Games that MORE indie developers should take inspiration from
Basically the opposite of PKMudkipz' list here: https://www.backloggd.com/u/PKMudkipz/list/games-that-indie-developers-should-be-temporarily-banned-from-taking-inspiration-from/

Bubble Bobble - more single screen clear platformers pls
card game RPGs - not roguelikes or online competitive, just regular ass rpgs with card collecting
Non Pokémon inspired monster tamers
very niche but games that mishmash a lot of genres again in a retro style. Retro game challenge and 198x are big ones I think of.
@Yammander Do you have a specific example you want on the list? If not I'm just gonna put SMT on there.
@Legailmao Good one to bring up. Game Center CX is based.

the greater degree of analogue control in Mario 64
the range of movement & positioning during combat and pacing in Ninja Gaiden Black
i will give one leg for a new fighting game more focused in tactics and with less combos with 1000 hits
inspirations: sf ii, tekken pre-7

Ape Escape
I'd love to see more games take inspiration from Chibi Robo or Katamari Damacy to be honest
Also, more games that are tightly constructed 2D platformers that aren't monstrously difficult nor metroidvanias (something like Drill Dozer) would be great

not sure if I agree with mario 64 (mario-inspired collectathons are kind of common) but all the other suggestions so far are great. Thanks everyone
Steam~Hearts because more games should have softcore porn
Interesting item management like in Resident Evil
developers took so much inspiration from d1e1, look where it got you
THE KIRBY SERIES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THE KIRBY SERIES
You already put Mega Man, but I want more indies to specifically take after the close quarters/aggressive gameplay of Mega Man Zero. Haven’t seen the it nearly as much as the Classic & X series.
Ultima Underworld (maybe System Shock, either one of those) and Thief The Dark Project would be great picks, more stealth games should have and light and sound-based stealth system, as well as dungeon crawlers.
Suggestions: Rez, Yakuza, Sonic, Radiant Silvergun, Strider, Ace Combat, Umineko, Disco Elysium, Shadow of the colossus, Nier.
SMT, just for more dungeon crawlers or dungeon-focused rpgs with a great battle system. Ex: Strange Journey.
Spyro the Dragon, there's 3D platformers but they always seem to take inspiration from that damn bear and bird.
Been a while since I checked the comments on this list sorry everyone ><
I removed DOOM from the list because I feel like at this point the indie-gaming scene has become saturated with mediocre "boomer-shooters". I agree with most of the recent suggestions.

gonna say god hand
we need 3D beat em ups. we've solved 2D ones with streets of rage, but there's so much potential out there to muck around with those ideas in a 3D space

Frogger, like the 3D ones and Zap One Wicked Cricket.
Ultima 4. We need more games focused around the exploration of made up moral systems and no true Big Bad.
@Vee I saw you mentioned Spyro so I just wanted to say that a Spyro-inspired game called Cavern of Dreams was released recently, in case you weren't aware. I haven't played it yet so I can't attest to its quality.
Anyway, I'd like to see more games akin to Punch-Out!! . Very focused, very simple, all about reading your opponents actions and countering appropriately. There's been tributes in a few games recently but nothing that really captures the core of it entirely.

@DeltaWDunn it pains me to see it still tarnished by the tendrils of Rareware, but alas it's on my list now. I actually just played Thunder Ray not too recently and was disappointed by how mashy it's gameplay was and the unreadability of some of it's attacks, it feels like the dev forgot about how meticulous the patterns were even in Super Punch-Out. We still need a good one of those.
