ah shit i didn't see that i had made the same list well after, im really sorry 😭 i just woke up, saw the news, and got to work from there

oh no worries, I'm surprised I didn't see more users posting the list lol

it's interesting comparing this list to a lot of things people have told me about differences in taste in the west and japan. some things hold true, like Mother 3 being nowhere to be found, but FF4 being the lowest of the SNES trilogy here is surprising compared to how I've always been told that FF4 is by far one of the most popular games in the series in Japan. changing tastes or just western fans being wrong?

really interesting reading either way. smash bros having such good innings on this list except for Melee is very funny to me

i’m speechless that there’s two entries for persona 5 and that pokemon sword is in the top 20

i posted a famitsu list for comparison and it does a good job juxtaposing the difference between japan's dedicating gaming fandom and the overall gaming market in the above list. i bet with ff4 there's very much a "core fans love it but most people aren't interested" sentiment like with morrowind or the first two fallout games in the west.

@LSW comment to your heart's content, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this

I apologise in advance for any strange words or grammar.

Some preliminaries should be mentioned before the opinion.
The most worthless media in Japan today is television. Of these, TV Asahi is the worst commercial station. (In USA, it's CNN or FOX? I don't know anything about USA TV stations, but I'm saying the right things.)
The name of the program is "Video Game General Election".
There is nothing in the world more unreliable than an election.
You are revolutionary fighters, anarchists, resistance fighters, and gamers are supposed to be your side job.
WE SHOULD SET FIRE TO THE BALLOT BOXES RIGHT NOW.

Based on this premise, I will list some miscellaneous observations. (It was uploaded on youtube and I watched it in 2x speed.)
This ranking has little to do with how good or bad a game is. 50,000 people is not a consensus. The more people who have played, the higher the rank. Quite simply, it's all famous and fashion.
NINTENDO, SQUARE&ENIX's RPG, and others.
Video games as a tool for communication.
The fact that there are so many party games in it is proof of that. Apart from Nintendo, Momotaro Dentetsu is a classic party game. There are 15 games that are designed to be played with many people. 25 if include Pokémon that are involved with other players, such as in battles and exchanges.
Nintendo is and always has been great.
In the past Enix and Square were great.
Personally, the most surprising ones were Suikoden 1/2 and Tactics Orga.
There are few foreign games. After all, Japan is still closed off from the rest of the world!
And not a single SEGA game is on the list!? I knew TV Asahi was a shit TV station! They are falsifying the voting results! I still think we should set F
So you're saying that SEGA fans should be content with reading 'Uncle from Another World'? (We'll have an animation next year! Yay, Uncle SEGA! It's a big deal to see Alien Soldier footage in an animation.)

To be continued in the next comment.

The first Zelda, at the time of its launch, there was a telephone contact to give tips on strategy information. The reason for this was that there was no internet or magazine information.

Tweeted ten days before the broadcast.

Masahito Sakurai - "Rockman DASH (Mega Man Legends) was released today in 1997! It was a playable 3D shooter thanks to the Lock-On system, which kept the player focused on the opponent with the press of a button. This was before the release of the so-called Z attention. However, there are other games that implemented lock-on itself much earlier."

That's Sakurai-san! There is no one else who can SMASH that Shigeru Miyamoto except Sakurai-san! I've respected him since Kirby. lol

Correction
"but I'm saying the right things."
The ‘right' here was ‘unreliable'. The nuances of '適当' in Japanese have a wide range of meanings and are difficult to translate.

yea with this many people voting the results are bound to become a popularity contest. there's definitely a heap of recency bias as well, what with four separate switch games in the top 10. I still find it funny that out of the western choices, stuff like apex legends and dead by daylight made it so high... you're absolutely right that multiplayer stuff gets priority on a list such as this. I'm sure if there was a corresponding american list you'd see stuff like league of legends, fortnite, and overwatch near the top.

that's also a good point on the whole z-targeting thing, not that the use of it in ocarina of time wasn't stellar but it definitely had notable antecedents that get ignored. also I agree that I'm very surprised that there was no sega on here; I at least figured one of the yakuza games would've shown up, right? I was under the impression those games were immensely popular in japan

the yakuza games are big but my current understanding is a.) theyre not really system sellers, b.) theyre big in spite of themselves given their content and target demographic, and c.) sales for mainline entries in japan hit their peak in 2012 with Y5 and have been kind of trickling downwards since. the series has, however, been making strong profits elsewhere in asia and seems to be doing really well for itself atm in the west. like, the series will usually still open at #1 for the first week or two of the retail launch but lost judgments week 1 was approx 145,000 units sold, but in the ps3 era of the series all of the games were opening at like 350,000+ sales for week 1. all that said, a while back i think y0 topped some famitsu poll as one of the best action-adventure games ever made, so its still like, a prestigious series.

also, in total agreement with what LSW's saying lol

Obviously the results mean very little, but it warms my heart that Suikoden I and II can somehow still place on these lists.

Very surprised that, in what ultimately is a popularity contest, the two Dragon Quests not on the list are 1 and 9. Wasn't 9 in particular like record breaking in how much it sold and how popular it was? How'd it get blocked out so easily?

@Woodaba "I've always been told that FF4 is by far one of the most popular games in the series in Japan. changing tastes or just western fans being wrong?"

I assume this assumption came from how many remakes FFIV has gotten. From what I've always seen on the Japanese internet, though, V and VI are much more popular. Those two games also sold much more on SFC than IV did.

On the one hand, it sucks to see that Japan is just as embarrassing about Breath of the Wild as we are, on the other hand Tactics Ogre is on here, so

puyo in top 40 goes hard

@kingbancho that makes a lot of sense, I remember seeing that week 1 sales for y6 were higher than y0 (obviously not the same in the west) and then they have trailed off somewhat. I have to imagine that if there were another 50 slots in the list, some of those games would've slid in

I feel like learning Japanese to play these in the way Japanese gamers did
