30 Day Video Game Music Challenge [2023]

Something I like to do at the end of the year to see what changes as I play more games __φ(..)
Sorry this one is a bit late!

2022 List

Following this: https://imgur.com/aGSVjXC

Day 1: Title screen music
"Title Theme"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOn5JBn15Zg
No, I'm not joking. Yes, this beat Dearly Beloved. Sorry, not sorry.
Day 2: Opening level music
"Beginning"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptgaCJSF7j8
Best song from a "first level" almost automatically means an older game, at least in my mind. Unless you're playing an arcade game, most home games don't really have levels much now do they? Or maybe I'm just being a stoned idiot that's forgetting shit so I have an excuse to shake my non-existent cane at something.
Well, anyways, I do still love Pollyanna, but I do have to give credit when credit is due, and Akumajou Densetsu rightfully is famous for its killer music, especially in its opening level.
Day 3: 8-Bit music
"Snowman"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFpbJS0ALDE
Well, it took me only a total of... one day to give Mother a different spot on this challenge lmao. Snowman is a gorgeous song that understandably is one of the few continuously kept throughout the Mother series.
Day 4: Game from a console exclusive series
"Rainy Day"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpSjGQqQ4i0
I never understand this question. Do they mean like a game series that was specifically on one console (which I can't really think of one because series usually last long enough to be on more than one console generation), or one that's known to be specific brand console-only, like Halo with Xbox? Well, whatever. Here's the original Animal Crossing, a game made solely for GameCube (and N64 in Japan but shush) for a series made by Nintendo only for Nintendo consoles (unless you count the phone games I guess..?)

Just don't think about it too much. It's a nice song anyways!
Day 5: Hub world or overworld music
"FFII Overworld"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGon-8yS9xI
Very gorgeous, very somber. Creates an emotional response the longer you play and the more you learn about the story.
Day 6: Music that makes me you feel relaxed
"Level 9"
https://youtu.be/5dA5ynP-j-I?si=AU4MWzpH9mjRSzLJ
My favorite in the entire game OST, which is all very nice. I know it's the CD-i but go check it out. Trust me. Please.
Day 7: Music from an indie game
"BIG SHOT"
https://youtu.be/uivFFnCI8tM?si=iH-bvQy0S5prAWkR
Sorry, Megalovania.
Day 8: Music from a shooter
"Back to China"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1obJ1Ek6Xk
There's probably better songs in the series, but this is the first one that always jumps first to mind.
Day 9: Music from a licensed game
"The Moon Theme"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF32DRg9opA
I haven't really played a lot of licensed games, and I'm sure as hell not putting Tiny Toons Adventure over DuckTales.
Day 10: RPG battle music
"Battle Awakening Theme"
https://youtu.be/NJfIFzAKR7k?si=XUnwtr67c8XUhXSb
This song is only used with the whole heartbeat build up once I think in the game, but HOLY SHIT - it's the best part, and is an EXCELLENT example for why I'm annoying about the music in Persona 1.
Day 11: Puzzle game music
"Pressing Pursuit - Cornered"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxqnm2M4xC0
Not the strongest in the Ace Attorney series, but absolutely the strongest in its cornered theme.
Day 12: Song that makes you sad
"Dreams of Shores Near Another World
https://youtu.be/EbeeMm9LQSM?si=ksB5_PaaPQLZO5rx
Maybe emotional is a better word than sad for this song, but it's easily my first choice, and is a song that goes way back for me... from even before I played Chrono Cross 。゚・ (>﹏<) ・゚。

Day 13: Music you like from a game you don't like
"Absolute Despair Girl"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vATlONpoS1I
Ugh.
Day 14: Music featuring vocals
"Miller Ball Breakers"
https://youtu.be/RkVOnU16BMY?si=Gs4262Ax0AfNnDvE
There's definitely songs with more varied and clear lyrics, but Miller Ball Breakers has to be the one I listen to the most.

Anyways... The scratch, the bass, the cougars in your face! The king of the beat is gonna rock the place!
Day 14: Boss battle music
"Never to Return"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1k5SCCN1sk
The gorgeous song that plays whenever you fight a "boss" to send one of your teammates to safety. Now go... and rise again.
Day 16: 16-Bit music
"Corridors of Time"
https://youtu.be/BXo3DrXHY8w?si=8dL75qtNpgdLTs8h
There's so many good 16-bit songs it's crazy!! It's hard to choose, and I already used a lot of games for different answers in this list, but Chrono Trigger's Corridors of Time seems a good fit, as it made me very emotional when first running into it, playing the game completely blind.
Day 17: Music you never get tired of
"Morrowind Theme Song"
https://youtu.be/nJD-Ufi1jGk?si=p-nDf8u_QJj4KsKY
And you better not get tired of it, because it's going to be one of 3 songs in this game that you hear over and over and over and over and ov-
Day 18: Music in a game released the year you were born
"Gerudo Valley"
https://youtu.be/SFwEa56SXSo?si=U8A4nQa77R8VEPx9
1998 babies are lucky to get one of the most musically famous Zelda games ヽ(´ー` )┌
Day 19: Cover of music by different artist
"Maya's Theme - Atsushi Kitajoh's Rearranged Version"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UUlE-n_AFU
Ehhh, sorry to do the same series twice in this list, but can you blame me!
Day 20: Music from a racing game
"Today"
https://youtu.be/9rZ9X_QvIlQ?si=twaW5MvIorGoTJ2z
I still have played only one non-Mario racing game in my life lol, but this song fucks, trust me.
Day 21: Music you associate with frustration
"Special Stage"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWvuTyFysFg
They tried but this awful mini-game with this awful song is just so much, and in combination with all the BINGBINGBINGBINbing bing bing WOOOooooooo-

Just get me out.
Day 22: Town/village music
"Calling"
https://youtu.be/GRh139jrXwo?si=G8adr3nSGdRjrZnv
Ah yes, the lovely tune that plays when you're running around the small, humble town of Shibuya lmfao. Funny how the second I put a song with terrible vocals as my favorite song with vocals that I start filling this list with songs with great vocals.
Day 23: Underrated music
"Metal 2 (Olimar)"
https://youtu.be/-W4GsWb17DU?si=NpqV8MTRyDeMOQNW
I feel the music is Pikmin 2 is overshadowed a bit from the music in Pikmin 1. Here is my favorite song that I feel I never hear anyone ever talk about.
Day 24: Music you have constantly stuck in your head
"Lonely Rolling Star"
https://youtu.be/7_QydNXI_ok?si=O3JBRqYgZvycx8wY
A classic. There's definitely other songs I get stuck in my head more, but I used them for other categories in this list. Lonely Rolling Star is definitely still up there, though, as I always like to listen to the original Katamari soundtrack when I do my laundry (⌒ω⌒)
Day 25: Music that gets you pumped
"Act 4 Part 2"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2LF2t4YlBI
I always find a way to sneak this fucker in.
Day 26: Music you like from a game you haven't played
"Beware the Forest's Mushrooms"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iudB3TreJfM
You thought I would forget about you, little miss Forest Mushroom!? Still one of my favorite 16-bit songs, but unfortunately I have never played Super Mario RPG o(>< )o
Day 27: Music from a handheld game
"Menu"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD0RfwXKkbY
I'M NOT INSANE, PLEASE, THIS SHIT JUST HITS SO RIGHT.
Day 28: Music that makes you nostalgic
"Casino Night Zone"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gw7A3Ao7Y8
Well, I had to use the Sonic series twice because it was either that, or using THIS and I sure as hell do not remember the Tunnel Runner music fondly at ALL. This is what happens when you grow up with one good game on the Genesis and then a game console with games that didn't even have any music!!
Day 29: Final boss battle
"Snake Eater"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDY-PxP-2CU
This song is used throughout the whole game, but this rendition is used when you're fighting The Boss... damn...
Day 30: Credits Music
"Joyride"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3Lvm1tv1mE
This was one of my top songs on my Spotify rewind this year lmfao
