the thin veil of reality

third list in a row with a similar theme I guess i have just been thinking a lot about this topic.

many spoilers!

games where our world or the player behind the screen are directly acknowledged and inserted into the story (as an otherworldly being). i want to try to avoid putting games that break the 4th wall as a joke as i feel that's not substantial enough for this list.

accepting suggestions

Guardian spirits are literally you, the player, and often you are given the task of directing and advising the character you're "possessing" (who are not devoid of their own will)

this is true for Origins too

both chapters have been messing around with this to a very big extent with the soul actually being the player overtaking Kris

the cycle is a means of keeping a videogame a videogame by not making it leak into the real world. the will is pretty much an outside force giving strength to the player character

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
you as the player get thrown away at the end by Raiden, who realizes they're their own person and not a videogame avatar

OneShot and Mother 3 immediately come to mind as some of the best examples of this

The Elder Scrolls (mostly Morrowind), Metal Gear Solid 1, Deadpool, Imscared and of course the original Undertale.

First Skylanders game fits this, the others are spotty about it but your role as Portal Master summoning characters in is heavily written into/acknowledged in the first game, first level has an NPC directly speaking to and acknowledging you

I believe this is a big point for establishing the premise of Tearaway/Tearaway Unfolded

I think the visual novel "You, me and her" fits this theme

Labyrinth of Galleria and Labyrinth of Refrain both have the same method of this, where you as the player are summoned into their world as a spirit. Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge also do this but in a sci-fi way instead of pure fantasy.
I think it’s really funny how both of our lists that are kinda about the same thing (for the most part) end up on the popular lists tab at the same time. Really good picks for your list btw 🖤

Great list, undertale?

In "OFF" the protagonist directly acknowledges the player as his master and even refers to you by your name, which you type in in the intro

Ending E of NieR Automata vaguely references the player in dialogue, and what you do gameplay-wise is very meta.
Icey is basically if The Stanley Parable was a serious action game.
I'm not sure if this counts, since you're not an entity in Tunic, but the game contains pages of the instruction manual, complete with notes and drawings from the previous owner in some of the margins. The "Holy Cross" aspect especially feels like it's leaning on the fourth wall.

This isn't very well-known, but the premise of Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram is that VO arcade cabs have been sent from the future to detect potential VO pilots. The first few missions are VR training, but in the last couple ones you're supposed to be controlling a real VO operating in the future.
