Weird question but I'm actually curious about it since you say you have some and I've never seen a clear answer: do reproduction cards run normally or they more prompt to have bugs and the such? I know it may depend on how each may be made, but I remember hearing that some could potentially brick consoles and I don't know how true is that...

@DeemonAndGames That's largely a myth. You're more likely to brick a console by improperly installing a hard mod or altering system software. While it's possible a badly sized board could bend pins, typically a bad repro will cause self-limiting problems by corrupting saves, crashing, and generally behaving in less predictable ways. Aftermarket boards have become more sophisticated over time, and so long as you're buying from someone who picks quality parts, there's no reason to expect abnormal behavior.

I think the most genuinely concerning thing about reproductions is how often they flood sites like Ebay, and how predatory sellers will try to pass them off as legitimate. However, it's not impossible to develop an eye for repros as they tend to source shells from the same place. N64 repros, for example, have imperfections in the Nintendo logo on the back (the i should be dotted with a square, repros typically dot with a circle) and the plastic is glossier due to the lower grade being used. Repro Genesis carts lack texture and look overly shiny, with labels that are less bled through and more vibrant.

So long as you aren't buying the cheapest crap you see on sites like Aliexpress and are doing your part as a consumer to research who you're buying from, you'll be fine.

Will add that if you do start researching where to get good repros, might want to steer clear of a site whose name can be abbreviated as RG&B, at least for the time being. Pretty sure it was recently abandoned but the domain and payment portal are still active.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I've had my experiences with sellers triying to pass repro game boy advanced as legitimate, guess that's why I was a bit weary of them... It's pretty sad that people do such things just to get a couple more bucks (or MUCH more, depending on the game), didn't know the trick to spot fake N64 games tho, that's pretty useful to know if I ever begin buying in the near future!

Still, good to know that if they are quality enough they won't damage the console, I'll look more into it when I buy one again and ignore that site. Again, thank you! :D

Funny that after I wrote all that I bought a 40$ Pokemon Blue cart that's hacked to boot from a Nintendo 64 and that son of a bitch will not save at all. Actually the first time I've had a cart that just won't retain save date period, the other couple carts I've owned that weren't well made would just periodically corrupt it but would retain data at least for a little while.
