Games that are better without voice

Or a game that is unique because it has no voice. A game made mediocre by the addition of voices. Voice acting sometimes kills the expression itself and the imagination on the part of the player. This is not to say that all games should not be voiced, but that voicing is not necessarily a good thing in terms of representation in games.

Note: The idea is limited to the JP ver. Non-Japanese language ver suggestions are also acceptable.
Alternative Plan:
1. Substitute AI for all voice actors. As in Catherine's narration.
2. Turn off all voice settings in the configuration lol.
3. Change to a voice other than the native language, e.g. French.
4. Game creators prepares a completely original language. E.g. Ueda Fumito.

Excellent list as always LSW! I completely agree sometimes it's better to leave the voices to the player's imagination; the voices can also kill the pace of reading for me, if it's heavily a text-based game like a visual or sound novel. It's just awkward to hold on a text box and wait for the voice to finish when I'm a pretty fast reader.

I'm not sure how they sounded it the Japanese version, but I hated the voices they added to the later ports of Zero Escape / Extreme Escape: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. It worked much better without voices and the actors they got were terrible, in my opinion

@ReadOnlyMuseum "the voices can also kill the pace of reading for me, if it's heavily a text-based game like a visual or sound novel. It's just awkward to hold on a text box and wait for the voice to finish when I'm a pretty fast reader."
I completely agree with you. Voice availability is a common topic of conversation among Japanese gamers. I made the list because I wanted to visualise the dilemma-like feeling I had every time. Oh, and in the case of Japan, one of the complaints may be that there has been a failure to change generations of voice actors. Idolisation and impersonalisation of voice actors...... If you just want to convert text into speech, you don't need actors. I also think we should let machines do it.
Anyway, thank you for your suggestion! Zero Escape has been added to the list.

Great list and I definitely agree with 999. This is similar to the discussion some people often bring up "why should I read the book if it has a movie adaptation?"

For me there's value in both but no other medium leaves so much to your imagination as books do and there's beauty in that. (the same reason I tend to skip introductions in books, especially if by a different author)

I tend to find point 'n' click adventure games less funny and charming when there's a voice track. They always seem much drier and understated in my head, while the actors' interpretations are typically much more broad and wacky. I think a lot of them approach them like cartoons.
Once the option became available, I switched to playing Breath of the Wild with the French audio, because I'm not very familiar with the language, and I like the thought of Hyrule as a romantic foreign country with a mysterious and exciting history. Hearing the cast speak English, with familiar accents and dialects, really took away a lot of the fantasy for me. I don't like to think I'm stubbornly holding onto outdated conventions, regarding the idea of voice acting in a Zelda game, but I'm pretty confident I'd have enjoyed the story segments a lot more if they'd just stuck with the old dialogue boxes.

I think voice acting in games often has the unfortunate side-effect of making you realise how silly and childish a lot of video game storytelling is. Like 87th said, my inner voice works to give everything a serious bent, lol. Have found the same thing when watching English dubs of shonen anime...

So much of how I feel about dubs has been reflected in the list and the comments already, this is so reassuring.
All too often I find myself only hearing the first word or two of the actual line before I confirm into the next dialogue box. I'm with @87th in their switching dub languages to fit the setting wherever possible. There are so many games where hearing certain interpretations of the writing's tenor, or even just a modern American accent makes me want to immediately shut it off lol. It's less about leaving things to interpretation for me and more about variety, I guess... It's very rare for a voice director to want to shy away from anime/cartoon cadence.
Disagree with 999, I loved every VA. I hear people dislike the nocturne remaster voices and say they damper the atmosphere of the game

All the recent Yakuza games are sooooooo weird with the English dubs. Also the Tactics Ogre remakes new voices are pretty dire and feel EXTREMELY wrong just on principle

I remember playing persona 4 without voices because I didn't want to be embarrassed for playing a game with anime girls telling me how sexy I am. Good times

@mutyumu "why should I read the book if it has a movie adaptation?" It is a topic that is likely to cause a storm lol.
"Why do we need to anime when the game is expressing it well enough?" I feel this is a similar topic.

@87th I thought Zelda audio was a unknown language like ICO, but everything was changed to dubbed in BotW. I didn't know... Maybe this is a typical example of how making everything phonetic is not always a good outcome. Thank you to suggestion. BotW added.

@letshugbro Japanese voice actors may have given childish performances and the English dubbing may have been influenced by this. Some say, and there may be a certain rightness to this, "because children watch and play too," but I think the opposite is true. "Do not underestimate the sensitivity of children."

@BeachEpisode I thought I was the only one with the complaints listed in this list as I despair of Japanese voice actors. However, it is unexpected that some people in English-speaking countries are also dissatisfied. Well, maybe it is not just the voice actors and localisation issues, but the medium of gaming itself that is causing problems too.

@NOWITSREYNTIME17 "Objection!" to Zero Escape! added. Shin Megami Tensei III was rejected, invoking the authority of the list creator, due to the possibility of a comment war.

@DJSCheddar Tactics Ogre Reborn added. But Yakuza reject.

@HylianBran P4 and P4G are rejected. And by the way, P3 and P5 are automatically rejected.

Strongly disagree about Super Mario Advance. Mouser's "here, have some BOMBS!" is one of video game voice acting's greatest achievements.

Post Morrowind Bethesda games writing became a lot simpler and shorter once they were fully voiced, the abysmal number of voice actors who work on these giant projects doesn't help immersion either.

Triangle Strategy is in the same vain as Tactics Ogre - an old school tactical game about extreme long shot isometric chibi characters - hearing them talk is more jarring than immersive. The voice work is also below average at best for a modern game.

@letshugbro I like it too because it brings a calmness and humour to the discussion, like when you are playing Ace Attorney. (Both those who disagreed with the opinion and those who were disagreed with it.) It would be interesting if Backloggd operators incorporated this into their comment system? ...If the debate flares up further I will have to get down on my knees(土下座/dogeza), though lol. By the way, I recently found out about this video, which is very good.
