What I played for BGC2: Blast to the Past with thoughts

dropped games are not ranked in any order and may include petty reasons.

Game list here

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
The biggest surprise of the event for me. I rescued all the people (they dance for you 😊) and improved my tower time by a good bit. Going for all the gems seems masochistic, especially with those x2 ones. I need to play the other Klonoa games.
Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar Heroes
Yeah ok, Cuphead devs loved this game. It made me stay up later than I wanted to. I need to do coop eventually too.
Ape Escape
Ape Escape
It takes a little adjustment for these controls, but you end up getting a great game that is unfortunately hurt by being forced to leave stages. So many times I had two monkeys in front of me, and I caught one, ending the stage instantly. Why even show all the monkeys on a stage? Why not make them postgame since you already have a new gadget? Anyways, maybe I'll go back and 100%, but it really put me off it. I am excited to check out the sequels and hope they change it up.
Mega Man X4
Mega Man X4
Replay (using X legacy collection) - I forgot how boring X was in this game. I must have repressed it hard, thankfully Zero carries it. This wouldn't let me screenshot with shareX so I guess playing on PS1 was better.
Mega Man 4
Mega Man 4
Replay - Yep it's still good

Cosmic Smash
Cosmic Smash
It is deceptively simple, but I suck at it. I just went through a couple of easy routes but would like to go back for others.
Mischief Makers
Mischief Makers
Honestly, this looked unappealing as fuck to me, and hearing it described as unfinished didn't help much. Actually playing it though is fun! Short, bite-sized levels with so much variety in each one. Crazy how this goes on for 52 levels, yet I don't think any of them were that bad at all (I ignore 4–3). The bosses were very creative, and as my first exposure to 2D Treasure (I didn't even know they made this until now), I'm excited for their other games. You can also A rank stages, and each one has a golden gem to collect. I didn't get all of them this time, but I want to come back later and 100% it. I will say the pot mixing/catching stages do slow it down a bit, but I'm sure some people love it. Glad it got recommended by Jane.
Crash Team Racing
Crash Team Racing
I just expected a shitty spinoff trying to be like Mario Kart, then Aku Aku told me to press L1 for a boost. I just finished the adventure mode, but even there, I didn't do all of the relics or crystal challenges. The actual races were great, and it really is so satisfying to get the triple boost. The bosses were a bit of a letdown since each one is a 1v1. Once you get the rocket or turbo, it feels like they will never catch up to you unless you mess up. Then you just hear them for the entire track, throwing their million items behind them to hit no one.

There is so much more I could and want to do eventually, but I should save it for when I'm done with the platformers.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
I've never really touched this for some reason, but it's pretty nice. Maybe it's because I'm playing it as an in-between game, but it really stuck with me more than other 2D Mario games. Every level made me want to explore them here, and the castles were really good. It might actually get me to like Tetris Attack more.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
I was initially put off by it, but a recommendation from Silver got me to try it again. Yeah, it is very forgiving with the checkpoints, compared to other games from this era. The dagger is really broken, while the other weapons seemed like a hindrance. I did like the ninja star but then I realized it doesn't have infinite shots like the dagger. It is very funny how most chests are "bad." I didn't do the extra loop or whatever, but maybe later when I get in the mood for it.
Sin and Punishment
Sin and Punishment
The first run felt pretty awkward, trying to get used to the controls. I got better the longer I played and when I realized just how important the sword is.
PowerSlave
PowerSlave
Played using Powerslave Exhumed. It was a pretty good time, and I really liked the levels. The enemies and weapons don't really stand out, but it was interesting how ammo worked. It's shared, as in every pickup can replenish whatever weapon you have equipped, but when it comes to actually using the ammo, it is separate for each weapon. Kind of like a mega man if you will. It's a bit weird how random item drops are from pots; you would think it would be consistent, but what do I know? I will say the biggest annoyance is how long it takes enemy drops to spawn since it does force you to go a bit slower or backtrack...
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon
Worried I wouldn't have liked this after Rez, but it was pretty good. I'll definitely check out the sequel and maybe the RPG, but it's a it's a shame I'll miss out on Orta.
Brave Fencer Musashi
Brave Fencer Musashi
Nice little parody of JRPGs that might just be a little annoying with the day/time cycle on shops. Otherwise, I liked the dungeons, and the music was great.
Ristar
Ristar
Great game that seems to play very similar to 2D Sonic, from what little I know. I had a blast just trying to find little secrets and, sometimes, the bonus stage. Maybe I should play those 2D Sonics if they're going to be of the same or even better quality...
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Kazooie
Probably the most I felt like my time was wasted in a collectathon. I spent so much time walking around because I didn't realize I needed a transformation. The fps was pretty bad in the worlds with large objects often feeling like single digits in Clanker's Cavern, Gobi's Valley, Click Clock Wood, and Bubblegloop Swamp. I also kind of wish there was some tracker for the Mumbo tokens. It already tells you when you get 100 notes twice, but nothing if you get all the skulls in a level. Despite all that, the levels were still pretty nice to explore.
Tetris Attack
Tetris Attack
Not my favourite skin of this, but it's hard to knock down the gameplay.
Crash Bandicoot: Warped
Crash Bandicoot: Warped
I never played the originals and tried the remakes a while ago, but bounced very quickly. I don't know if my tastes changed or what, but this was good to go through. Maybe it's even worth going back to the others.
Dynamite Headdy
Dynamite Headdy
It might be a little too simple, but it has a nice idea with the setting. I really liked the tower and the boss that switched your perspective in scene 5. I want more bosses with that trope maybe a future list...
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
I never played the originals and tried the remakes a while ago, but bounced very quickly. I don't know if my tastes changed or what, but this was good to go through. Maybe it's even worth going back to the others.
Shatterhand
Shatterhand
I like the gimmick with the robot (I was still seeing new combos until the end), and it is pretty breezy until the final stage. Those gravity jumps were awful to me, and then I didn't even get to refight my favourite boss.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Nice pleasant game that I will definitely come back to when I play other Kirbys. It's fun to try out all the combos.
Rocket Knight Adventures
Rocket Knight Adventures
There were a bit too many shmup sections that I didn't like, and yeah, I know the name should have been a giveaway. The rest was pretty good.
Blood
Blood
Replay (using Fresh Supply) - It's still Blood, but it feels off compared to GDX, which I've spent a long time with. Using dolls in general made me damage myself a lot more, and the timing with crushers is way off (bad). I also couldn't get the FOV or mouse to feel right.
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
For lack of a better term, this is too much of a cinematic platformer. So many points in the level lead into a loading screen, a bit too many cutscenes, it is very guided (other than the tomb of the ancients), extremely pointless combat, and it's very hard to die. Maybe my expectations were just off, so I guess it's on me.
Ridge Racer Type 4
Ridge Racer Type 4
It's a backloggd darling, but I'm just not a car guy. It was alright, and I'm really thankful the alternate view mode exists. Music is nice, so it was a good hour spent.
Monster World IV
Monster World IV
Nothing really special, just your average adventure platformer. I did like the story and your buddy for the entire game...
The last stage is easily the worst part.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. 3
I've played a bunch of this before, but never a full run. The minibosses and autoscrollers drag this down hard for me.
Bangai-O
Bangai-O
It's almost too mindless of a game, with a lot of levels just bleeding into each other. It has almost the exact same structure for every level and can really test you on how much you want to do. It seems to be made to play in short bursts over a long period of time, so it might be my fault for playing through it straight.
Rez
Rez
Yeah it's nice to look at.
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure
One of the better ones with high highs (Casinopolis, Gamma, Knuckles, snowboarding, Sonic's first stage, Amy's hammer vault) and low lows (everything else Sonic, Tails, everything else Amy, Super Sonic).
Crusader of Centy
Crusader of Centy
Do not go into this expecting anything like a 2D Zelda. There's no interconnected world here; you have an overworld map here almost like an old JRPG and it is mostly linear. The only similarity is a boy with a sword. While the "items" in this are pretty unique, you don't really need to use most of them, and I just stuck with the same few most of the time. The puzzles stay way too easy for the entire game, all into an abrupt? ending, especially for how short this was.
Disney's Goof Troop
Disney's Goof Troop
Just an okay game for me. It was supposed to be my race challenge, but I died on stage 4 boss, and didn't save passwords/states...I played it again since Pang convinced me.
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
More like starring Goemon and allies. A mini Zelda-like in 3D with one of the worst cameras. Did they really add a different crawl for Ebisumaru just to get that credits scene? I don't think I even used crawl the entire game other than centering the camera.
Comix Zone
Comix Zone
It looks great until you actually play it. I can see myself enjoying it a lot more on the second playthrough, maybe in the future.
Omega Boost
Omega Boost
Not really for me. I just did the normal playthrough, and I think I've had enough.
Little Samson
Little Samson
Idk I couldn't really get into it. It's fine.
Burning Rangers
Burning Rangers
It's really funny how these firefighters take damage like sonic. It was alright for a quick run, but I don't see myself ever caring about going for better ranks. This chugs HARD and I am unsure if it was always like this.
Beetle Adventure Racing!
Beetle Adventure Racing!
Maybe I was too hard on Ridge Racer 4. I kind of got tired of this, with each Grand Prix being the exact same but with one new track. It's a bit weird of a game to have secret paths and powerup boxes. The points boxes seemed pointless since you need so many to continue/reset GP but you could always just be fine with 2nd place or just restart the entire GP. Nitro boxes were cool, but also only one-time use?
Drop'd
Mr. Driller
Mr. Driller
Not for me.
Snowboard Kids 2
Snowboard Kids 2
I don't think I enjoyed anything here.

Wave Race 64
Wave Race 64
I finished a couple of championships and really wasn't feeling like doing the rest.
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!
I got the gist of it, and it seems more like a nostalgia game. There are other platformers to play...
Roll Away
Roll Away
Not sure why, but I expected a monkey ball-like. There is no way I'm playing this for all the levels.
Einhänder
Einhänder
I couldn't get into it. Maybe I've played too many shmups and don't care about them? Maybe I just want to play other stuff? It's good but not for me atm.
Bomberman Hero
Bomberman Hero
It's a perfect game if you're feeling very sleepy. It doesn't help that half the time the game was playing at 5 FPS. I dropped after world 1 and think the only worthwhile thing is the music.
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
Why did there used to be so many duck games? Switching directions here felt so jarring, and everything but the platforming was bad. I finished 2 levels (10? stages) and couldn't stand it anymore.

Radiant Silvergun
Radiant Silvergun
I think I'm just all Shmuped up. See Einhander.
Everything You Didn't Get to Do
Everything You Didn't Get to Do
The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda
The one I want to play soon but just ran out of steam at the event.
Alien Soldier
Alien Soldier
I need to save this for another time...
Deus Ex
Deus Ex
Maybe I need to save this for another time pt2...
