Sega Lord X
would not be into games like I am today without this guy. one of the best sources of what it was like to experience sega's heyday and how to appreciate their style of game design. ridiculous amount of content uploaded too

I have a computer engineering background and really enjoy technical deep-dives on games, and MVG has that in spades with his coverage of emulation history, piracy techniques, hacking guides, and gaming spec analysis. manages to make his videos appealing to casual viewers as well as detail-rich

uploads very rarely but has documentary-level videos on the development of many clasic 8-bit and 16-bit games. his production abilities are entirely on another level, and his research is top-notch

great gaming design analysis that's very mechanics-focused, and very comfy to watch as well. making this list made me realize that he's now inactive...

I was wondering who he was and why he was in my subs until I looked at his videos; I mostly know his stuff through my roommate putting it on. wide variety of speedrunning content, and I highly recommend the new OoT Brawl Demo speedrun history

to the surprise of virtually no one. without this man popularizing documentary-length speedrun histories, my roommates and I would've spent some very bored nights in front of the tv

got into this guy hard during my monhun fixation earlier this year. probably the best repo of content on monhun history, to the point where he's run out of monhun content and is moving onto different but equally cool things

a fav of mine recently, this channel is as clean-cut as it comes in showing off obscure games without unneeded skits, intros, or commentary

Top Hat Gaming Man
a bizarre figure and independent wrestler who nevertheless has quite a lot of interesting content. his wife, Lady Decade, has honestly had more interesting content for quite a while on unreleased hardware prototypes

he sort of has the affect of a PBG type but much more subdued, and the games he displays are rather fascinating whether hidden gems or complete dogshit

amazing technical breakdowns of retro games. it's easier to appreciate many of the innovative aspects of these titles while watching rather than playing tbh

He doesn't put out much these days, but I still rewatch Super Bunnyhop every now and then for some really good journalism-adjacent videos
He's made some mistakes, but only those who do nothing don't make them

super bunnyhop was the pinnacle of smart gaming commentary on yt when i was in high school, and I'm not sure entirely why i stopped watching him. i def need to check out some of his more recent videos
clicked on this list expecting it to be empty as a joke, leaving with it bookmarked since i already watch half of these fairly regularly and want to check out the others. thanks lmao
are you familiar with noah caldwell-gervais? easily my favorite person talking about games on youtube... can't recommend him enough. i also like thirhighheels (not a suggestion, heard loud and clear), grim beard, civvie, retro pals, crowbcat... and, uh, action button? been enjoying a bunch of megaten deep dives by a guy called marsh—he even beat smt nine. game sack is that youtube junk food, i think i've watched literally everything.
Futurasound Productions is a primarily Metal Gear Solid-focused youtuber. He pumps out video after video to a degree I simply couldn't keep up with, but the ones I did see were kind of incredible analyses of the series with keener insights than I'm used to seeing.
@zenoslime I've heard the name, I'll definitely check out him and marsh. civvie and grimbeard I've liked quite a bit, and I've only not watched more of them because I'm not very familiar with american jank fps games. i should put some of their videos in my watch later list so I'll remember to give them a try soon
@BeachEpisode i sat down and watched Futurasound's newest mgs2 and was blown away, he's so thorough in how he lays out the story. crazy how many codec conversations I had never heard before either
I recommend TehSnakerer and Ross's Game Dungeon if you like this "analytical heavily edited let's play" kind of format
I'm a fan of NitroRad's stuff, his videos are a good balance between interesting analysis and commentary and genuinely funny observations. Also really like his focus on 3D platformers and horror games, it's a fun niche to carve out since there's a lot of interesting B-tier stuff in these genres that he covers. His videos have a sort of "friend excitingly telling you about this thing he just played" tone to them.
Matthew Matosis is a personal favorite for me.
seconded on nitrorad, really chillax reviewer who covers a lot of scrimblo and licensed games but does it in a very casual and conversational way, more as oddities than trying to frame them as 'the big overlooked thing'.
Jacob Geller is not close my favourite gaming youtuber. He has a deep reverence and respect for the potential of videogames as an artform, and it's honestly just so infectious to listen to.
I started listing some and realized I definitely follow enough interesting video essayist to make my own list, so I'll prolly do that tomorrow and link it xD
Shammy is such an amazing and genuinely funny writer it almost makes you forgive the nearly year-long wait between videos. But maybe you shouldn't listen to me because one of my favourite youtubers is also SsethTzeentach
so many recs 😵💫 gonna have a lot of content to watch this week
If you're into deep analysis through the lens of the occult and psychology, Reinstall Paul is recommended. His stuff on Silent Hill trumps most takes on the games tbh and maybe one of the few youtube video game analysts I listen to wholeheartedly. Man puts in work.
Design Doc deserves to be on here imo
The gaming YT channels I've found to be the most consistently interesting are:
- Matthewmatosis
- B-Mask
- HyperBitHero (now just called Hero)
- TheGamingBritShow
- Clemps
- The Infinite Review
- SugarPunch Design Works
- Turbo Button
- Novacanoo
The catch is that most of these guys only upload a few videos per year, if even that, but even still I think all of them are really high quality.

Anyone know of any good channels centered around 7th gen games? Gonna go and shout-out yung junko, kacey, a kind ale war whose a bit dead, american mcgee, boulder punch, calcom, dimetree, import gaming ftw, flippy, jordan underneath, manly reviews and pelvic gaming. Most of these are channels centered around 1 given topic.
