played in 2020

i didn't play enough games released this year to make a satisfactory list + i like the idea to rank everything i played this year better anyway. i change my ratings around a lot and sometimes forget to update the lists so these might be a little different now

10/10 was really captivated by the town of greenvale and the characters. this game is basically now always in my thoughts
10/10 i think this is my favorite narrative in a game that i've played, i'm going to be obsessed with this story for the rest of my life. i'm scared by the fact that there are people on this earth who can come up with this
9/10 it's so impressive how technical and complex this game, especially for a game played on a 3 button controller. im going to spend the rest of my life learning how to be good at it but for now im stuck on stage 24
9/10 kind of like a 2d shenmue but there's a focus on helping your guy get by well in life. lots of grade school memories came back while playing this one, in a positive, reflective way. it made me remember that i've grown a lot
9/10 absolutely precious, i would like to play thru this game every rainy sunday morning in bed for the rest of my life
9/10 one of my favorite combat systems in any rpg, i wish more games were like it but i literally don't know of a single other one
9/10 REALLY unique game. i am so in love with the mashup of gameplay styles, the way the two compliment and play off each other is so great that it instantly became a favorite game
9/10 it's pretty special for a AAA open world game in the 2010s to be this committed to near-absolute freedom
8/10 i was ready to roll into this game a hater, but im glad to be proven wrong. it takes original re2's resource management and route planning and honestly goes even further with it. both versions of re2 deserve to be played
8/10 really wonderful run and gun that feels like the devs threw every idea they had into it and it somehow all works. the setpieces are really cool and impressive for a 16 bit game
8/10 the best gunvolt game imo. copen is one of the best playable protags in a mega man inspired game i've played so i really appreciate a whole game centered around him. the widescreen, cleaner ui and removal of grinding mechanics is a big step up too. like all gunvolt games the scoring system is fantastic
8/10 dense queer visual novel that grapples with difficult choices like fate of humanity and which hot person will i kiss
8/10 i never knew in all my life how wild the cast of the f-zero games are. i knew about captain falcon, and maybe a few lookalikes, but the cast of this game is absolutely top tier. unreal character designs the likes of which i've never seen before. and the track designs? UNREAL
8/10 one of my new favorite metroidvania games, adding bullethell patterns to the bosses makes them extremely rewarding to beat. maybe consider skipping the cutscenes tho
8/10 a game so fun and fluid that you don't mind playing thru 5 times to beat it, at least i didn't. mostly because each playthrough i learned more of how to optimize the weird leveling system and wanted to see how far i could keep pushing it
8/10 bayonetta 1 with none of the filler bullshit and a great art style instead of an ass one
8/10 enchanting game. in my sleep i still hear the booming sound of my drimogemon pacing behind me
8/10 like the first game, gunvolt's oblique way of dealing damage is a neat twist on the mega man gameplay but ultimately one my brain can't wrap itself around. crashing into enemies to lock on and unleash hell as copen tho? LEGENDARY
8/10 one of my new favorite walking sims. story and dialogue had me hooked
7/10 i am venus
7/10 i had piss in my pants while playing this game
7/10 more games that use the controller in ways congruent with the character, please!
7/10 janky fun
7/10 incredible combat system. the game could have been better if there was less of everything else, but despite influencing a sea of similar games it still has one of the best combat systems i've played
7/10 this game is about love. the characters are weird and i love them all. the monsters are weird and i love them too

7/10 smart game. my brain isn't made for this but i do have a lot of fun playing in free play mode and trying to complete it in as few deaths
7/10 more happy endings in queer stories, please!
7/10 pretty one-of-a-kind. i don't know anything else that applies horror like this and the story is excellent
7/10 i am the frog dude
7/10 it's nice to play a metroidvania with a focus on platforming over combat, very visually cluttered tho
7/10 made me sob
7/10 i really like looking at scary ps1 objects so i loved this one
7/10 improves drastically over the 1st game in some ways but drops the ball on others. the world is gorgeous and most of it is great to play but the dungeons are way too obnoxious
7/10 charming little nes game made in 2019, played it a few times and never got bored
6/10 this expansion wasn't awful, but it was a huge step down after the last one. the story is incredibly generic and shallow, taking a lot of cues from the base game while ignoring the improvements brought on by heavensward. even still, ffxiv as a game is great, so i didn't dislike playing this, and in many ways the dungeons and trials offered here are the best yet

6/10 love the art style, game didn't do much for me otherwise but it was neat
6/10 i love the ghost designs but dispatching them is a bit too arcadey for me, it clashes hard with the rest of the game
6/10 rat game, make friends with a rat
6/10 it's cute and has some funny dialogue
6/10 pretty good 2d platformer with really creative and dynamic level design
6/10 this game is really not my thing but i played it co-op and did have a lot of fun that day

6/10 cute little platformer, reminds me of flash games i used to play after school
5/10 i beat this game in 30 minutes and felt nothing. then i watched a video explaining the plot and felt a semblance of something, but i would've liked to have felt while playing the game
5/10 starts off intriguing but i don't like where the story goes. gameplay doesn't really hold up, i was mostly bored and found it shallow
5/10 borderlands-tier writing on a fairly competent platformer, nothing special
5/10 the scares in this game are pretty laughable, in a fun way. the story is entertaining. definitely the least interesting of the three main clock tower games tho
5/10 didn't really make me feel anything sadly
5/10 the most basic platformer i've ever played, doesn't even try to do anything special but i guess it doesn't really do anything wrong either
4/10 i dont get it, sorry!
4/10 did not like the combat at all

51

4/10 cool aesthetic and concept but completely fumbles the potential. does not play to its own strengths at all
4/10 doesn't really last long enough or give us enough time with the characters for the emotional moments to make me feel anything
3/10 i hate timed button presses in turn based rpgs!!!
3/10 the level design took such a huge hit from the last game and the cast this time is way less fun to play as imo
2/10 does not expand the universe of the original game, does not tell us how the characters ended up where they did in the first game, does not flesh out the antagonistic force, does not feature the breath of options the original did in terms of pursuing suspicious leads and it's transphobic/racist. it runs at 4fps
