Games Played in 2023 (Ranked)

These are games that are new to me that I played this year! Each note contains a link to a review I made for each game I played, along with some extended thoughts! Enjoy!

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
My review (I do go into a bit of childhood trauma here, as well as the vivid detail of the death of a pet of mine, so if you're sensitive to those types of things, fair warning): https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1016819

I'm not sure if I've necessarily said all the things I've wanted to say within my review of Majora's Mask, but it's by far my favorite review I've written, and by far my favorite game from this year. I experimented a lot, and I was deeply inspired by Tim Rogers after reading his Final Fantasy 6 review. His ability to make a review that not only was a self reflective digestion of his life growing up, but a review that had themes. That review really let me know that I could do something so raw and personal like that in a review, while also framing it in a narrative. This was the first time I managed to make myself cry from my own writing, and I can only hope it does the same for you!

I don't think I'll ever be the same after I've experienced Majora's Mask. We live in a Post-Majora's Mask Spike world here folks, there's no going back!

One specific aspect I failed to talk about in my review were the more lighter elements of the game. I focused solely on the nightmarish qualities since that's what deeply affected me the most, but it's not a full-sized picture of what Majora's Mask actually is, which is a belief in hope and happiness despite the the omnipresence of death. That's important, because without it, Majora's Mask would be needlessly brutal. Majora's Mask is still a nightmare, but the game let's you wake up from that nightmare.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
My review (slight lore spoilers): https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/828909/

Every time I think about Tears of the Kingdom, I get fairly nervous about whether or not when I come back to it, I'll enjoy the game as much as I did on my first playthrough.

Then I'll see a clip online of someone doing the most insane things within the physics engine and think ""god, this game fucking rules"

I do still feel a bit exhausted at the thought of returning to the game, but that has more so to do with returning to Hyrule Kingdom. I would love to come back and explore the many physics quirks and fusion combinations I could muster, but exploring the same-but-remixed Hyrule Kingdom as I did back in 2019 prevents me from jumping back in as soon as I desire. Still, my review holds up with how I currently feel: Tears of the Kingdom is bar none exceptional in it's game design, and is absolutely my favorite game to have come out in 2023.

2

Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate
My review (contains spoilers): https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1074332/

Steins;Gate is fantastic! One of the best time travel concepts I've seen, where everything feels grounded in reality, despite the fact that they managed to make a time machine out of a microwave. I do still feel a slight bit disappointed in the ending, since I think the climax could have been more elaborate, but the characters and time travel mechanics keep that feeling disbarred. I'm curious about Steins;Gate 0, as well as Chaos;Head and the many other VNs within the same branch, but those will have to be on the bucket list.

3

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1123920/

Oh, how I long to return to the world of Elysium someday. My review pretty much says everything I want to say about the game, so I recommend just reading it. There's so many little moments that stick out in my head about the game, but I'd just be retreading on what I already think of Disco Elysium, which is that it's absolutely marvelous!

4

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/992160/

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk being fifth here feels like such a shame, because it deserves so much praise. I really do think that Bomb Rush has improved upon the Jet Set Radio formula substantially, to the point where it's surpassed them. The game kind of cheats by taking everything from those games and mixing them into a blender, but by god, it's better because of it.

5

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1100552/

I pretty much said everything I wanted within the review itself, so I highly recommend reading it. I'm proud of this one, I knew exactly what I wanted to say, wrote it all down, did some light editing and pressed send. All from the heart!

6

Super Mario RPG
Super Mario RPG
My review: https://backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1158822/

All the Mario game reviews I've felt I've nailed this year, so I recommend just reading this one! Loved this game, despite how easy the game was. I'm REALLY looking forward to eventually replaying this one, and if I do, I'm absolutely replaying the original

7

Picayune Dreams
Picayune Dreams
My review: https://backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1188909/

I say pretty much all i need to say with this one. One of those games that appeals to me specifically. Somehow both light and extremely dark at the same time.

8

Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/719189/

There's so much more to say about Resident Evil 4! Something I left out, mostly because I haven't played many Resident Evil games, is that this game not only changed the industry with how ground breaking it is, but Resident Evil as a whole was never the same after this. A combination between high-octane action and horror was a working formula. Of course, after playing Resident Evil 5 and 6, the quirks that made Resident Evil 4 so damn good comes down to pacing, level design, combat design, and a whole lot of other elements. Resident Evil 4 is just non-stop fun.

9

Hi-Fi Rush
Hi-Fi Rush
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/646514/

Out of maybe everything that came out this year, I probably think about Hi-Fi Rush the most. Everything about this game is just so charming and full of love. Those musical set pieces have stuck with me, and jumping back into Hi-fi Rush sounds mighty tempting. But there's so many other games to play! Agh!

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
My review (contains spoilers): https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/909213/

Much like all of Kodaka's games, I find myself left thinking about the themes and characters well after I've finished it and Rain Code is no exception. I think I still can't believe the twist to this game. I enjoyed the characters to this one, but I'm not sure they've had the same lasting impacted as some of the danganronpa cast. I'm hoping this game gets a sequel to irons out some of the weaker parts of the game, because this series could be something that surpasses Danganronpa if it played it's cards right.

12

Pikmin
Pikmin
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/964329/

Another review I'm fairly proud of and says almost everything I wanted to say! I recommend reading this one!

One thing I will say though is that playing Majora's Mask has really put more into perspective the feelings I was having while playing Pikmin. The anxieties of failure stem from Majora's Mask, not from Pikmin. I'm hoping to beat Dead Rising 1 to complete this trilogy of beating my childhood fears, but we'll see!

13

Metroid Prime Remastered
Metroid Prime Remastered
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/674383/

I'm still a bit disappointed Metroid Prime Remaster didn't actually fix any of the problems Prime has, because it comes so close to becoming one of my favorite Metroid games, but I just can't say I love the game as much as Super, Dread and Zero Mission. The game is just so special though, it's such a mood of a game.

14

Pizza Tower
Pizza Tower
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/656078/

I pretty much said what I want to say with this review, but it still only feels like I'm scratching the surface. For christ's sake, I still haven't even gotten a P-rank, I haven't played the game enough. I'll probably return to the game once they add more content to it.

15

Signalis
Signalis
My review: (contains spoilers) https://backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1214979/

I've never played many survival horror type games, but Signalis has really sold me on the appeal to the gameplay structure. I'm still not 100% sure what was happening in this game's plot, but I'm still intrigued by it's mystic. I'm not a big horror fan, but this is one of those games that I think even non-horror fans like myself will still enjoy.

16

Luigi's Mansion 3
Luigi's Mansion 3
My review: https://backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1190284/

All my Mario reviews have been ones I'm really proud of, so I recommend reading them! Luigi's Mansion 3 is a great little time, and I'm glad I played it to break down the barriers from my teenage years.

17

Dragon Quest
Dragon Quest
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/610407/

God, it feels like I played this game like 2 years ago. I'd probably re-write this review, since I've learned so much as a writer since then, and there's parts that just aren't good here. At times, it doesn't even make sense. Final Fantasy 7 and Persona 1 aren't at all medieval fantasy, but it's included in this list of gripes brought upon from those games? I understand where I'm coming from, I had made a list titled "things that annoy me in JRPGs" when I was 16, and these were included on the list, but it's not very clear why that was included. That said, I do think I make some interesting points here that are worth reading, they just need to be restructured to fit better.

Something I failed to mention was that I was playing an enhanced version of this game on the Switch, which made certain aspects of the game design stand out a bit more than they would have on an NES. Not to take away those feelings of discovery that I had - it's still incredibly rewarding - it's just probably not as obvious within the original, and I may have ended up more frustrated if I had tried the original game.

This game really is a lesson in re-learning that preferences become trumped by a piece of media's execution. Turn-based JRPGs have copied from Dragon Quest, but have failed to retain the lessons the game teaches you about game design. It's systems are absolutely flawless, and that's genuinely surprising from someone who never expected to be charmed by a game not only this old, but that goes against my own tastes.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames!
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/660109/

Still haven't returned to this one, I'm terrible with replaying games! Tetris has occupied my pick-up-and-play game slot of choice. Sometimes Panel De Pon overtakes it, but it's hard to pull myself away from them. Review says pretty much all I wanted to say about the game itself though!

The Last of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II
My review (contains major spoilers and is basically an entire plot breakdown): https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/766036/

I had WAY too much to say about this game, much more than I anticipated going into it. Hell, even now I have a ton of things to add for this note section. For those of you who want to be spared the sheer length of the full review, the TL;DR is this: I walked in with low expectations, I walked out pleasantly surprised by the gameplay and just what Naughty Dog has learned from their foray into realistic third person shooters. I did not like the story and it felt like it needed a second draft from the many stretches the game makes to hit specific plot beats, but the gameplay, exploration, and atmosphere were genuinely really good! Probably the best gameplay out of any of the Uncharted games or the first Last of Us!

I have two things that I can add as an addendum to this review. I no longer agree with my statement of "The rope mechanic is probably the most fun I've had with any Naughty Dog game post-Jak." I hadn't replayed Jak II in over a decade, and I did not have fun with the game as you'll see with the Jak II review. So, let it be stated here and now that it's the most fun I've had in a Naughty Dog game since Crash Bandicoot. Maybe Jak 3 will make this statement true again? Who knows!

The bigger aspect that I would add to this review is the frame of reference with my inclusion of mentioning Lisa The Painful. LISA The Painful has a similar story to The Last of Us, and to me, it's a better executed story of that similar premise. They aren't one-to-one, but they move you through the same motions in terms of plot. So, to have a story like that become watered down and not as effective felt like a slap to the face. It's amusing to me too that both Lisa The Painful/Joyful and The Last of Us have a sequel (or in Joyful's case an expansion) that goes into the same exact themes of revenge, and both end up being fairly shaky in terms of writing. If I were to ever get into the rigamaroll of making videos, I think a TLOU and LISA compare and contrast video would be interesting.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/776689/

I like Jak 1, I think? I need to reiterate from this review is that I probably should replay the game on original hardware instead of the PS4 port. In fact, the same may even be said for Jak II, but that game's problems are too much to handle. I could definitely see myself having more fun with Jak 1 if not for the input lag.

Oh, and I did learn about the mix of western and eastern tidbit from B-Mask and I feel like I needed to state that here since it's been bothering me that I stated it without saying where it came from.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/638824/

These past couple of years have been a deep dive into the Zelda series, and putting this game into perspective is interesting. At this point in the series, the formula has been done for years, while still maintaining a feeling of freshness with each entry. And while the game tries it's own ideas, gimmicks, and concepts, it's very easy to see why the designers started to become fatigued by the formula. Out of all the 3D Zelda's I've played, this game is the one that most often fell flat for me. It's still a really enjoyable game for what it is, and there's certain aspects I love about this game more than I do with Breath of the Wild, but it leaves a lot to be desired with what it brings to the table.

Goodbye Volcano High
Goodbye Volcano High
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1013135/

I think if there's one thing to be said about this game still that I'd like to emphasize, it's that the game has a lot of heart. The characters really make the game stand out much more than it otherwise would. It's a testament to grounding your characters and making them feel real adding much more to an experience. I still can't say I related or cared much the entirety of the game itself, but this is one of those stories that where if you relate more to it, it'll deeply impact you.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
My review: (It's best to read these in order!) https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1089336/

I still feel a bit torn on Heavensward. On the one hand, it is indeed the best Final Fantasy XIV has been, but at the same time, I still don't really feel strongly about what I played. There's no real feelings of genuine satisfaction and enjoyment from me while I was playing the expansion. After I was finished, I felt like I could continue, but there was no real joy in wanting to continue. It felt more like I was filling the void for entertainment more than I was feeling any true sense of joy. I don't exactly have any desire to continue doing the rest of post-patch and Stormblood, mostly because I have more fun with social interactions than I do with any of the gameplay, even in Heavensward. I get excited talking to people more than playing the damn game.

28

Jak II
Jak II
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1138994/

The TL;DR for this one is: This game is a weird mash up of a lot of things that have are there solely to appeal to the then changing landscape of the industry. It feels weird putting this game so low, especially when as a kid, I enjoyed the game a lot. I just didn't enjoy the game very much. I'd definitely replay it over some of the other games on this list, but it feels especially weird to put Heavensward over this game.

Also a let down, just like Pulseman! How come you couldn't be good, Dreamland 2? Why'd you have to be tedious?

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
My review: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/1108215/

I wish I could say I liked Rayman 3, but the more I think about the game, the more I realize I dislike it! And that sucks! I don't like disliking a game, especially when other people really seem to like it! Maybe the PC port is different from the other ports?

33

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Awoken
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Awoken
My review: (It's best to read these in order!) https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/933870/

Honestly, there's parts of this expansion that I hated much more than A Realm Reborn, it's just that the game's story picked up slightly more than it did in A Realm Reborn. Looking back, I'd probably say they're nearly equal for me in terms of enjoyment, which is to say, not much at all. ARR probably beats it by a smidge.

34

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Collector's Edition
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Collector's Edition
My review: (Start here for the XIV reviews!) https://www.backloggd.com/u/SpikeTheStupido/review/634702/

If I were to reflect on this Final Fantasy XIV experiment as a whole, I'd probably say I'm proud that I somehow made it past this. Slogging through hours of this game hurt like hell, but at the very least, I learned that I could tolerate a genre of gaming that I never thought I could before. Still hate this expansion's guts though. Can you believe the original version of XIV was even worse? I can't! What a nightmare! Majora's Mask has nothing on XIV!
