The Top 20

Because the number 5 fucking sucks
Honestly this is a pretty lazy list I don't update often but it generally captures my feelings/rankings
Definitive release versions of each game only, no DLC/expansions, currently no multiplayer games

After a long period of playing nothing but multiplayer games, I received a switch for my birthday and chose this game to accompany it. This became the first singleplayer game I completely no-life'd, playing it every chance I could and rarely feeling the urge to put it down. Breath of the Wild single-handedly changed my perspective on game design and games as a whole.
On the surface, this game seemingly should not be good. Quest usually aren't as grandiose or intuitive as the next two elder scrolls games, npc AI is near non-existent, combat is rng based? To counter this, Morrowind takes it unwelcoming features and ties it to its unwelcoming atmosphere, creating a world that is so interesting by itself that you will want to explore every inch of the map. Also the loot progression is satisfying, so that's a plus.
Little can be said about Outer Wilds without spoiling the fun, so I'll just say I have never played a game with more clever puzzles and tying said puzzle into its poignant message.
If you didn't play chain of memories the story side of this game may be soured, but personally I think the story is the best in the series due to the Roxas side of the journey. Truly though, the gameplay is what makes this game king. While the level design is certainly less interesting than KH1, it is also less frustrating. The combat is fast, really everything is fast, and the idea to split the world visits into 2 means i never got bored playing this game as I was constantly being sent to the wide variety of worlds present. Some killer bosses as well.
This is not only a great game on its own, but the fact this came out in 1994, man does this game feel lightyears ahead with its game design sensibilities of guiding the player without making them hit the manual like so many games did back in the day. Game design 101 right here.
What starts as a standard adventure romp comparable to a Dragon Quest game, ends up revealing its true self as something much more unique. This game has a plethora of RPG mechanics to dive into, but that makes it overwhelming. The field skills provide a sense of progression and give greater intensive to level blades and go to previous areas, but they also can slow the pacing. The story pacing guides this games transformation well as to not make it jarring, but can through people off at the start. So many ideas of this game can be seen as genius or flawed from different angels, but at the end of the day I adore the gameplay and this game features my favorite cast of characters, ever, so really no matter what I absolutely love it.
While much of this game is to the credit of the original, fixing up the Xen portion of the game really improves the experience enough for this to stand on its own. I struggle to want to put a mostly faithful remake a 10/10 and ahead of its original form and it's something I go back and forth on all the time. Solid shooting with fantastic level design, pacing, and atmosphere. Also helped pioneer a style of immersive storytelling.
For how common games that try to subvert the tropes of the JRPG have come up, this game wears them on its sleeve and ends up being the better game.
I'm not one to like the older style JRPG's, I value characters in these games above all else due to how long the journey tends to be. FF7 is the earliest example of a JRPG I have played that has characters I truly enjoyed. Also the gameplay was surprisingly decent to me and the graphics are actually kino you're just mean.
I flip flop on if I like 7 or 9 more, but I think 9 has some lower lows, but overall comparable to 7 in gameplay and characters.
Thanks to the rereleases and this game just being really popular people sure do love to shit on it but really, even as a morrowind fan, this game is amazing. Great atmosphere enhanced by the ost, interesting world, neat changes to the RPG mechanics even if some of them seem to simplify things to much (let me wear a robe over my armor please Todd). What I can really praise this game for is just how interesting so many of the side quests are in a gaming landscape full of fetch quests.
Personally the combination of a lesser combat system and characters I don't enjoy as much means I do believe 2 is the better game, but 1 certainly has better pacing.
This game can be surprisingly linear at times even if it's good at hiding it, but the level design is great, Samus controls great, and this game has the best bosses in the series.
This and Dread may be recency bias but I don't give a single shit about story complaint I just like seeing press turn icon flash lol
dunkey has annoying fans
