Mission: Return to the City

Thoughts: For context this is a new Thief fan mission campaign that aims to be a successor to the original. It has intros with lovingly made drawing and street views just like the og games, some ok music in the similar industrial sound of the first few games, and has a whole new protagonist named Hume. Aside from his voice actor sounding like he's gonna ejaculate every time he grunts he's got a pretty strong voice for the role.

The way this game uses darkness and sound is pretty scary. Not so much in the sense that it's some 4D audio experience that'll give you the ability to hear every dust particle hit the ground and smell the horrifying boy musk, but more so in it's lack of detail. This game uses a boomer shooter style in gameplay, and from what I can gather there are some built in limitations, one of which being limited sprite animations. This can give monsters a sort of walking through water feel, that is quite omniums to say the least. Something that is even more creepy is the still statues and suits of armor that jut abruptly from angle to angle as you view it from different points. This can be pretty fucking startling when many of these humanoid figures are alluded to being alive in some way. Add onto that you are often drenched in near complete darkness, and a still figure can be the most freaking thing in the world.

Vibes, goth gamer vibes

This game is pretty cool lookin' based off the intro cutscene and starting menu. Although, in true old ass pc game fashion it took about an hour before I could find a way to remap the buttons to WASD. Would've gotten it a lot sooner if the only path to fix it didn't cause such terrible screen tearing! But alas I was able to rebind the buttons through an admittedly archaic but serviceable method (Praise Dos config!). I have a friend waiting on me, but I'll pick this up later with proper controls, well, as proper as you can get with a game like this.
