My GOTY every year

My choice for GOTY, every year that I have one.

2023 - A game that perfectly touched my love of Dungeons & Dragons and adapted it to a video game with impeccable storytelling and RPG systems.
2022 - A continuation of the greatest game of all time, what's not to love?
2021 - Weak year overall at the top, no real big hitter like in some previous years. It Takes Two was great fun with my gf and made for what felt like a Pixar video game stylistically, not so much story wise lol.
2020 - Fantastic game with an amazing, addictive gameplay experience. Narrative is masterfully woven into the game design and roguelike genre. Loved it.
2019 - RE2 is a masterful remake with world class level design, the RPD is a fantastic puzzle to explore and uncover. Mr. X had me wanting to shit my pants. RE is one of the only franchises that gets inventory management right.
2018 - I wrote a lot more about God of War in my review of it, but this is my favorite game of all time. Just the peak of AAA gaming.
2017 - BOTW was my first Zelda love, the first Zelda I ever played was Wind Waker and I never really cared for the series. The sense of exploration just worked in this game, I love it.
2016 - If you asked me today, in 2022 the year of our lord, I'd say I like Uncharted 4 more. BUT that is only because I fucking loved Overwatch for so long and played soooo many hours that I've just burned myself out on it so much. It was my GOTY at the time, and still is, due to the many hours of fun I've gotten out of this game.
2015 - The Witcher III is the most epic RPG there has ever been. I'm not normally an RPG kinda guy, but this game was different. My favorite cast of characters in a game ever. Amazing experience. And the best expansions in gaming.
2014 - It's a little cheatsy because Destiny became much better after The Taken King released, in 2015. Still though, I had so much fun in this game, Destiny is my favorite online franchise ever. Satisfying gameplay loop, lots of loot, amazing raids.
2013 - An amazing story. Gameplay better than the Uncharted series or something like The Witcher, but not amazing. Any deficiencies are made up for by that damn story though. Whew.
2012 - The first and only game to make me cry. I still can't believe a damn point and click game was my GOTY, but what an amazing story. And 2012 is probably the weakest year of gaming... ever. Easy sweep for TWD.
2011 - The game that got me back into gaming after a rough slump of nothing but CoD and Madden. Ingenious and hilariously creative, I adore Portal 2.
2010 - As mentioned in the 2011 section, I did not really love gaming back then. I was all in on CoD and Madden. Black Ops was a good CoD though, but I need to play some more games from 2010 that I haven't yet, like ME2 or Red Dead 1.
2009 - The best Pokemon game, an amazing experience being able to through two regions and 16 gyms, plus Red the final boss. Even my favorite non battle mechanic in your Pokemon following you.
2008 - One of the best Pokemon games. Fast paced gameplay and fantastic region.
2007 - The beginning of the fantastic CoDs.
2006 - One of my weaker choices. Didn't play many games other than Pokemon from back then. Great gen.
2005 - A true classic with innovative gameplay and enjoyable camp.
2004 - The first game I ever played. My first love!
2003 - Retroactive GOTY. Loved loved loved playing this on the 'Cube with my friends.
2002 - Retroactive GOTY. Played Ruby later on and loved it. Too much water though, IGN was right!
2001 - Retroactive GOTY. Had so much fun playing with friends as a kid.
1996 - The classic.
