The closest I've come to the feeling I got from Portal all those years ago.

Quite simply one of the greatest Metroidvainias ever.

It's influences are obvious but it's weighed down by the faults of those game instead of improving on the source material - the checkpoints in particular are brutal.

A game that wears its influences on its sleeve but can never reach the heights set by the likes of Thousand-Year Door or Origami King.

But it is an incredibly charming world and I was compelled to reach the end. Sits below the aforementioned titles but way higher than Color Splash or Sticker Star.

2020

It sticks the landing but quickly loses its appeal due to repetitive gameplay and a relatively barren world to explore.

A visual tour de force but if you haven't enjoyed R&C games in the past there's not much here that will change your mind. If you do enjoy the R&C series you'll have a blast.

With that said, I did have two hard crashes while trying to play on fidelity mode.

The first 15 minutes where you're creating your skatebird? GOTY material. The moment you start having to actually skate? It's worse than THPS5.

Other than a bit of PS2-era platforming clunkiness that pops up every now and again, Psychonauts 2 is a non-stop journey of imagination and creativity.

There's a ton of callbacks to the original that will go over anyone starting with 2, but the game does a solid job bringing people up to speed. A solid recommendation for 2021.

The type of game I want to slap GAME DESIGN on the front of and make every game developer play.

Fiendishly clever use of simple mechanics and at the end the only genuine critique I could make was that I wanted more. Absolutely essential.

Some questionable plot twists and slight graphical hitches aside, Metroid Dread is an excellent addition to the 2D Metroid series.

The control scheme that caused my hand to cramp on multiple occasions on the 3DS works so much better on the Switch, the boss fights are spectacular and challenging, the EMMI sections give full reward to the 'Dread' title, and Samus just whips ass.

The plot may leave your head frazzled if you've never played a Metroid game, but the minute-to-minute gameplay will more than makeup for it.

At times I was enthralled with Eastward, but it's just too slow, too overwritten, and overall lacks enough compelling gameplay ideas to keep my attention after nearly 25 hours in with what seems like many more to go. I want to finish it but the game simply isn't giving me enough motivation to do so.

2021

Loved the style of it but the gameplay felt lacking.

A fine, fine tribute to the GBA and a killer soundtrack to boot.

2021

A thoroughly enjoyable experience that is slightly hampered by its limited gameplay.

An aggressively OK Metroidvania. Looks great but its level design feels incredibly lethargic in a post-Hollow Knight world.
