2021 Ranked

An ongoing ranked list of games I've played (so far) from 2021.

I'm limiting this to games I've actually played a finished release version of (insert New World joke here).

Pitch-perfect narrative that reveals character through the belongings of a person as they move in to new lodgings at various times of their life. It made me feel wistful and a bit nostalgic, so the ideas hit emotionally. It's also a bit of an ironic shell - the idea that we could be summed up by the stuff we put in boxes when we move is gently satirical. It's a light, thoughtful, amusing delight.
New World has had its teething problems for a core gamer audience, who expect a game they can return to every day. But for me the experience was nigh on perfect - a wonderful immersive world, the right level of challenge, a bunch of interesting systems, some stunning visuals and incredible sound design - I loved most of my time with it and was happy to move on once I'd had my fill.
Simple concept of linking planets to build supply routes, but the game has a huge amount of depth and variety within that - I feel on every run I get a little wiser. Love the incidental music too!
A perfect tone, length, level of complexity - a light narrative tale with heavy undertones. There were tears, and I wouldn't change a frame of it.
