idk if it's considered spoilers at this point (it's just a sidequest in the second zone), but ff7 rebirth has a whole dealie where you get sucked into the ford condor board game. never finished the quest so idk its whole deal but pretty sure it'd count. i wanna say something that'd absolutely count happens in one or multiple of the DQ titles, but i cant remember which one or how. an edge case might be link's awakening?

oh! sorry for double post but i remembered, it happens in DQ11 when the party gets sucked into a mural

Great list!!

Dreamscaper is a game where you go into your own dreams. Not sure if that would count as "fictional" though...?

The realm of Apocryhpa is a world added in Skyrim's Dragonborn expansion. Again I'm not clear if this qualifies since I'm not sure to what degree it's "fictional," but you do enter it by reading a book; I always assumed it was a 100 Acre Wood situation but reading the wiki makes it seem like it's just another place.

That's... all I have apparently. I went through my whole list thinking this was more of a trope and I could find a bunch of them, but I come to you with only these paltry offerings. I didn't play enough of it to know for sure but don't one or all of the Alan Wake games have this as a mechanic? Anyway great list idea!

Also I think some or all of the Sword Art Online games might fit for this but again I haven't played enough to say for sure.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is pretty much like Mario 64 in the sense that you go into paintings which can be considered to be their own worlds

@theia yeah i was going to add Rebirth but i kinda decided against it so i would spoil people so soon lol

but omg i was trying so hard to remember that DQ one too thanks!!!

@cowboyjosh
yeah i'm avoiding "dreams" and "psychological spaces" like in Persona because that's not really what i'm looking for. but apocrypha seems to be a book in itself so i'll add it! also Alan Wake does qualify yeah

For NieR, you also go inside the diaries in the DLC stuff

@Archagent aaah i've never done DLC so i didn't know that!

kkkkk... dragon ball xenoverse

A few suggestions for the list:

Super Bullet Break is a classic "sucked into a videogame" situation.

The setting of CrossCode is a VR MMO, but the game world and everything in it is hosted on an actual moon. That is to say, the virtual world exists on top of, and interacts with the real world. You could go to that place in real life and see players running around and doing game stuff.

Would Disgaea item worlds count as fictional worlds?

@totolecc mds como que é isso??

@Westrep For CrossCode VR is a step removed from what i'm looking for and i'm looking more for something where the world is alive on it's own even without external input (or minimal)

for Disgaea i don't consider the item world to fall into any type of artistic fiction so i wouldn't add it

Lots of digimon games.
Digimon World 1 starts by being sucked into the world
Digimon World 3 starts by entering a VR world
Digimon Cyber Slueth (+ Hacker's Memory) have a VR Space that the Digimon Invade
I don't remember the rest but I think both DS games also do this, maybe

Danganronpa V3

The game Princess Crown is set entirely in a story book that an old woman is reading to her granddaughter. Getting a game over is referred to as "falling from the book world"

Gex as a series has Gex enter TV worlds.

Not sure if this fits the criteria exactly but from what I recall, the entirety of Super Mario Bros 3 is a stageplay acted out within the Mario universe.

@ZapRowsdower oh yeah i can't believe i forgot Gex!!!

@Fizza that's a tiny bit removed from what i'm looking for i feel like, but it's a weird one to think about for sure

Danganonpa V3 is THE fiction in fiction game

Fun idea for a list! I think the Hello Charlotte games fit pretty well into this category, using a TV as a portal to its other worlds

Hello Charlotte 3 is also incredibly explicit about it, to put it as vague as possible

Seeing Gex next to Princess Crown is like psychic damage
Good list

In Mario Party 3, they literally go inside a Mario Party board game that becomes alive

@DoctorIssa which one? i'm not that well-versed in simpsons games is it the movie one?
