Scott PIlgrim - the iconic beat-em-up revival; the omgzlol gamer reference bonanza; the lost-to-time-for-nostalgia-fomo-profit prodigal son, - is not good!

On single player, anyway.

This is a sucky beat-em-up, but unlike most bad beat-em-ups, I don't think it's because of a lack of developer experience. Most of the time, the weak links in this genre are bad because developers had no interest in designing meaningful mechanics or enemies. It's games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Altered Beast, Double Dragon and Simpsons that give the medium its unduly reputation as a junkfood button-masher.

Contrarily, Ubi Montreal and select staff had previous beat-em-up experience on GBA Revenge of the Sith: A solid and surprisingly inventive translation of Star Wars' world and rules into a fun, campy run. Being a handheld game, it bears genre modifications catered towards a single-player oriented run. Enemies populate in small numbers and die quickly, but can be individually aggressive and defensive. In turn, Anakin and Obi-Wan's movesets harken moreso to 3D action games, with lots of combination-specific force utilities to apply to different scenarios. There's also more passive differences like stat growth and diminished attack hitboxes. Some of these changes aren't ideal to what people look for in arcade brawlers - and that's fine. But applied to this game's structure and pacing, it fits, bringing few design roadbumps in the way. By all accounts, it's good - and by GBA licensed terms, it's kinda insane.

I bring this up because Scott Pilgrim totally re-uses this game design model - which is fine for its aesthetic elements. Scott PIlgrim has good production, faithfully re-creating the comic's spirit with Paul Robertson's obnoxious-but-fitting pixel chibi style. The trouble is in the 'game'. Scott Pilgrim isn't targeted as a 1-P handheld; it's a 4-P console thing. This leads to a myriad of incompatible mechanics, some being minute oversights while others are total flubs. Everyone has a huge unlockable move pool that amounts to little because enemies block everything and button-mashing is always more optimal damage output. And out of those huge movepools, there's somehow almost no crowd control - fine in RotS's 2-4 enemy waves, but not in 5-10 waves here. Any time you're surrounded on both sides, you're toast. Enemy design overall is too tanky to deal with. If you want to make it through without excess grinding, you gotta block constantly, which just feels like a terrible return on investment in beatemups. It's a killjoy to sit your ass down for 10 seconds, wait for the enemy to whiff often enough, then retaliate with a combo that can't even kill them.

Ironically, bosses were the one consistently good part, since they're usually 1-on-1 and have very readable patterns supported by fun gimmicks. Scott's overwrought, tacky design language is at its most creative here, and the fights actually got me kinda tense. This is clearly where their RotS experience paid off the most - doubly-ironic considering that RotS's bosses use a separate, close-quarters-locked combat structure.

Oh and River City Ransom's RPG shop progression is here in a linear game with dedicated stage setpieces and it feels extremely bad to engage with. Grinding gets old quick and too much important tech is locked behind it. It's fine in RPG's where things are low-key and optimized around contextually-repeated steps, but not in a game where levels have designated point-A-to-point-B design with tons of stage gimmicks between.

But the worst part? Menu-ing through the shops is really awkward and has tons of automated pauses. A single transaction takes like, 10x longer than it should. How.

I'm sure all these points would be mitigated when played with a group, though that introduces a bigger critique: A beat-em-up shouldn't use co-op as a mean's end to balance problems. Friends or not doesn't change the fact that everyone magically has a 3-page Tekken movelist they'll scarcely use, and it certainly doesn't fix enemies dealing 25 damage off of basic combos. I get it's probably too hard to make 1 campaign that suits solo AND co-op evenly - but hey, the good classics figured out how to do it 2 decades ago.

I don't imagine myself replaying this soon - if anything, I'm more curious about re-visitng RotS. What I am looking forward to, though, is when Jenny plays this a million bajillion years from now and gives it 4 stars.

Really wanted to tough it out and beat it but, god, it’s such a tough one. So aesthetically pleasing, both musically and visually, but just feels like torture to play, and level design is very anti-player. Made worse because after a couple of levels I realized that a Scott Pilgrim game should’ve been an Earthbound-style RPG and probably would be if they decided on making a game post-Undertale, lol. Will always love this as a novelty which is why I don’t regret getting the Limited Run of it, and maybe I’d give it another go doing online co-op, but, well. Scott Pilgrim, if your life was a game I would punch it.

First time playing this in ten years and every song, level and enemy is still vividly clear in my memory. It's almost sobering to come to the realisation that it's not a particularly good game as far as beat-em-ups go, but I cherish it all the same. Wonderfully charming and creative and with a momentum that only ever ends when you get stunlocked to death from an enemy's offscreen divekick or something. There are better games in this genre, but few at all with pixel art and score this lovingly made.

This was a 4/5 game when it came out in 2010, but this "remaster" is little more than a lazy re-release of an old game with no attempt at cleaning it up.

As a big fan of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, I loved this game back in 2010. I maxed every character, got all the achievements, and saw all the endings. My wife (then girlfriend) and I put a lot of time into the game and I have nothing but fond memories. So when Ubisoft announced a remaster, I was stoked. Unfortunately, they did the bare minimum just to get the old game to run on new consoles and called it a day.

After playing other modern beat 'em ups I've enjoyed like TMNT Shredder's Revenge and River City Girls, Scott Pilgrim hasn't aged quite as well as I remembered. Enemies have seemingly endless block with no way to break it and they'll often fly from off screen and stun lock you with no warning. Even on "easy" difficulty, it's an exercise in frustration especially if you're playing alone. Playing solo means no one to revive you when you go down, so you've only got 3 lives to get through a level - and you'll have to start from the beginning if you fail. Why are we still using this old "lives" systems when we're not playing it on a machine built to eat quarters?

Aged gameplay aside, the game's online multiplayer is busted. If you manage to get through the game's cumbersome party creation and can get a group together without error codes, you get to enjoy latency issues, random hitching, and progress-blocking bugs. For a game that's better with friends, you'd think they'd put a bit more effort into making that part of the game actually work.

I was playing the game with a monthly game club and we all sort of felt like it was a slog to get through until we found an exploit that allowed you to easily max your stats. Once you do that, the game is a dream. You can run through the level quickly, tearing through enemies, and rarely going down. It's just straight fun. Sadly, "just use an exploit and make sure you don't play the game alone" shouldn't be a requirement to have fun with a video game.

It's disappointing that Ubisoft didn't put as much love into remastering this game as the original devs put into making it. The slapping soundtrack by Anamanaguchi, the beautiful pixel visuals, the scene cards drawn by the comic's creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, the references to other games, and the absolute reverence they show to the source material is phenomenal. It just sucks that this game is kind of a bummer to play in 2022.

+ Incredible adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comics
+ Banging soundtrack Anamanaguchi
+ Fantastic visuals and overall presentatio
+ Some fun hiding under an uphill climb

- Terrible, broken online
- Rough combat issues like stun-locking and infinite blocking enemies
- Too punishing even on "Easy" difficulty

Notice how many people stopped talking about this how good this game is when it finally got re-released. Yeah. Besides the pixel art and the godly OST, this game REALLY pales in comparison to a lot of others in it's genre, even when it came out, tbh. Even charm can't save substandard gameplay.

It was a pog game back on the 360 and it still is now, especially when you read about how it was even made in the first place. It's impressively adapted and introduced so many of us to Anamanaguchi. It really is a great piece of media to accompany the movie and comics.

I waited years for this game to get put on PC.... on a platform my friends actually have downloaded.. and in 2023, I finally got my wish. But boy, did the monkey's paw sure curl. Realistically, this game is hard as absolute balls for really no reason. I'm pretty sure the last level and subsequent boss fight is literally impossible. The enemy's only goal is to dogpile the shit out of you and it's very easy to get insta-killed in a sandwich.

A beat 'em up was the best way possible for this story to be told in game form though, despite the difficulty. It's still very fun solo, and it would be fun with friends as well... if the online.. worked. Played this game with my 3 friends for the whole experience but we kept getting de-synced in every level which would break the game. The only way to fix it was to replay the entire level from the beginning and hope it didn't de-sync again, which put a sour taste in their mouths since it was their first playthrough.

You can buy this game on Steam but you still need the Uplay launcher to play it, which barely functions. I'd still recommend it as the art it is alone. It's short and is more accurate to the comics than the movie is, so it adds better context to the events that take place.

Stylish spritework and a godtier soundtrack, but the whole difficulty spikes and leveling system truly make me feel like Ramona Flowers dealing with Scott's bullshit. Complete Edition has some minor bugs that feel like they forgot to check, but nothing major that ruins the experience from my playthrough,

Punch dogs, punch zombies, and punch your ex-girlfriend as you make your way through the dystopian wasteland of Toronto, Canada, set to one of the greatest soundtracks of its generation. Still wish it was little less grindy and more balanced for solo play but otherwise this game fucks and always has.

An 8-bit beat em up masterpiece. I freakin love this game, its got everything you could ever want in a game, a fantastic soundtrack, level design, over the top but fun boss fights and incredibly fun gameplay. Like you can send people to the moon and use other people to beat up other people, what is not to like!

Its a little fidgety at some points, there are a few glitches and if you grind for the $500 to unlock the special store then you basically just enable easy mode which I kind of regret doing, it would have been more satisfying to beat the final boss as a challenge but me and my brother didnt even lose a life once at the last stage. Its also a little short only having 7 stages. If it just had a little bit more content then I think this would definitely be a 5 star game.

But overall what it had and how fun and fantastic this game is, it more then deserves the 4 stars im giving it.

Love Scott Pilgrim, read the comic books, watched the movie, watched the animated series, played this game, it wasn't good, oh no. Ok I should explain myself, I think on everything that isn't the core game itself, this game is amazing at. The visuals are so eye catching, the sound design and overall ost are among some of the best i've heard, and it's a great game for fans. It's when you start dissecting the game is when it gets really ugly. Once you look past the property and you view it as a beat-em up game it's so disappointing.
Lets start off with the gameplay, the gameplay is what you'd expect from a beat-em up, but did they seriously have to make going to shops one of the most frustrating and annoying things. The way these shops work is that you have to buy the item first before you can actually know what it does. The game gives a vague description but that alone is not enough because all you care about are what it does for you the player. Also lets get the elephant out of the room, this game is unnecessarily hard when you first start out, I don't care if its trying to replicate the old-school style beat-em ups in its punishing difficulty but most of the time it feels like they should've been trying to replicate a fun experience. Even on the Average Joe difficulty this shit is just annoying, I hate how slow the characters are when they get knocked down it takes way too long for them to even get back up and there's no way to decrease the time on that, it's just how it was developed. No I don't think using a coin glitch just to get a bionic arm excuses this games sad excuse of a challenge. Leveling up doesn't even affect your stats it only gives you new moves to bring in the illusion of this game being fun, when it's not. The game only gets fun when you have all the moves but by that point you'd already game over'd multiple times that you're only on the 2nd boyfriend boss.

Man what happened here, I know this game at one point was considered lost media in how you couldn't purchase it anymore, but now that its back its made me realize how overhyped it was. For Scott Pligrim fans I think its a neat novelty, playing this game on your own, good luck.

I haven't read the scott pilgrim books, but I love the movie, I really didn't like the second Level, but it got so much better for me, great beat-em-up

- Online mais falha do que ajuda. Foi difícil eu e mais um amigo conseguirmos chegar em 2h de conexão;
- Existem cheats no jogo que te deixam roubado e não interferem em nada nas conquistas. É mais pra zuar quando tiver terminado ou indo em busca do 100%;

If the game wasn’t constantly breaking due to ubisoft having no clue how to make a glitch free video game (or a launcher for that matter) then it was making me unlock useless combos instead of grabbing which is kind of needed in a beatemup where all of the enemies block your attacks constantly.

Through unexplainable sheer luck and coincidence that confuses even the smartest scientists, the game miraculously stopped all of the previously mentioned glitches. That was when I noticed it, or rather heard it. It was shattering any chance that my already bad hearing had at recovery through its god awful soundtrack. This is seriously some of the worst shit ive ever heard 🔥

Through divine intervention, God himself answered my prayers. He bestowed upon me a single blessing, one that allowed me to live and see the game, no, life itself in a new image. In His unyielding grace, I was allowed to see the game past its many, and no word can do this justice, many problems. Because of this, I noticed Scott Pilgrim™’s horrendous, disproportionate and repulsive art style that the wretched series is somehow known for, blinding my once unobscured eyes.

In the dark reaches of existence, unknown beings who are capable of power beyond the comprehension of even the most powerful deity heard my plight. Effortlessly and without a single movement, the beings shot out a single, delicate and precise ionizing particle from the cores of their existence. Traveling at speeds unparalleled in any reality, the speed quaked the heavens themselves and the very fabric of reality. The destined particle perfectly hit my Windows 10 Computer within an interval that defies all logic after entering the atmosphere, changing a single binary number to a 0, and thanks to the poor optimization of the game and Ubisoft’s incompetent developers, that is all it took for my game to crash completely. With it, my save data not only in game but on my entire computer was completely destroyed. Every single file was corrupted and it was all thanks to Ubisoft.

Please. Do not play this fucking game.

I felt scammed after hearing people gas this thing up for a decade only to play it and find out that it’s a very poorly put together river city rampage rip-off.

im hanging out with a guy lately went on some dates we got some interests in common hes funny and hes super cute and i guess im slowly and steadily falling in love with him

i got this thing when i meet new people that i need to fucking read/play/watch whatever they like because im always interested to see what their tastes are and shit like that so when he told me he liked scott pilgrim i opened the volumes at 9 am and at 5 pm i finished the entirety of the series dont call me a simp already 3 friends called me that im fine with it

so scott pilgrim in itself is a great graphic novel the characters are fun the artstyle is charming the events and story are even funnier and i had a good time with it so no complaints im not a huge graphic novel/western comic fan so it was a surprise how much i enjoyed it

yknow what it felt like a time capsule from a time long gone like some of those cartoons in the 2000s or early 2010s its that kind of vibe i have never consumed any type of scott pilgrim media but i was actually filled with nostalgia idk dont quote me on that tho

long story short scott likes a girl and this girl got some 7 evil exes that want to kill him or whatever so he gotta beat all of them up to get the girl of his dreams

ramona is a great character but i ended up loving knives or wallace and in particular stills way better than the main duo (im a stills kin i got him as a telegram pfp for the moment im that devoted)

so yeah the main story stuff is about that now since i wanted to thoroughly be finished with scott pilgrim i wanted to play this game

DISCLAIMER: i played like 5 beat em ups until now all street of rage games and shredders revenge so my opinion on beat em up is scarce at best for now dont listen to me

its kinda a textbook beat em up with different characters and a coop mode that i didnt have the pleasure to try because i got no friends so all in all i enjoyed my time with it even tho the controls are kinda stiff and having to unlock some basic beat em up moves is kind of a pain and also it absolutely baffled me how hard it was and then i found out that shops existed so i just boosted strength in wallaces shop and i would beat everyones asses frfr

bosses were also p great for this games standars and todd is still the hottest one of the bunch

played as stills ofc and a little bit as scott i didnt try the other characters because i was kinda done with the game already lets be real

gameplay wise thats basically it its a beat em up what do you want me to say the art style is super cute pixelated and trying to convey scott pilgrims style into a videogame and they kinda managed to

ost was particularly great so cant complain on that

my honest criticism apart from the gameplay stuff is that i wanted some more callbacks or easter eggs or like story stuff interactions between character it was very bare bones like you get a character beat every single ramonas ex like in the main story and thats basically it theres some super superficial interactions here and there that you wouldnt even understand if you didnt read the comic but apart from that its made entirely for scott pilgrims fans which is both good and kinda a shame i wanted them to push the game a little further

also i have no idea what this version adds or refines from the base game but i didnt see that many differences to be honest so maybe someone will explain it to me here

not a bad game but its appealing mainly just for scott pilgrims fanbase

so yeah

-cute game, rlly beautiful and expressive sprites tbh, just not my type of thing rlly but also so fucking short it never outstays its welcome.
-dude i remember when ppl were being sooo fucking annoying about this being delisted and after playing it i rlly don't get it lmao. like idk kinda feel this way about most "lost media", def stuff should be more accessible but also idk i don't think it was a great travesty that this was gone for a long time. played through w my boyfwend and we kept doing impressions of soyjack reddit ppl, was lots of fun
-borderline unplayable without cheats, or at least was for us as we're both v bad at games.
-tbh never read the comics till this month bc i hate the movie version sm. edgar wright retire bitch. think the movie portrays scott and his actions and his relationship w women in a rlly fucking gross incel-like way that i have never fucking vibed w. does not help that michael cera is only good at playing scary weird ppl like in magic magic or this is the end, anytime they cast him as a good guy i get so mfn geeked out.
-finally did read the comics after watching the series and i think they're both like pretty expertly done. esp in terms of characterization of knives, character is almost an afterthought in the movie where as she's rlly focal in everything else and for good reason. so much of the comic is about how everyone is looking to take advantage and manipulate her mostly bc of her age. shit made me miss old friends and rethink past actions.
-that post about infinite jest and empathy but about me and this series tbh
-why in the movie is the knee joke about the only lesbian character and how it basically boils down to haha a cismale made a lesbian cum hahahah like thats fucking weird esp considering in the comic that's a joke about envy like why was it changed to roxie edgar wright ur fucking weird dude!!
-think the series might be the better version though, think it's rlly smart in how it goes about reckoning w a problematic past and updating it for modern audiences and like how one can right their wrongs, real good shit tbh.
-i love young neil ^__^
-why tf was wallace added into the game three years after it came out lmfaooo

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD: THE GAME REVIEW
Note: I give spoiler warnings for spoilers.

It sucks when something you devoted time to ends up being bad, even if you anticipated little from it. It's much worse to set high expectations, only for whatever it is to turn out mediocre.
I'd been looking forward to Scott Pilgrim's complete edition since the moment I found out about it. I've never read the comics, but the movie is one of my favorites; the writing is chock full of comedic genius and memorable moments, the visual effects are fun, and the characters are delightful. On top of that adoration for 'vs the World', the game has had the lost media status for years, which fascinated me further and made its re-release feel special. I rarely buy any title on launch - hell, I rarely buy them full price at all - but because of those biases, I couldn't help myself here.
Maybe that influenced my opinion a bit, too. When I do spend the money, it's because I really believe I'll enjoy something. This just didn't turn out to be a right call, unfortunately, even if it was only 15 dollars. I wanted to love it, but it lacks most of what made the movie so amazing - as well as what makes beat 'em ups fun. I suppose it's a lesson learned in setting the bar too high beforehand.
That's not to say it's all bad, of course. There's some strong direction with the art and music, which is what manages to carry the whole thing across the finish line. Still, it fails in so many other areas that it becomes difficult to recommend to anyone, even hardcore fans of the franchise as a whole.
It's important to note before going any further that the developers faced huge time constraints and budget cuts, which I absolutely believe were factors in the final product (both the main game and the DLCs.) If you take the time to examine it, it's easy to see that what we got was a skeleton of what the team really hoped to make. So many aspects are lackluster at best, and downright bad at worst - the environments, the movesets, the story, the worldbuilding. I've found reports of a lot of awesome cut content, such as mid/side bosses (Crash and the Boys, Winifred Hailey) and chase sequences (one on a beach before Roxie's fight, and one on skateboards after Lucas'.) There was even supposed to be a Montreal DLC where you could play as Envy, Lynette, and Todd.
It's honestly depressing to imagine 'what could have been' if the devs were given more freedom. There were a lot of fantastic ideas that had to be scrapped - probably more than we'll ever know about - and I'll forever wish we could've gotten THAT instead.
(Another small note, I think playthroughs are generally much more fun with the online multiplayer. However, connections are extremely unreliable. I was often dropped almost immediately. In a few other cases, I had to quit because of glitches that made it unplayable.)

IN-DEPTH REVIEW

Visuals:
There's definitely a nice visual style here. The pixel art is charming, and it manages to retain the feel of the comics while simultaneously putting a fresh spin on it. This applies even more-so to the little story portions shown after bossfights.
Ultimately, I do think there are better-looking pixel games, but what's here is still really good. The character designs are neat, for the most part (even if that's mostly contributable to the comics.) The overworld map looks nice. The backgrounds are phenomenal. Couple all of that with the awesome animations, and you have a very solid product in this regard.
Speaking of the animations, one of my favorite parts of playing was seeing each character's unique spin on the shared attacks. Even if they're the same moveset at their core, it's fun that everyone's personalities and fighting styles were put into them.
However, that brings me to my first complaint; the Wallace and Knives DLCs are almost entirely made up of reused resources from Stephen and Kim, respectively. This leaves them with very little of their own characterization. There are occasionally reused models/animations in the base game, too - but I can excuse it more there, since it's not often immediately noticeable. It's much less forgivable when it's not only content people were originally asked to pay extra for, but it's specifically meant to be extra playable characters... and those playable characters are basically just reskinned versions of ones you already have! Thankfully, both Knives and Wallace (as well as the online mode, which was originally bundled with Wallace) come with this version. I definitely do not think it would've been worth it otherwise.
It's a pretty small complaint, but I also hate the shop screens. They seem to be designed as counter-intuitively as possible. It's very inconvenient.
My biggest issue with the visual design, though, is the strangely objectifying approach the devs took to a lot of the females. It's difficult not to notice how excessively bouncy nearly all of the women's chests are. A woman will simply move around idly, and her chest will shake with enough force to kill someone. On top of that, Ramona isn't wearing any pants for some inconceivable reason. It's reportedly her 'bikini outfit' from the comics, but even if that's true... WHY? It's wintertime in the game! She has so many cool looks they could have chosen from, but they chose the most impractical one - presumably just so they could sexualize her more!
Kim also sports a ridiculously short skirt with no tights. Way worse than this, though, is that because Knives - a 17 year old - is just a reskinned Kim, she has the "chest" issue in her victory animation. I think they could have taken the time to make one more to avoid that.
But possibly the worst fault in this regard is that Kim's special move is her kissing Knives (like they drunkenly did in the comics.) [SPOILERS] While this is a story issue and not visual, it's also notable in this discussion that Kim's ending is the two getting together. It's presumably meant as a joke, but it's still gross. [SPOILER ENDING] But most egregious is that, in the credits, game screenshots are shown with little boxes next to each character (that display both their name and a comment.) One is shown of these two kissing, and Kim's box says 'Rating: Hot!', while Knives' says '17 years old. Rating: x2 hot!' Good lord, come on, she's a minor. That's disgusting and inexcusable.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me taking such issue here, but I do! It was simultaneously very uncomfortable and very disappointing. On the whole, it's a visually striking product; it's just unfortunate that it falls into the trap of typical media misogyny.
Overall, 4/5.

Sound:
The soundtrack is undeniably one of the best things here, if not the best. Just like the art, the music fits the spirit of the comics perfectly. The 8bit tunes mixed with rock instrumentals add up to something truly wonderful; it combines the band and video game themes present throughout the entire series in a really amazing way. Not only that, but it manages to give a lot of personality to something that desperately needs it.
My only issue is that I wish there was a bit more variety. While there are memorable tracks, a few of them run together, given that they often implement identical instruments and style. Even so, they're all exceptionally good, so I can't make too big of a deal of it.
Overall, 4.5/5.

Story:
The game follows the basis of the comic's plot, except that most of the details are left out. Everything is very minimal; there's little character interaction, only a few short 'scenes', and no dialogue at all. Because of that, there's a complete lack of nearly any jokes - even visual. The game ends up missing out on most of the humor (and by extension, the characterization) that plays a huge part in other versions of Scott Pilgrim. It is absolutely detrimental to the experience as a whole.
I do like how there's a unique ending for each character. However, some of them are REALLY bad. [SPOILERS] I think it's particularly important to break down Scott's. In his, Ramona leaves him and he gets back together with his exes... Including Knives. It's implied he's only pretending to be happy, but it's still super weird.
[SPOILERS STILL] This is what I saw on my first playthrough. I had no prior knowledge of the multiple endings; I just thought this was what happened. Even after I found out, I was still appalled. This was the big moment they chose to give their protagonist? One of the most important parts of his arc - at least, in the movie - is maturing enough to realize dating Knives is wrong. They wasted 4-5 hours of my time to give me 20 seconds of this complete and utter shit.
[SPOILERS STILL] I know there will be people who defend this because it's supposed to be a non-canonical joke. However, it's difficult to take it as such when someone has no way of knowing that. I was totally unhappy with this outcome and nearly retired the game because of it. Also, the "it's a joke" excuse can only get you so far - especially when the jokes aren't even funny. The situation is treated comedically in the movie too, but it's executed well. All of the people around Scott recognize and openly acknowledge that his dating a highschooler is wrong, even if they're going about it in a funny way. The humor is at his expense, not in support of him. None of that is here at all. In fact, sexualization of Knives is treated as a good thing multiple times.
[SPOILERS STILL] I've already mentioned Kim's ending, too, and why I dislike it. Wallace's is also pretty bad, though in a different way. Each conclusion has a picture, with a few sentences summarizing what happens after you defeat Gideon... Except that they didn't give Wallace any summary at all. He only has a piece of art and nothing else. You guys really couldn't even take the time to write one more paragraph? Ugh. [SPOILER ENDING]
There are some neat moments, but only a few. If I'd never seen the movie, and only played the game, I probably would have forgotten the plot. Thankfully, the other iterations have made the story so iconic that this one is helped along slightly.
Overall, 1.5/5.

Gameplay:
The fighting itself is okay. The moves all feel pretty good, and there's a nice bit of variety even though they're all straightforward. I also love that the inputs are simplistic and easy to remember - that's a big plus for me.
When you're put up against either giant waves of enemies, or a few particularly tough ones, the game is pretty enjoyable. There's strategy involved then, and you have to be smarter about when you use specific moves. The combat was quickly ruined for me, though, when it became apparent how unbalanced everything was.
Depending on your difficulty selection, the bosses can range from 'very easy' to 'a little less easy'. The devs decided to counter-act this in the worst possible way, too. Before each boss, you are forced to play two or three levels with no breaks in between. Individual levels can take anywhere from ten to twenty minutes - sometimes even longer if it's your first time going through. As a result, you'll most likely be very low on lives by the time you get to the next ex. That means you'll most likely die to them at least once... And you'll be forced to play all of those levels over again.
[SPOILERS] This is pushed to the max in the very last stretch. You do a level, fight a boss, go through a platforming section, fight another boss, do the most difficult level in the game, then finally fight the final boss. There is only one place during all of this to replenish your health, and it's literally right before the last part. You are not given the chance to get any additional lives during any of this, either. [SPOILER END]
Also, by the time you do make it to the bosses, they generally tend to be pretty disappointing. There's no real sense of progression within most of them (minus Matthew.) They often just feel like stronger regular enemies.
I should mention that there are shops scattered throughout where you can replenish your health and willpower, even if most don't offer 1ups. Even then, though, there is no indication pointing you toward them. I honestly didn't discover there were places you could enter for a long time. I went through my entire first playthrough without knowing about or using these, except for in the shopping district (and I still only found out about those from a guide.) It's more of a visual complaint, but I think that this had such a huge effect on my enjoyment of the gameplay that it's worth mentioning here.
And still, despite that ridiculousness, the entire game becomes an absolute cakewalk once you discover the cheats - of which there are two in particular I want to discuss. The first is a sword which deals incredible amounts of ranged damage; it's difficult to turn that down after playing the same levels so many times. The second is an easy way to grind for money; once you enter the code, you die and use up one life for 50 coins. If you have a snack item onhand, that is consumed instead of a life. After maybe half an hour, you'll have at least 600 dollars. This is more than enough to unlock the most valuable shop in the game. After paying 500 to do so, you are given access to both 1ups (up to 9) and stat boosts, all for 4.95 apiece. If you max all of your stats here, you're basically unstoppable. Keep in mind that these cheats are given to you with no penalty, not even an achievement lock.
That shop is a core issue in and of itself, too. Let's say that instead of using cheats, you save up to unlock it organically... By the time you get enough, you very well could be 3/4ths of the way through the entire game, making it almost useless at that point. If you're NOT far in, it's most likely because you're struggling to progress - which is because you're not spending anything on the other stat boosts made readily available. You'll be stuck grinding in the early levels then, which will extend the game's playtime and might ruin any fun you could otherwise get from the experience.
I do like the RPG elements (such as the stats and the money system) in theory. I just don't feel like they work here, though. The grinding doesn't work because the combat is too repetitive to warrant it. The level system doesn't work because the progression is awful (I was level 12/16 before I beat the first boss in my last playthrough, keeping in mind that I replayed the first world a few times.) The stats don't work because they'll make you overpowered with only a few purchases. Everything is just poorly thought out in my eyes. It's all individual factors that add up to the entire game feeling unbalanced.
That's not to say that the RPG stuff should've been cut. I think the game would be much more bland without them. I just wish more time had went into making them actually good.
By my last playthrough, I had to make my own fun by denying myself cheats and trying to play in a way that was optimized to the mechanics. Even then, there were points where I'd feel like I was cheating only by using the tools readily available to me. I'd beat down a boss with a weapon and think to myself," This is too easy, I'm getting in a million hits right now," and I'd end up throwing the weapon away to try to make it an equal fight. That's how you know you've failed on a fundamental level.
On top of all of that, there's really no point in there being such a wide array of playable characters here. As I've briefly mentioned, all of them have identical movesets, minus one or two special attacks. The unique animations can only get you so far - especially when your DLC characters largely don't have even that. This really hurts the replay value for me.
I do like how a lot of the enemies have their own unique attacks. I didn't even notice that until one of my later playthroughs. For example, one enemy does a chicken taunt which drains your willpower. Another is a thief who knocks some of your money out of you. That's cool.
There is some solid foundation in all of this. However, all of it together just doesn't add up to great gameplay. Nothing fits like it should. While it can be fun at times, the wheels start to fall off at some point or another. I think I could see myself picking this up and enjoying it for about 20 minutes every few months. I probably won't be coming back to it for any extended amount of time, though.
Overall, 2/5.

Worldbuilding:
There is often a distinct void of personality here. A lot of the fun fantasy aspects of Scott Pilgrim's world are kind of shrugged off; the loss of the plot and humor are both big factors in this. I still think they could have done more in the worldbuilding though, even without either of those things.
There is some pretty nice environmental design. The locations are great, in big part thanks to the art and music.
There's quite a bit of references to other video games, too. While I don't think taking stuff from other things makes your thing good, it is undeniably fun to see - and it fits Scott Pilgrim really well.
One other cool thing is that a lot of the background NPCs are characters from the comics. As someone who's only seen the movie, I was still able to recognize a few of them. It's a neat little way to fit in people who would have been completely sidelined otherwise.
Overall, 3/5.

Extra Category - Achievements:
I had trouble with achievements glitching out. It happened at least two or three times.
I don't think most of them are that good, or add much to your playthroughs. I dunno, it's not really worth it in my eyes. It just made me stick with the game for a lot longer than I really wanted to.
Overall, 2/5.

Overall game score: 3/5. Scott Pilgrim has great art and music, but fails in nearly every other area. The combat can be fun, but it's ruined by balance issues. The story and worldbuilding are completely lacking, which is a huge disappointment. Time and budget constraints turned what could have been a fantastic game into an average one. I think nostalgia has really blinded people here.

Great adaptation of the source material with a killer soundtrack and great gameplay even if it is a little slow near the beginning until you level up and get better moves. Highly recommend if you're a fan of the series

I am a HUGE fan of Scott pilgrim. I have a poster, a shirt, and the Blu-Ray copy of the movie. And This Game Is Fantastic! And I Am Not A Huge Beat 'Em Up Fan.

This game is actually a super fun short beat'em up and worth buying if you ever find it on sale. Its loaded with plenty of great references to the book, great pixel art, and awesome music. It portrays Toronto more accurately than Toronto portrays Toronto.

The controls can feel a little bit clunky at first, but once you get used to them and upgrade your character a bit, it becomes super fast paced and fun. the only problem with the game-play is the final level is a bit of a slog.

Also a quick warning if you plan on starting this game for the first time: level up Ramona, she is the only way to unlock the true ending, don't waste all your levels on Scott.

Immensely charming pixel-art, visual design and music all carry this. The actual gameplay is maybe a bit lacking in some regards but I had a good time overall.

I love the Scott Pilgrim movie, anime and want to eventually read the original source material, but I just couldn’t get myself through this game. It didn’t click for me like the others did, and gameplay just feels like trash to me.

Scott Pilgrim is a really solid beat 'em up with beautiful sprite graphics and stylish combat, and a decent enough leveling system that you can cheese through to make fights be more cathartic. But you can't deny that while it definitely revived the genre of beat 'em ups, there's been a lot better that have come out since then. But regardless, it is still fun.

Also, buyer beware when you're dealing with Limited Run Games. My copy of this game was stuck in limbo for 21 months because of sheer incompetence. Sometimes it's just better to get digitally.

Authentically retro and authentically difficult! Both Scott Pilgrim fans will find the (like 4th now) new iteration on the story refreshing, and beat-em-ups fans should enjoy this title's gameplay. However, players should be prepared to put in some elbow grease to level up their chosen character to meet the often harsh difficulty spikes SPVTWTGCE can dish out.
