that exists, and I love it to bits.

It's fun until you find most of what the game has to offer then it quickly gets frustrating trying to find the last few clues. I will still say it's good since I enjoyed the majority of it, but it's not the kind of game I'd ever even consider playing again.

Honestly life changing. Totally shifted my perspective of what a video game is. The music, the art, the story...all chef's kiss perfection. Wish I could play this again for the first time.

This game kicks ass, endlessly replayable and easy to pick up but a little too random at times because duh it's all based on dice rolls. You can always restart a battle by quitting to the title screen which has saved me many hours when trying to complete all of the episodes. The ending sequence is really fun and I just love the style this game has with its exceptional art and music.

I think it says a lot about a game's charm and playability that not even a cheesy, if sometimes charming, discount-Animaniacs localization, the lack of invincibility frames, sparse chances to buy equipment, or backtracking can stop this game from being a total blast. Granted, I would like a remake that solves all of that.

if i play another game that has a really cool and solid concept but it is a roguelike so it is destined to be repetitive and short, I think I am going to explode
While I love the game, the roguelike concept does NOT mesh well with the fact that a lot of your runs can take up to 3-4 hours (not because the game is long, but because the combat is turn based and highly strategic, so you'll be thinking a lot) and dying feels extremely bad because you the progress you make outside of runs is very underwhelming, and you'll feel like you wasted all those hours on literally nothing.
I so, so badly wish this game was just a full, fledged game with a proper story that concluded instead of never ever concluding because of its roguelike nature and the characters constantly repeating dialogue you have heard a billion times because it is a roguelike.
It could have been a 15-25 hours game with actual new content to explore, new characters to meet, a progressing story that concludes and does not reset itself and its progression every time you win/lose and I would probably have less hours on it then I do now, but I would 100% enjoy those hours I spent way more.
Hades could make it work, but that is Hades; and even Hades runs did not take more than an hour at best.
I love love LOVE the pixel art this game has, the animations, the extremely unique turn based combat system that is actually really fun to play, but you can only go through the same 4 levels and kill the same enemies and same bosses so many times with near zero variety before you get burnt out.
I appreciate that they are still updating the game and listening to the community, but I can't see myself going back and playing through many new runs just because they added a single new level or a single new boss

The population manager and council delegator parts are very interesting and kept me intrigued and playing.

The RTS portion was awful.

"Listen, babe, do you believe when I say?"

I wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy this game. The first time playing this game was a very fun experience, I liked trying to figure people out, I enjoyed being totally fooled by some of the deaths and I ended up beating it in about 10 hours.

What I didn't expect was how much I would enjoy watching others play this. This is one of my most watched games on twitch because unfortunately it's not a game you can replay so the next best thing is watching others figure it out for the first time. Watching it being solved nearly 10-15 times by other people I've found so many more clues than I even thought existed. There is so much packed into this game that I simply missed the first time around.

I hope someday there will be another game like this because I need more of it in my life.
