Personal GOTYs

From 1998-2022
Decisions made based on enjoyment as a kid and appreciation I have for them after playing them as an adult

1998
Played as an adult, honestly think it holds up extremely well for a ps1 game.
1999 Played this both as a kid and as an adult and I still truly dont understand how to beat the game, but nothing ever beat watching my digimon poop
2000
one time i was in daycare and one of the sitters let me use a kid's pokemon crystal, and i saved over his save not knowing better and i regret it to this day
2001
All time favorite, never forget my dad selling my memory card and I would keep my ps2 on for days trying to beat the game before it turned off..ive seen the beginning of this game so many times now but it never got old once
2002
this game is magical to me as a kid and adult idc how corny this game is
2003
played this as an adult, definitely the scariest one for me, i love heather
2004
travelled overseas and back during the third grade and it was a very chaotic time but this would distract me from all the stress
2005
back in middle school i would bring 2 ds consoles on the bus and would challenge kids to a race in this game every day
2006
mmorpg but as a single player game, the gambit combat system is extremely unique and i wish more games tried this out
2007
multiple summers would be spent playing this game in my gamer basement owning kids in valhalla
2008
perfecting this game was extremely fun and satisfying
2009
the perfect pokemon game
2010
ive never laughed so hard from a video game before
2011
i tried this in high school and hated it, tried it again in college and became obsessed
2012
my introduction to fire emblem games, honestly think it did everything perfect in terms of satisfying old fans while attracting new ones
2013
Very funny but also very good coop puzzle platformer
2014
my intro to mh games, it was incredibly fun to come home from school and immediately hop on skype to talk to the boys and hunt some guys
2015
admittedly did not like the game at first, took me 3 attempts before i finally got hooked and fell in love, the aesthetic of the game is great
2016
the perfect souls game, even if it canonically follows after ds1, i would recommend this first to anyone wanting to get into the series
2017
i moved during this year, and i suddenly had to commute by train for college everyday, so i got a switch and this game and this made transitioning to this kind of commute a breeze and even a pleasure
2018
The first game I played where it truly felt like I was playing something that was a one of a kind experience. The game is beautiful, and the all the small little details that would happen to the world while hunting a monster truly felt like I was hunting a monster and not just another gamey experience if that makes any sense
2019
are you kidding me i cant believe it
2020
despite the world falling apart ive never been more cozy than when i wake up, hop onto discord and talk to my friends about ac and hopping onto each others islands everyday for a few weeks. made going through the pandemic a little easier
2021
World is one of my favorite games, so any mainline MH that comes out after it I can't help but compare them. I would say this both a watered down but more refined experience. The world/atmosphere doesn't mean much here, but it makes up for it with an extremely polished combat system and updates to old weapons. Basically a boss fight simulator
2022
i honestly dont remember playing any other game that came out in 2022 aside from this guy
2023
Sequel to a game I love, it's quite literally better than the first in every way. Only thing I wish for is more character interactions, but otherwise perfect
