It's a (almost shamelessly so) Hades inspired roguelike. The gameplay is top notch, with loads of metaprogression, good combat and overall game feel. Boss fights are the particular standout with each one being super unique and fun to learn. What is less good as everything dealing with the writing/story of the game. It tries to do the Hades thing with worldbuilding and storytelling that evolves on each run, but the characters aren't compelling enough, the writing isn't sharp enough and the voice acting ranges from "ok" to not great. That said, I enjoyed my time with the game wholeheartedly. I ended up seeing the credits roll and beating the true final boss after about 11 hours, but I'll probably continue playing it on and off.

There's too much for me to say about this game to write it all in a review. If you like this style of JRPGS, just play the game. Preferably going into it knowing as little as possible.

it's 2-3 hours more of control (cool.) that connects to alan wake (very cool!) with one of the most dogshit final bosses i've' seen in a videogame (less cool.)

i'm excited to try alan wake 2, now.

It sure is 3 or so more hours of control.

yeah it's ok. i love the world and the atmosphere, but found the overall story to be lacking. gameplay is fine, but feels jank in some places. i spent most combat throwing shit at enemies and killing them rather quickly. the big moments (ashtray maze) didn't quite land for me, but i still had fun overall.

I don't understand some of the overwhelming praise I've read about this game. It's definitely not a bad game, (I liked it enough to get 100%, at least) but the level design and enemy variety leaves a lot to be desired overall. Boss fights are mostly great except for like one, and I like how the combat works. Art, music and atmosphere are all top notch as well.

I enjoyed the mechanics, the overall gameplay and the monster design. I wish the battles had a speedup feature, the story/characters didn't endear me in any meaningful way (i like eugene because he says momentous) and I wish I couldn't beat almost every story boss by abusing a tanky grass type and leech.

It's more wargroove. I like the new mechanics and the level design is better but I can't help but feel the game ends with a wimper and not letting you use the old music for custom content is criminal.

why is this both longer and better than the re3 remake lol

What would have been easily my Game of The year is marred by a plethora of issues that happened to me in the last third of the game. Framerate tanking, graphical glitches, crashes, weird quest progression etc etc. As impressive as the game is (and it is quite impressive!) Act 3 definitely feels like it's held together by duct tape and paperclips and you can feel the game start to crumble a bit beneath the weight of everything it's trying to do. That said, outside of those flaws, this game goes crazy. The amount of interesting, unique and fun content in this game is absurd.

It's fun, albeit a bit straightforward and simplistic. The game nails the aesthetic and music, and there's bouts of cool level design throughout. It's pretty short, but there's a fair amount of content if you're willing do it; multiple characters, collectibles and secrets to find etc. I just didn't find myself super compelled to find or do that stuff.

They put hell house in as a boss.
I like the combat, the music is great, and for the most part I think they did a good job at expanding the midgar stuff into it's own game outside of the few moments where the developers were very clearly trying to pad the playtime.

2021

Better than the original in almost every way. Sick pixel art instead of whatever 20xx had. More level variety, better end game, more interesting progression, better boss fights (though some of the last stage fight can get a bit psycho) There's a greater emphasis on meta-progression. (A lot of the systems in this regard feel like they were very heavily inspired by Hades.)
