favorite gaming youtubers

first three are my favorite three, rest are just in a random order. would love to hear other recs or just general yt discussion!

Sega Lord X

would not be into games like I am today without this guy. one of the best sources of what it was like to experience sega's heyday and how to appreciate their style of game design. ridiculous amount of content uploaded too
Stop Skeletons From Fighting

the amount of research derek and grace put into these videos is top-notch. I find out about new peripherals, insane ports, or bizarre features from these guys every time I watch their stuff
Modern Vintage Gamer

I have a computer engineering background and really enjoy technical deep-dives on games, and MVG has that in spades with his coverage of emulation history, piracy techniques, hacking guides, and gaming spec analysis. manages to make his videos appealing to casual viewers as well as detail-rich
strafefox / SplashWave

uploads very rarely but has documentary-level videos on the development of many clasic 8-bit and 16-bit games. his production abilities are entirely on another level, and his research is top-notch
onaretrotip

I don't watch his newer stuff as much but his cancelled games and arcade exclusives series are top-notch stuff
Ahoy

great mix of looks at single games or series while also having interesting deconstructive videos on game mechanics, common weapons, and gaming tech
Retro Game Mechanics Explained

these videos make me feel like I'm doing classwork but god are they so well done. essential stuff for fans of homebrew and speedrunning
Snoman Gaming

great gaming design analysis that's very mechanics-focused, and very comfy to watch as well. making this list made me realize that he's now inactive...
Hard4Games

mostly news-oriented, but it's news around rare prototypes and such and they always have extensive video documentation as well
Lunatic J

I was wondering who he was and why he was in my subs until I looked at his videos; I mostly know his stuff through my roommate putting it on. wide variety of speedrunning content, and I highly recommend the new OoT Brawl Demo speedrun history
Summoning Salt

to the surprise of virtually no one. without this man popularizing documentary-length speedrun histories, my roommates and I would've spent some very bored nights in front of the tv
SNES drunk

so many obscure japanese 16-bit games, so little time
PandaMonium

first found him through his Reviewing Every US Saturn Game series. he bounces between stuff but I love the depth of his content
CloudConnection

I don't think I've really watched a lot of his stuff but he's got great longer-form retrospectives
Wrestling With Gaming

great infotainment. I found him after his Neo Geo retrospective and haven't been able to stop watching
GamezOfWar

so many obscure jrpgs from so many playstation platforms, this guy has a wealth of knowledge and interesting taste
AsumSaus

I haven't been into competitive smash in maybe six years now, but this is my go-to guy when I need my fix
Archipel

this is actual documentary content on japanese developers chockful of recorded and translated interviews. some real primary source shit
TheoryFighter

top-notch fighting game analysis both from a competitive meta perspective and a game design perspective. got me into Monolord as well!
SuperRAD

got into this guy hard during my monhun fixation earlier this year. probably the best repo of content on monhun history, to the point where he's run out of monhun content and is moving onto different but equally cool things
KBash

this guy would fit in well on backloggd I think. lots of analysis of very japanese games both well-known and obscure
That Video Games Show

a fav of mine recently, this channel is as clean-cut as it comes in showing off obscure games without unneeded skits, intros, or commentary
GameHut

the founder of Traveller's Tales has a youtube channel where proves that TT were total technical wizards and design dunces
Jeremy Parish

his production quality has gone up a lot as of late, and I'm glad he's finally covering sega stuff after years of droning nintendo adulation
Big Yellow

too dense for casual watching but move-by-move analysis of fighting game characters is always fascinating to me
oddheader

amazing to me that this guy does basically just creepypasta-adjacent spooky/weird/unsolved video game stuff and yet covers shit I've never remotely heard about in my life
Lowest Percent

a compendium of lots of cool speedrunning stuff, and I think some of the VO people have their own channels as well
Displaced Gamers

another highly in-depth technical channel but well-worth if you have some basic assembly knowledge
EZScape

I feel obligated to include him even though he doesn't really upload great stuff anymore. his older stuff presaged basically every other speedrunning channel tho
DidYouKnowGaming

used to not really like this channel but they've stepped it way up in the last year or so. I suppose they finally ran out of basic wikipedia facts of dole out
Top Hat Gaming Man

a bizarre figure and independent wrestler who nevertheless has quite a lot of interesting content. his wife, Lady Decade, has honestly had more interesting content for quite a while on unreleased hardware prototypes
Austin Eruption

he sort of has the affect of a PBG type but much more subdued, and the games he displays are rather fascinating whether hidden gems or complete dogshit
Tech Rules

a rather eclectic channel that has a deep grounding in the technical side of things and a lot of interesting discoveries
My Life in Gaming

not really a week-to-week channel for me but the RGB Masterclass is such a perfect introduction to capturing the best analog graphical output
Nerrel

found him through his MM3D video (as I'm sure many others did) and he continues to deliver great no-BS nintendo content
Abyssoft

one of the best speedrunning channels, and I'm glad he's breaking into MMO stuff as well
minimme

first found this guy through his look at software-rendered 3D on GBA and have been hooked since. a treasure trove of mediocre and/or overlooked games
The Geek Critique

every indicator about this channel makes me think I wouldn't like it but he's consistently so earnest and real and he backs it up with a lot of great observations
Somecallmejohnny

been watching this guy since I was a kid and he continues to get better and better. it's hard to watch his older stuff now but it's honestly insane how many games he's covered but this point
Bismuth

this has always been a great speedrunning channel but the recent history of the A Button Challenge has had me on the edge of my seat
Sharopolis

amazing technical breakdowns of retro games. it's easier to appreciate many of the innovative aspects of these titles while watching rather than playing tbh
ThaRixer

the place to go for sony speedrunning content, and a consistently top-notch producer
Storster

this guy was previously doing more traditional speedrunning content but he's started moving into some really neat areas that I dig
Same Name, Different Game

basically covers version differences, but he has info I can never seem to find searching online
Game Sack

this is what always appears in autoplay at 1am when we're zonked out on the couch. why is joe's mouth so goddamn big?

before people recommend him (them?) lemme just say: I have watched a lot of ThorHighHeels. I am not really a fan of his work (other than his MGS series retrospective)

He doesn't put out much these days, but I still rewatch Super Bunnyhop every now and then for some really good journalism-adjacent videos
He's made some mistakes, but only those who do nothing don't make them

super bunnyhop was the pinnacle of smart gaming commentary on yt when i was in high school, and I'm not sure entirely why i stopped watching him. i def need to check out some of his more recent videos

clicked on this list expecting it to be empty as a joke, leaving with it bookmarked since i already watch half of these fairly regularly and want to check out the others. thanks lmao

are you familiar with noah caldwell-gervais? easily my favorite person talking about games on youtube... can't recommend him enough. i also like thirhighheels (not a suggestion, heard loud and clear), grim beard, civvie, retro pals, crowbcat... and, uh, action button? been enjoying a bunch of megaten deep dives by a guy called marsh—he even beat smt nine. game sack is that youtube junk food, i think i've watched literally everything.

Futurasound Productions is a primarily Metal Gear Solid-focused youtuber. He pumps out video after video to a degree I simply couldn't keep up with, but the ones I did see were kind of incredible analyses of the series with keener insights than I'm used to seeing.

@zenoslime I've heard the name, I'll definitely check out him and marsh. civvie and grimbeard I've liked quite a bit, and I've only not watched more of them because I'm not very familiar with american jank fps games. i should put some of their videos in my watch later list so I'll remember to give them a try soon

@BeachEpisode i sat down and watched Futurasound's newest mgs2 and was blown away, he's so thorough in how he lays out the story. crazy how many codec conversations I had never heard before either

I recommend TehSnakerer and Ross's Game Dungeon if you like this "analytical heavily edited let's play" kind of format

I'm a fan of NitroRad's stuff, his videos are a good balance between interesting analysis and commentary and genuinely funny observations. Also really like his focus on 3D platformers and horror games, it's a fun niche to carve out since there's a lot of interesting B-tier stuff in these genres that he covers. His videos have a sort of "friend excitingly telling you about this thing he just played" tone to them.
Matthew Matosis is a personal favorite for me.

seconded on nitrorad, really chillax reviewer who covers a lot of scrimblo and licensed games but does it in a very casual and conversational way, more as oddities than trying to frame them as 'the big overlooked thing'.

Jacob Geller is not close my favourite gaming youtuber. He has a deep reverence and respect for the potential of videogames as an artform, and it's honestly just so infectious to listen to.

I started listing some and realized I definitely follow enough interesting video essayist to make my own list, so I'll prolly do that tomorrow and link it xD

Shammy is such an amazing and genuinely funny writer it almost makes you forgive the nearly year-long wait between videos. But maybe you shouldn't listen to me because one of my favourite youtubers is also SsethTzeentach

so many recs 😵‍💫 gonna have a lot of content to watch this week
If you're into deep analysis through the lens of the occult and psychology, Reinstall Paul is recommended. His stuff on Silent Hill trumps most takes on the games tbh and maybe one of the few youtube video game analysts I listen to wholeheartedly. Man puts in work.

Design Doc deserves to be on here imo
The gaming YT channels I've found to be the most consistently interesting are:
- Matthewmatosis
- B-Mask
- HyperBitHero (now just called Hero)
- TheGamingBritShow
- Clemps
- The Infinite Review
- SugarPunch Design Works
- Turbo Button
- Novacanoo

The catch is that most of these guys only upload a few videos per year, if even that, but even still I think all of them are really high quality.

Made my own list if you're interested in some recs: https://www.backloggd.com/u/Hot_Anarcocoa/list/my-favorite-gaming-youtubers/
Anyone know of any good channels centered around 7th gen games? Gonna go and shout-out yung junko, kacey, a kind ale war whose a bit dead, american mcgee, boulder punch, calcom, dimetree, import gaming ftw, flippy, jordan underneath, manly reviews and pelvic gaming. Most of these are channels centered around 1 given topic.
