Horror games

Ranking of the horror games I've played. The qualifier is that the game must be focused on horror and survival. So, something like Doom3 does not count as a horror game.

Great atmosphere and use of resource scarcity for tense exploration. Even parts of the level design are an expendable resource.
Unnerving and mysterious experience that seems like parts of it work with nightmare logic. Fantastic music and puzzles. Bad resource balance. (too much)
Exceptionally creepy for a PS1 game. Great level design that seems to subconsciously guide you without actually telling you anything. Good resource balance (not too much) Good music.
Phenomenal art design and atmosphere. Probably the best licensed Alien game of all time. Good stealth, good level design and decent resource balance. The tension is unmatched. It even uses puzzles to force the player to be vulnerable.
A fantastic survival horror game with unrelenting tension and a lot of freedom in problem solving. Some of the best resource management balancing in the genre. A ton of replayability due to randomization.
Amazing replayability and fantastic music. Good atmosphere and great monster designs. Bad resource balance. (too much)
Very good modernization of the gameplay of the original. Fails to replicate all of the original's features. Good atmosphere and fairly functional dynamic difficulty. Good boss fights. Decent puzzles.
An interactive nightmare. Great use of limited resources. Some bad interface design and repeated levels. Amazing music.
Phenomenal antagonist and (mostly) great and unique boss fights. Decent level design and good atmosphere. Weapons feel great to use. Boring-looking enemies and unacceptable unskippable cutscenes.
Great horror visuals and puzzles. Great music. Not particularly scary.

Extremely unsettling and mysterious. The setting is unique and well executed. The horror escalates steadily all the way. Dumb difficulty design and idiotic protagonist.
Fantastic atmosphere and music. Good level design. Bad inventory management. Bad boss fights. Bad enemy design.
Great atmosphere and interesting CSI theme. Fun combat and exploration.
Interesting story and characters. Good use of player vulnerability and psychological tricks.
Interesting story and characters. Good use of player vulnerability and psychological tricks. Very short, but uses permadeath to amplify the tension.
Great enemy design and replayability. Nice use of grounded and relatable locations.
Great level design with branching paths. Good use of light as a finite resource.
Very faithful adaptation of the board game's design. Interesting story and characters. Good, limited use of Lovecraft mythos.
Great atmosphere and good puzzles. Creepy enemies.
Good atmosphere and puzzles. Bad combat.
Great story and storytelling style. Good use of audio. Repetitive gameplay. Linear level design.
A huge amount of references to various Lovecraft stories. Fantastic beginning with tons of good horror. Crappy later half that devolves into a clunky shooter.
Consistently unnerving. Good use of limited resources. Hilariously bad voice acting.
Fantastic antagonist and creepy enemies. Great gameplay variety and good level design. Bad puzzles. Clunky interface.
Great antagonist. Good use of branching paths in level design. Decent puzzles. Too much focus on action. Terrible dodge mechanic.
Too much combat gameplay. Very good detective gameplay. Not very subtle with its Lovecraftian aspects.
Cool art style. Fun and unique stealth. Interesting storyline. No replayability.
Some cool Lovecraftian designs, but overall a ludicrously unfaithful adaptation of the mythos, bringing it down to a way too grounded level. Somehow manages to remove the cosmic from cosmic horror by making it too relatable. Gameplay is almost nonexistent.
Initially creates a good impression of tension and the resource balance seems good, but the player quickly realizes that it's fake. Annoying protagonist, later half drags on. Condescending game over mechanic that skips content when you fail.

Incredible visuals and atmosphere. Great use of disorientation and realistic navigation to mess with the player. Quickly reveals that its gameplay has almost nothing to offer.
Fantastic controls. Top-tier fanservice. Great characters. Good resource balance. A bit too much focus on action.

Doesn't work properly. Didn't finish. Good potential.
Trash puzzle and level design. Didn't finish.
